Patent number: 11779944Abstract: The present invention is directed to improvements related to the generation of aerosols and outlines an apparatus and methods which supports deagglomeration and counteracts reagglomeration of aerosol particles. The apparatus is provided with an arrangement of inlet conduits for pressurized gas that promote transportation with a rotational flow towards an exit conduit. In order to further support production of high quality aerosols, the apparatus can be provided with an impactor aligned with the exit conduit with at least one impacting surface that minimizes formation of impact residues.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 2020Date of Patent: October 10, 2023Assignee: INHALATION SCIENCES SWEDEN ABInventor: Per Gerde

Patent number: 11054414Abstract: The invention relates to methodologies of obtaining a controlled exposure of an aerosol to a model material. The invention also provides an exposure cap and a system for studying or predicting the interaction between a model material, e.g. a cell, and an aerosolized agent. The controlled exposure of the aerosol to the model material, makes is possible to accurately calculate the mass-balance of the aerosol exposure.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2019Date of Patent: July 6, 2021Assignee: INHALATION SCIENCES SWEDEN ABInventor: Per Gerde

Patent number: 8555873Abstract: A system and a method for studying or predicting the interaction between a lung and an aerosolized agent. The system comprises an aerosol generator (10) sealingly connected to an exposure arrangement adapted to provide a transport aerosol flow from an aerosol holding chamber of the aerosol generator (10) to a flow junction; and an exposure aerosol flow from the flow junction for distribution to an exposure organ with breathing capacity thereby a providing a residual aerosol flow transported away from the flow junction. The exposure arrangement further comprises a flow rate monitoring device located upstream the flow junction for monitoring the transport aerosol flow, a device for measuring the aerosol particle concentration located downstream the flow rate monitoring device, and optionally a flow control function for controlling the transport aerosol flow. Using the system for predicting the interaction between a lung and an aerosolized agent minimizes the loss of the agent.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 2008Date of Patent: October 15, 2013Assignee: Inhalation Sciences Sweden ABInventor: Per Gerde

Patent number: 8347525Abstract: The invention relates to a spray drying system and a method for its operation that provides a composition of dry. or essentially solvent free, particles from a solution of an agent. The system comprises a generally vertical tube reactor arranged for counter-current removal of solvent from a process flow fed with aerosol droplets of solution descending from the top said reactor with an ascending gas flow. The reactor includes a perforated process tube for transportation of the process flow from the outlet of an aerosol generating device to a dry particle collecting device. A membrane sleeve essentially surrounds the peripheral area of said process tube and separates the descending process stream from the ascending gas stream. Vaporized solvent is transported from the process stream to the ascending gas stream. A reactor housing is sealingly covering said process tube and membrane sleeve and is provided with means for introducing and/or removing the process fluids.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 2008Date of Patent: January 8, 2013Assignee: Inhalation Sciences Sweden ABInventor: Per Gerde

Patent number: 8348673Abstract: An arrangement and a method for studying the dissolution of particles in the air/blood barrier of the respiratory tract. A device for simulating the interaction of particles (203) delivered to the air/blood barrier of the respiratory tract comprises: a perfusion chamber (101) adapted to receive and deliver a flow of perfusion fluid; a semi permeable membrane (205) coated on one side with a barrier layer (204) adapted to interact with the particles; and a first sheet formed organ (202) having a surface distributed with the particles. The membrane (205) is arranged to be a fluid contact with the perfusion fluid, while the first sheet formed organ (202) is arranged to contact the barrier layer (204) of the membrane (205), in order to simulate the dissolution of the particles (203) in the air/blood barrier when perfusion fluid flows through the perfusion chamber (101), along the membrane (205).Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 2008Date of Patent: January 8, 2013Assignee: Inhalation Sciences Sweden ABInventor: Per Gerde
