    Abstract: Disclosed herein, in one embodiment, are spunlaid fibers comprising at least one polymeric resin and at least one filler having an average particle size of less than or equal to about 5 microns and/or having a top cut of less than about 15 microns, wherein the at least one filler is present in an amount of less than about 40% by weight, relative to the total weight of the spunlaid fibers. Also disclosed herein is a method for producing spunlaid fibers comprising adding calcium carbonate to at least one polymeric resin and extruding the resulting mixture. Further disclosed herein are nonwoven fabrics comprising such spunlaid fibers and methods for producing them.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein are granulated kaolin compositions exhibiting at least one of improved material handling properties, low dusting during transit, easy make-down into mineral-water slurries, and requiring less energy to produce than spray dried kaolin products. The granulated kaolin compositions may, in one embodiment, be characterized by a moisture content ranging from about 12% to about 23% by weight relative to the total weight of the composition. In another embodiment, the granulated kaolin compositions may have an average granule size of greater than about 10 mesh. Also disclosed herein are granulated kaolin compositions having a moisture content ranging from about 12% to about 23% by weight relative to the total weight of the composition, wherein the composition is friable when subjected to a shear force.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to coarse calcined kaolin slurries having a high solids content. The invention also relates to methods of making such slurries. The resulting slurries can have a solids content of at least about 58% by weight wherein at least about 40% by weight of the calcined kaolin particles has a particle size of at least about 1 ?m. The slurries can be stabilized where the solids show little settling from suspension. The slurries have many uses, including fillers or extenders in paint and coating compositions for paper or paper board. More generally, the inventive products may be used wherever calcined kaolins are used. The present invention also related to coarse calcined kaolin slurries having a multimodal particle size distribution and a high solids content.

(063) The hydrous kaolins of the present invention allow coated papers to be produced at high brightness while maintaining acidic conditions on a paper machine. The invention pigmets exhibit brightness levels unexpectedly higher, e.g., about 2 to about 2.

    Abstract: Bleaching a particulate calcium carbonate aqueous slurry with a reductive bleaching agent such as formamidine sulfinic acid increases the viscosity of the slurry. Addition of the reductive bleaching agent and/or the metal material takes place prior to, during or after the manufacture of the slurry or the bleaching step. The amount of the kaolin having an esd of less than about 0.25 ?m can range from about 25% to about 60% by weight. The Hercules viscosity of the kaolin product is less than 4000 rpm at 18 dynes at 63% solids and less than 1500 rpm at 18 dynes at 69% solids when measured using the “A” bob. The present invention also relates to an improved method for making the kaolin product from sedimentary kaolin.
