  • Patent number: 10711732
Abstract: A piston includes an upper member having a crown and a combustion surface extending radially inward from the crown. The upper member includes concentrically oriented first and second upper connecting surfaces integrally formed on the bottom side of the upper member. At least one of the upper connecting surfaces includes a curvilinear and/or multi-arcuate cross-sectional profile. The piston also includes a lower member having a pair of opposing skirts, each skirt defining a bore. The lower member also includes concentrically oriented first and second lower connecting surfaces integrally formed on a top side of the lower member. The lower member is integrally connected to the upper member by friction welding. The curvilinear and/or multi-arcuate profile enables a shortened distance between the top surface of the crown and the bore centerline of the bore. Methods of manufacturing the piston are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 10450998
Abstract: A one-piece piston having an investment or other permanent or non-permanent mold/die precision cast piston crown, rod flange and piston skirt. The piston crown has a relative constant thickness, a flange requiring minimal machining and a skirt providing for a wall with a support against the angular shifting of the piston. This improves the distribution of heat within such crown and the angular stability of the piston wall at the piston rod connection.

  • Patent number: 9816459
Abstract: A piston and methods for constructing a piston for use in an internal combustion engine are presented wherein the piston includes a cylindrical body extending from the crown. The cylindrical body defines a ring groove, and a portion of the cylindrical body defines a non-circular cross-section below the ring groove. The ring groove is configured to correspond with an associated sealing ring. The non-circular cross-section creates a gap between the cylindrical body and an associated cylinder wall enabling a quantity of oil to pass from an annular region between the cylindrical body and the associated cylinder wall.

  • Patent number: 9216474
Abstract: A two-piece piston is formed by friction welding an upper member to a lower member, wherein the upper and lower members are precision cast to net final dimensions such that no post-casting machining is required prior to the friction-welding process. The upper member includes a substantially flat crown and combustion surface extending radially inward from the crown. The lower member includes a pair of opposing skirts, each having a bore formed therethrough for receiving a connecting rod pin. The upper member and lower member each include at least two corresponding connecting surfaces that form a welded joint therebetween when the upper and lower members are friction welded together. The finished piston includes an integral cooling oil reservoir adjacent to the combustion surface.

  • Patent number: 7938093
Abstract: This invention relates to an articulated two piece piston designed for reciprocable movement within a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. The piston has a crown of high-strength ferrous material that is precision cast net to finished dimensions on all inner and outer surfaces to provide a controlled thickness throughout to ensure mechanical and thermal consistency without any additional machining of the crown. The crown is attached to a separate skirt by the use of a wrist pin, wherein the skirt is made of ferrous or non-ferrous materials by casting or other means.

  • Patent number: 4550513
Abstract: A router bit for use with earth-moving equipment such as tractor scrapers, bucket loaders and dozers, composed of two parts, one affixed permanently to the apparatus and the other, which comprises the cutting edge, separable from the former for ease of replacement when worn and ineffective, thus obviating the need for expensive and laborious replacement of the whole router bit assembly. The upper and lower parts are joined by interlocking fingers and secured further by flex pins. The lower part, by means of a bar-like extension affixed to and positioned generally diagonally across the length of either side thereof, is prevented from lateral movement.

  • Patent number: 4455053
Abstract: A low-cost track shoe for tracked vehicles is fabricated from sheet metal stock or scrap pieces according to three alternate shoe structure disclosed herein. The shoe structures of this invention include a plurality of linkage members welded between a bottom plate and a top plate in such a manner as to form unitary assemblies which can be interconnected by means of hinge joints to form any desired track length. The various shoe structures of this invention teach different arrangements of the linkage members and different linkage member structures for obtaining track shoes readily interchangeable with conventional track shoes manufactured by sandcasting methods of the prior art.

  • Patent number: 4434642
Abstract: A method for making replacement grouser bars particularly contoured to fit rock worn grouser shoes from blanks cut from inexpensive sheet metal. The blank has a straight lower edge and a curved upper edge such that the bar is thicker at the ends than in the middle. The straight lower edge is easily double beveled and the blank is reverse forged to obtain a finished grouser bar having a straight upper edge and a curved lower edge, the bar still being thicker at the ends than in the middle.
