    Abstract: A protective case for a mobile device having a shell portion to retentively house the mobile device, a cover portion that can cover a mobile device retentively housed in the shell portion, and a flexible panel portion connecting the shell portion to the cover portion. The cover portion can be adjusted from in front of the shell portion to behind the shell portion by flexing the flexible panel. A pivot stand is attached to the inner surface of the cover portion at a hinge. The pivot stand is configured to pivot outwardly along said hinge to support the case in an operating position.

The hinge portion includes a housing, a plurality of pins at least partially extending through the housing, and a plurality of hinge connectors. The hinge connectors include a pin sleeve portion rotatably positioned around and at least partially encircling each of the pins and an attachment portion that is attached to either the upper portion or the lower portion. In operation, the hinge facilitates the upper portion being rotatably locked into position relative to the lower portion in one or more predetermined positions. Sensors on the case may be provided to enable/disable the keyboard when the case is opened or closed in a predetermined position.

In operation, the latch hooks and retains one end section of the front cover to maintain the device in an angled use position when open. The aperture may be defined by a ring component that is dimensioned to receive the latch and firmly support the latch.

The multi-layered construction includes three layers that are co-molded to one another and is capable of being lightweight and low-profile, yet provide a high level of impact protection. The first layer generally forms the external back face surface of the case, the third layer generally forms the perimeter bumper of the case and the second layer forms the internal liner of the case and includes an elevated pattern of walls upon which the back face of the mobile device rest upon. The first layer is comprised of material that has a hardness greater than the other two layers. The third layer is comprised of a material that has a hardness that is greater than the second layer. The layers are configured to interact with one another so that they are capable of distributing and absorbing impact forces to mitigate damage to the mobile device.
