Patent number: 7246921Abstract: An LED light source using back-reflecting collection optics with a supporting structure and heat sink to block only a small amount of light. A reflector has a front and back side with an LED positioned on the front side of the reflector. A heat conducting body is positioned at least partially between the reflector and the LED. The heat conducting body provides a pathway for heat to flow from the LED toward the back side of the reflector.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 2005Date of Patent: July 24, 2007Assignee: Illumitech, Inc.Inventors: Benjamin A. Jacobson, Robert D. Gengelbach

Patent number: 7108386Abstract: A high brightness LED phosphor coupling device. A semiconductor light source is encapsulated by a medium of first index of refraction, a layer of phosphor surrounded by a second medium of second index of refraction of optical index less than the first index and a light coupler for redirecting most of the light from the light source to an area of the phosphor about equal to the area of the light source multiplied by the square of the ratio of the first to the second index of refraction.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 2004Date of Patent: September 19, 2006Assignee: Illumitech Inc.Inventors: Benjamin A. Jacobson, Robert D. Gengelbach

Patent number: 7068446Abstract: A nonimaging optical system for processing a first and second light distribution. The nonimaging optical system includes at least two refractive surfaces, at least one reflective surface nearer to the first light distribution along at least one ray path than the nearer of the two refracting surfaces and the reflective surface and the refractive surfaces cooperating to redirect light edge rays of the first light distribution into the neighborhood of the edge of the second light distribution with a single reflection from the reflecting surface.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 2004Date of Patent: June 27, 2006Assignee: Illumitech Inc.Inventors: Benjamin D. Jacobson, Robert D. Gengelbach

Patent number: 6558017Abstract: A modular lighting system for illuminating products supported upon various vertically arranged shelves of a display unit includes a housing attached to a first shelf, with the housing including at least one transparent panel which permits an internal illumination source to light products supported upon at least one of the first shelf, a shelf arranged directly above the first shelf and a shelf disposed directly below the first shelf. Most preferably, the light illuminating from the housing is directed so as to effectively, entirely illuminate product support surfaces associated with both the first shelf and the shelf directly below such that the display of products supported anywhere from the front to the back of these shelves is enhanced. This front-to-back lighting function can be achieved in various ways, such as by employing direct, reflective and refractive lighting techniques.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 2001Date of Patent: May 6, 2003Assignee: Illumitech, Inc.Inventors: Riad M. Patent number: 5126923Abstract: Intense illumination is cast omnidirectionally by a single light source that directs a ligth beam onto a pair of mirrors rotating hundreds of revolutions per second. The mirrors are mounted in an "X" configuration and are thus vibration-free. The light beam is split in half and directed in opposite directions by the mirrors to enable the mirrors to rotate at half the speed of single mirror devices. The light source may be offset from the axis of rotation of the mirrors to shroud preselected areas from illumination.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 1990Date of Patent: June 30, 1992Assignee: Illumitech, Inc.Inventor: William J.
