  • Publication number: 20160102515
Abstract: A hydraulic jar coupled between opposing first and second portions of a downhole tool string. The hydraulic jar includes a housing comprising a shoulder protruding radially inward from an internal surface of the housing, a shaft disposed within the housing, a piston fixedly positioned about the shaft and fluidly sealed against the shoulder, and a pressure relief device. The housing and the shaft move axially relative to each other and the shoulder axially interposes first and second portions of an annulus formed between the shaft and the housing. The pressure relief device controls fluid flow from the first annulus portion to the second annulus portion based on a pressure of the fluid in the first annulus portion relative to a set pressure of the pressure relief device.

  • Publication number: 20150047854
Abstract: A bulkhead connector assembly for assembly within a downhole tool to isolate a dry side of the downhole tool from a fluid side of the downhole tool and to allow electrical communication therebetween. The bulkhead connector assembly comprises a bulkhead comprising holes extending therethrough, wherein the bulkhead is adapted to form a fluid seal against an inside surface of the downhole tool. Terminals extend through the bulkhead, wherein an end of each terminal is in electrical communication with one of a plurality of electrical wires. Boots each extend about the end of a corresponding one of the terminals. A retaining block has holes each receiving one of the boots. A housing positioned around the retaining block is coupled to the bulkhead, thus positionally fixing the retaining block relative to the bulkhead.

  • Publication number: 20150027729
Abstract: Apparatus comprising a gripper operable to grip a cable extending between the Earth's surface and a downhole tool, wherein the downhole tool is suspended in a wellbore that extends from the Earth's surface to one or more subterranean formations. A body is assembled to the gripper. A plurality of rolling elements are each rotatably coupled to the body and operable to rotate relative to the body in response to contact with a sidewall of the wellbore as the body is translated along the wellbore. The body and the plurality of rolling elements collectively rotate relative to the gripper and, thus, the cable.

  • Publication number: 20140196911
Abstract: An impact apparatus conveyable in a tool string within a wellbore comprises a mandrel, a first impact feature, and a latch pin retainer encircling an end of the mandrel. A release sleeve encircles a portion of the latch pin retainer and includes a radial recess. Latch pins retained by the latch pin retainer are slidable into and out of the radial recess, and prevent disengagement of the mandrel end from the latch pin retainer when not extending into the radial recess. A release member electromagnetically causes relative translation of the latch pin retainer and the release sleeve, including aligning the latch pins with the radial recess and thereby permitting the disengagement. A second impact feature is positioned to impact the first impact feature in response to the disengagement when the impact apparatus is under tension.

  • Publication number: 20140131100
Abstract: An impact apparatus conveyable in a tool string via conveyance means within a wellbore. The impact apparatus comprises a first portion, including a first interface coupled with a first tool string component, a first engagement feature, and a first impact feature. The impact apparatus also comprises a second portion, including a second interface coupled with a second tool string apparatus, a second engagement feature in selectable engagement with the first engagement feature, and a second impact feature positioned to impact the first impact feature in response to disengagement of the first and second engagement features and a tensile force applied across the tool string by the conveyance means. A release member positionable between first and second positions in response to a signal carried by the conveyance means prevents disengagement of the first and second engaging features when in the first position but not the second position.

  • Patent number: 8418758
Abstract: A jarring tool is disclosed. The tool has a segment of sub housing containing an upper stop proximate a first end thereof. An outer latch piece is connected to an upper end of the lower shaft inside the sub housing, and an upper shaft passes through the stop and connects on a first end thereof to an inner latch piece. A cap is on a second end of the upper shaft retaining a washer stack against the upper stop. A retainer is inside the sub housing and has an first piece providing a restraining region and an open region and a second piece attached to the sub housing. The retainer retains the inner and outer latch pieces in a latched position in the restraining region until the latch pieces are displaced toward the second end of the sub housing through the retainer to the open region as a result of a tensile force on the outer latch piece.

  • Patent number: 8225860
Abstract: A jarring tool having an extensible joint connecting first and second sub ends. A first inner latch piece connects to the upper sub end, and a second outer latch piece connects to the lower sub end. The joint, in a latched position, has the outer latch piece latched to the inner latch piece and the inner and outer latch pieces restrained from unlatching by a stationary restraining collar. Under tensile force the joint unlatches into an unlatched position by the outer latch piece pulling the inner latch piece through the restraining collar into a position where the inner and outer latch pieces are free to separate. An impact force is generated from the tensile force when the joint unlatches and reaches a maximum extension.
