    Abstract: A method and apparatus for classifying a plurality of elements in images, where electronic images of a field of view containing elements are formed. Each of the elements has a plurality of features. A first subgroup of the plurality of features from the images of the plurality of elements are extracted and processed to segregate the plurality of elements into first and second groups. A classification class only for each of the elements in the first group is determined by selecting and processing a second subgroup of the extracted features to determine a physical characteristic of the element, and by selecting and processing a third subgroup of the extracted features in response to the determined physical characteristic to determine a classification class of the element. The second group of elements bypasses the determination of classification class.

    Abstract: A color video display apparatus comprises a pixel array with each pixel containing one or more LEDs for generating each of the selected colors and a diffractive optical element positioned in front of the array to form the transmitted light into a substantially elliptical pattern. Improved uniformity for the apparatus is achieved by measuring the intensity of each separate color generating LED in each pixel, recording each intensity and varying the current to each separate color LED or LEDs so that every LED or LEDs responsible for each color to provide a suitable color output. A feature of the apparatus is that a number of separate modules, each having a pixel array, can be combined to construct a video image board. These boards have applications in such areas as billboards along roadways and as signs in stadiums.

The mixing device includes a cylindrical shaped member having an outer surface, a channel formed in the outer surface with the channel including circumferential and longitudinal turns, and a hollow mixing tube disposed in the channel. As the stain and the specimen fluid flow through the mixing tube, they travel through the circumferential and longitudinal turns and are mixed together. A fluid sensor employing a sensor RC circuit and a reference RC circuit detects capacitance changes in the delivery tube for detecting the presence or absence of fluid therein.

    Abstract: A displacement pump comprising a pump assembly and a cassette assembly. The pump assembly includes upper and lower housing portions that define a cavity, an arm disposed in the cavity, a roller attached to the distal end of the arm, and a motor attached to the proximal end of the arm for rotating the arm. The cassette assembly is removably disposed in the cavity and comprises upper and lower cassette housing portions that form an annular compression surface with a channel therein. A hollow compression tube having a flange extending along a length thereof is secured to the compression surface by the flange being engaged with the channel. As the motor rotates the roller arm, the roller presses the compression tube against the compression surface to create a moving occlusion of the compression tube for pushing fluid through the compression tube.

    Abstract: A multi-beam acoustic transducer array system for producing color enhanced, three dimensional, high resolution images of a ship's underwater hull, wherein the acoustic transducers can be mounted in orthogonal pairs, each pair being positioned opposite from another pair within a shipping channel. The array can be utilized either in a stationary configuration within a controlled shipping lane or suspended in the water column from a mobile support vessel, with at least one array being orthogonally mounted and suspended in the water column from the mobile support vessel, wherein the mobile configuration obviates the need for multiple orthogonal arrays, for purposes of performing acquisition and imaging of a ship's hull. Each orthogonal array consists of a first transducer transmitting sonar pulses along a horizontal plane and a second transducer transmitting sonar pulses along a vertical plane, such that the two beaming sonar pulses are orthogonal, thereby providing optimal coverage.

    Abstract: A catheter system has a balloon angioplasty device disposed about a common lumen near its distal end. The balloon catheter is pre-fitted with a stent which is deployed when the balloon is inflated. The common lumen is in communication with multiple lumens within a proximal region of the catheter body to allow for positioning of the catheter over a movable guide wire and convenient delivery of imaging or interventional devices to a desired region of a body passageway being treated. The procedure for stent deployment optionally includes steps of imaging a lumen by ultrasound before and after stent deployment to identify the site at which a stent is needed, to confirm that the stent is being and has been deployed at a longitudinal position which does not overlap a branched segment of the body passageway, and to ensure that the stent has been radially opened to an optimum diameter.

The multi-net structure utilizes subgroups of particle features to partition the decision space by an attribute or physical characteristic of the particle and/or by individual and group particle classification that includes an unknown category. Preprocessing and post processing enables heuristic information to be included as part of the decision making process. Preprocessing classifies particles as artifacts based on certain physical characteristics. Post processing enables the use of contextual information either available from other sources or gleaned from the actual decision making process to further process the probability factors and enhance the decisions.

    Abstract: Virtual displays with micro-display engines are arranged in compact, lightweight configurations that generate clear virtual images for an observer. The displays are particularly suitable for portable devices, such as head-mounted displays adapted to non-immersive or immersive applications. The non-immersive applications feature reflective optics moved out of the direct line of sight of the observer and provide for differentially modifying the amount or form of ambient light admitted from the forward environment with respect to image light magnified within the display. Micro-display engines suitable for both non-immersive and immersive display applications and having LCD image sources displace polarization components of the LCD image sources along the optical paths of the engines for simplifying engine design. A compound imaging system for micro-display engines features the use of reflectors in sequence to expand upon the imaging possibilities of the new micro-display engines.

    Abstract: The present invention converts a wide-angle lens image into a two dimensional view with reduced distortion and warping. The present invention uses a graphics engine which accepts a shape, an image, and a viewing position. An effective lens shape, corresponding to the recording lens, an image as well as a image-related viewing position is supplied to the graphics engine. The graphic engine projects the image on the effective shape and displays a portion of the image from the viewing position. The recording lens is often a wide-angle lens. The graphics rendering engine maps the wide-angle lens image onto an effective lens shape and displays sections of the mapped image on the shape in a full screen view. Portions of or the entire image are viewable at any one time. Use of acceleration hardware permits frame per second rates of display of up to 60 and greater frames per second. Typical wide-angle recording lenses include “fisheye” lenses and torus shaped (doughnut) lenses.

    Abstract: A flow cell for examining specimen fluid flowing within sheath fluid. A housing defines a hollow fluid passage that includes a geometric focusing portion in which the fluid passage narrows in height and an examination area. A cannula injects specimen fluid into the fluid passage as a stream of the specimen fluid with an initial velocity. The sheath fluid flows through the fluid passage, having a first velocity as it passes the point the specimen fluid is injected. The initial velocity is less than the first velocity, which focuses down the height of the specimen fluid stream via linear flow rate focusing. The narrowing geometric focusing portion of the fluid passage also focuses down the height of the specimen fluid stream via geometric focusing. A microscope and camera capture images of the focused down specimen fluid stream passing through the examination area.
