Abstract: A system, method and computer-readable medium are disclosed for advertising and completing a transaction using a credit card or a debit card. The method includes receiving situation information at a device, based on the situation information, transmitting an advertisement to the device, associating an advertisement with an identification card such as a debit card, credit card, student ID card, biometric data, or club card, and receiving an indication of a purchase associated with the advertisement and completed using the card. The disclosure enables a user to receive an advertisement on a device such as a mobile device and then make a purchase decision based on that advertisement in a normal fashion or transparent to the user and sales clerk, without the use of coupons, special codes or any other additional and annoying requirements for making the purchase. The user only needs to use an appropriate identification card.

Abstract: An information browser system and method enables sending of information requests to remote information sources and receiving of requested information from the remote sources on a wireless communication device. Information in any of a plurality of formats, including WML, HTML and WMLScript, is converted into a format in which the information can be displayed or otherwise further processed by the device. Information browsing functions may also be integrated with other communication functions on a mobile communication device.
Abstract: An improved handheld electronic device having a reduced keyboard provides facilitated language entry by making available to a user certain words that a user may reasonably be expected to enter. In some situations, certain words can be stored, for example, in a temporary dictionary for use in particular situations. For instance, the names of the recipients of an electronic message might be stored in a temporary dictionary for rapid retrieval when entering a salutation in the message. As another example, a number of the words in an existing electronic message may be stored in a temporary dictionary and made available to a user when replying to or forwarding the message since the existing message might include words that the user might reasonably be expected to type in the reply message or the forwarded message.
Abstract: An electronic device and a method implemented within the electronic device for configuring parameters of a notification setting comprising at least two of auditory, visual and tactile notifications for association with specific events on the electronic device; generating a window display having a first area thereof with multiple selectable fields depicting the aforenoted parameters, and a second area having an icon; and previewing the notification setting via at least two of said audio output, visual output and tactile output responsive to selection of the icon.

Abstract: A wireless communication device stores a traffic indicator received from an adjacent base station. The device measures a received signal strength indicator, RSSI, from the adjacent base station. An adjusted signal strength indicator, RSSI-ADJ, for the adjacent base station is calculated as a function of the adjacent base station's RSSI and the stored traffic indicator. A traffic indicator is received from a current base station. A received signal strength indicator, RSSI, is measured for the current base station. An adjusted signal strength indicator, RSSI-ADJ, for the current base station is calculated from the current base station's RSSI and the received traffic indicator. The communication device roams from the current base station to the adjacent base station based on a comparison of the adjacent base station's RSSI-ADJ to the current base station's RSSI-ADJ.
Abstract: A handheld electronic device useful for wireless communication has a keyboard including a plurality of externally accessible keys and each key has at most, one letter associated therewith. The keys can be disabled (i.e. the keyboard can be locked) to prevent accidental actuation thereof by using the navigation tool which has a depressible rolling member. Thus, for example, depression of the rolling member twice in succession or pressing and holding the rolling member down temporarily enables the keyboard lock. The lock can be disabled simply by depressing the rolling member and at least one other key.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for maintaining a maximum sustained flash current over the whole length of a flash using a programmable current drive in a handheld portable device powered by a battery. The method involves measuring the battery voltage before and after a flash is initiated and calculating the equivalent series resistance (ESR) of the battery. The calculated ESR is then used to adjust the flash current. The process may be repeated to correct for errors in the flash current.
Abstract: A system and method for automatically saving the contents of volatile memory in a data processing device on power failure. A secondary power supply is provided, which upon failure of the primary power supply supplies power long enough for all modified information stored in volatile memory to be written to a non-volatile memory device such as NAND flash in an AutoSave procedure. In the preferred embodiment modified sectors in volatile memory are flagged, and only modified sectors with a directory list are written to non-volatile memory during the AutoSave procedure.

Abstract: Ephemeris data is downloaded intelligently to a GPS-enabled wireless communications device based on user activity rather than at fixed predetermined intervals. Ephemeris data can be downloaded to enable both Aided GPS and Assisted GPS. The device can download ephemeris data based on the frequency of requests into an API communicating with a GPS driver, based on the detection of a new network, or a change in time zone of the network time. Intelligent, adaptive downloading of ephemeris optimizes the usage of bandwidth and the data charge to the user while ensuring that ephemeris data is cached to provide assistance for location-based services such as turn-based navigation.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for telephony tone signal and character code generation for QWERTY keyboards includes a QWERTY style keyboard, a processor and a keyboard mode control software module. The QWERTY style keyboard has a plurality of letter keys, wherein each letter key is configured to generate a unique input signal. The processor is coupled to the keyboard and is configured to convert each unique input signal generated by the letter keys into a character code and/or a telephony tone signal. The keyboard mode control software module operates on the processor, and controls whether the processor converts the unique input signals from the letter keys into character codes or telephony tone signals.
Abstract: A method (200) and an apparatus (300) in a wireless portable communication device (102) for maintaining appropriate authentication credentials required for a common data application in a current service network are provided. A method (400) in a wireless communication network (106) for providing current authentication credentials required for the common data application accessible through the wireless communication network (106) is also provided. The wireless portable communication device (102) has default authentication credentials required for the common data application in a default service network (106), receives (204) a data session configuration file including authentication credentials based upon a predetermined condition, prioritizes (206) between the default authentication credentials and the received authentication credentials, and uses (208) the authentication credentials having higher priority for the common data application in the current service network (110).

Abstract: A system and method for testing a data storage device without revealing memory content. To control the individual bits of the memory during testing each value is written into the memory according to the equation NEW_DATA=CURRENT_DATA XOR DATA_SEED such that individual bits of NEW_DATA are equal to CURRENT_DATA with selected bits inverted when the corresponding positions in DATA_SEED are high. NEW_DATA is written into the memory, read out and verified, so that all bit positions can be controlled and tested in both logic states, while NEW_DATA and CURRENT_DATA are not ascertainable by the testing software.
Abstract: In a device communicating over a network, a proxy to delay timeout of an application on the device where the proxy is on a communications path between the application and the network, the proxy comprising means for registering a data request from the application to the network; a counter for measuring a predetermined time interval, the time interval selected to prevent timeout at the application; means to send preventative data to the application after the counter has expired but before a response is received; means for modifying a response received from the network to remove preventative data already sent to the application, creating a modified response; and means for forwarding the modified response to the application, wherein the proxy registers that a message has been sent and waits a predetermined interval, and if a response has not been received during that interval sends the preventative data to the application to delay a timeout.
Abstract: A method is provided for associating initial transmissions and retransmissions in semi-persistent scheduling. The method includes providing a first initial transmission associated with a first assigned Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ) process ID. The method further includes providing a second initial transmission associated with a second assigned HARQ process ID. The method further includes providing at least one retransmission associated with the first HARQ process ID. The second initial transmission occurs before the at least one retransmission, and the second assigned HARQ process ID is different from the first assigned HARQ process ID.
