  • Publication number: 20090287475
Abstract: A handheld electronic device includes a reduced QWERTY keyboard and is enabled with disambiguation software that is operable to disambiguate compound word text input. The device provides output in the form of a default output and a number of variants. The output is based largely upon the frequency, i.e., the likelihood that a user intended a particular output, but various features of the device provide additional variants that are not based solely on frequency and rather are provided by various logic structures resident on the device.

  • Publication number: 20090286535
Abstract: A mobile communication device maintains a stored list of a plurality of carrier identifications, where each carrier identification is stored in association with one of a plurality of country codes. The mobile device is also associated with a home wireless carrier that is identifiable by a home carrier identification stored in its memory. The mobile device reads the home carrier identification from the memory, and selects one of the plurality of country codes that is stored in association with the home carrier identification. During operation, the mobile device reads a specified domain name in response to a user-initiated request made via a Web browser or search application. Then, the mobile device produces a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) request with a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) corresponding to a specified domain name and a country code parameter which includes the selected country code. The HTTP request with the URL is submitted via the wireless communication network.

  • Publication number: 20090287470
Abstract: A user interface routine includes an intelligent elision routine having a plurality of language objects, plurality of abbreviation objects, and a plurality of preference objects. Each language object that has an associated abbreviation object and preference object is an abbreviatable language object. The user interface routine and/or the intelligent elision routine is structured to determine a text field's length, also identified as a limited space, receive a text string and replace selected language objects in the text string with the associated abbreviation objects to create an abbreviated text string. The process is, preferably, repeated on the abbreviated text string until the abbreviated text string is shorter than the limited space or until no more abbreviatable language objects are in the text string.

  • Patent number: 7620024
Abstract: A system and method of packet zone hysteresis for a mobile station is presented. A packet zone hysteresis reset timer is started whenever the mobile station sends or receives packet data and packet data exchange is determined to be incomplete. The packet zone hysteresis reset timer gives a time duration for which packet data exchange must be completed if packet zone hysteresis information is to be maintained. If the packet zone hysteresis reset timer expires before packet data exchange is completed, then the packet zone hysteresis information is cleared. If the mobile station moves to a different packet zone while packet data exchange is determined to be incomplete or packet data is going to be sent to which a response is expected, then the mobile station will perform a packet data reconnect. According to another aspect, upon detecting that a packet data exchange has completed, the mobile station re-activates packet zone hysteresis if it was de-activated from the packet data exchange.

  • Publication number: 20090279508
Abstract: In one illustrative example, a system acquisition method suitable for use in W-CDMA utilizes a receiver having an automatic frequency control (AFC) circuit. A system acquisition scan is performed over a plurality of candidate frequencies in an RF band. During the system acquisition scan, a pilot signal of a system on one of the candidate frequencies is detected. When information of the system is successfully decoded, and the system is different from a requested system (e.g. not the RPLMN or HPLMN), the pilot signal of the system is assigned as a timing reference in the receiver for one or more remaining candidate frequencies of the system acquisition scan. Therefore, an AFC window time otherwise needed to converge on a remaining candidate frequency is not needed or reduced.

  • Publication number: 20090278490
Abstract: A handheld electronic device in conjunction with a holder for the handheld electronic device that together form an electronic device. The handheld electronic device includes a first battery and the holder includes a second battery and a charging apparatus. When the handheld electronic device and the holder are electrically connected together, such as when the handheld electronic device is received in a cavity formed in the holder the charging apparatus charges the first battery on the handheld electronic device from the second battery on the holder when the first battery charge has been depleted to a given level and the second battery charge is above a second given level. Alternatively, if the first battery charge is above a third given level the first battery charges the second battery if the second battery is not fully charged.
