  • Publication number: 20030116762
Abstract: This invention mainly provides a single-chip structure of silicon-germanium (SiGe) photodetectors and high-speed transistors. Primarily inserting a specified photo-absorbing layer in the photodetector, this device structure then provides the capability to absorb the light spectrum with an infrared wavelength, but also improves the overall optical absorption efficiency indeed. Then consider both the photodetector and the high-speed transistor have similar structures, therefore they can be well integrated on the same substrate by using the single-chip technology. Furthermore, one separated insulation layer will be adopted to isolate the photo-detecting zone and the high-speed transistor zone. Consequently, a single-chip structure of the SiGe photodetector and the high-speed transistor will be implemented.

  • Patent number: 6527003
Abstract: A simple micro valve actuator is disclosed. The micro valve actuator of this invention comprises a sealed vacuum chamber. The micro valve is actuated by providing a current to a thin film heater, which in turn weakens and, under the atmospheric pressure differential, breaks a diaphragm sealing said vacuum chamber whereby the vacuum inside the chamber is released. By applying the micro valve actuator of this invention to a microfluidic channel with a micro valve, the resulting pressure differential deforms the section of the microchannel at the micro valve area and adjacent to the vacuum chamber so to change the flow inside the microchannel. In the preferred embodiments of this invention, the chamber may be prepared in a silicon, glass, or plastic substrate and a diaphragm is vacuum bonded to seal the chamber. The diaphragm may comprise a metallic gas-impermeable film. A releasing member comprising a thin-film metallic heater is then microfabricated on the diaphragm.

  • Publication number: 20010028324
Abstract: A miniaturized microstrip antenna with variable broadband operation comprised of a ground patch, an isosceles-triangular patch with a base side, two isosceles sides, a top angle opposite the base side and two base angles. A pair of primary slots extending from the top angle sides toward the base angles are embedded in the isosceles-triangular patch. At least one pair of secondary slots extended from each primary slot. A substrate is located between the ground patch and the isosceles-triangular patch. The primary slots are approximately parallel to the sides of the isosceles-triangular patch. The second and the third slots branching from the primary slots are approximately perpendicular to the base side of the isosceles-triangular shaped patch. It is found that by selecting a proper dimension, the good broadband operation can be obtained. Lastly, inclusion of the slots and adjustment of the size of the slots on the microstrip antenna allows for a reduction in overall size and area of the microstrip antenna.
