Patent number: 9952182Abstract: A computer with a proper program generates a phased array sequence of signals. In a pulser with delays, the signals are fed through a multiplexor into multiple water wedges that are attached to a lift-type check valve being tested. For a sequential operation of the lift-type check valves from the open to the closed position, ultrasonic signals are transmitted through the fluid contained in the valve and reflected back through piezo-electric crystals to the multiplexor. By summation and merger of the signals, an image can be developed of the operation of the lift-type check valve to determine if the lift-type check valve is operating properly. By comparing the signals received with a known standard for that lift-type check valve, proper operation, or lack thereof, of the lift-type check valve under test can be determined.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 2015Date of Patent: April 24, 2018Assignee: IHI Southwest TechnologiesInventors: Jesse R. Patent number: 9269463Abstract: A method and apparatus for inspecting the upper portion of a core shroud of a nuclear power plant is provided. The upper shroud scanner mounts on an arcuic section of a steam dam of the core shroud and moves back and forth there along. A vertical arm with transducers thereon extend down from a Y-car portion of the upper shroud scanner. Transducers adjacent the core shroud emit and receive an ultrasonic sound to inspect for flaws and defects in the core shroud.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2012Date of Patent: February 23, 2016Assignee: IHI Southwest Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Ramon O. Patent number: 9244024Abstract: A digital radiographic tool with drive car for moving along track sections attached longitudinally to a pipe is shown. The drive car carries (1) a collimator on one side of the pipe for projecting x-rays or gamma rays on said pipe and (2) a linear digital array on an opposing side of the pipe for collecting x-rays or gamma rays that have passed through the pipe. The collected rays are processed to indicate any defects in the pipe. The digital radiographic tool is adjustable to allow inspection of pipes that have obstructions adjacent thereto.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2014Date of Patent: January 26, 2016Assignee: IHI Southwest Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Robert Brice Patterson, Duncan J. Patent number: 9064608Abstract: A device is provided to inspect welds in nozzles located in water within a containment vessel of a nuclear power plant. A computer connected to the device controls movement by use of thrusters located along a main rail while buoyancy packs regulate the depth. After the device is navigated to a weld needing inspection, feet extend radially outward from the main rail to secure the device in the nozzle. Then transducer clusters are moved along the main rail to be radially inside the weld to be inspected. Thereafter, the transducer clusters are extended radially outward and rotated adjacent to the weld while simultaneously emitting test signals and receiving reflected signals to indicate the condition of the weld.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2012Date of Patent: June 23, 2015Assignee: IHI Southwest TechnologiesInventors: Skyler Olsen, Benjamin J. Patent number: 9058905Abstract: An apparatus and method for maintaining contact between a pod of transducers and an inner surface of a reactor pressure vessel filled with water of a nuclear power plant is described. An underwater carriage carries the pod of transducers each of which is independently movable and are constantly urged against the surface of the vessel during inspection. Each transducer is independently pivotable about two axes. Each transducer emits and receives signals to detect any flaws of potential problems in the reactor pressure vessel.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 2012Date of Patent: June 16, 2015Assignee: IHI Southwest TechnologiesInventors: Skyler Kevin Olsen, Benjamin J. Patent number: 7821258Abstract: A method is shown for magnetostrictive testing of structures using magnetostrictive techniques. A torsional guided wave is generated in the structure either directly, or through a magnetostrictive strip dry coupled or bonded to the structure. A permanent magnetic field is created by either permanent magnets or DC current for a permanent bias in a bias direction in the magnetostrictive strip and/or structure. By pulsing the magnetic field with an AC current pulse, a torsional guided wave will flow through the structure in the same direction as the permanent bias. By saturating the permanent magnetic field, a maximum torsional guided wave is reflected from defects in the structure to given an improved signal to noise ratio.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2008Date of Patent: October 26, 2010Assignee: IHI Southwest Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Sergey A. Patent number: 7573261Abstract: A method is shown for magnetostrictive testing of structures using a magnetostrictive strip and magnetostrictive techniques. A torsional guided wave is generated in the magnetostrictive strip which is dry coupled or bonded to the structure. A magnetic field creates an induced bias along the longitudinal axis of the magnetostrictive strip, which magnetic field is sufficiently strong so that when an AC pulse applies an AC bias perpendicular to the induced bias, the AC bias does not override or saturate the induced bias. This allows for an increased signal to noise ratio in a reflected signal indicating a defect in the structure. The induce bias and the AC bias are created by respective windings around the magnetostrictive strip, which windings are perpendicular to each other.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2008Date of Patent: August 11, 2009Assignee: IHI Southwest Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Sergey A.
