The present invention also includes a method of implanting into a human body a prosthesis as described herein, and subsequently reconfiguring the prosthesis as may be desired or necessary. A still further aspect of the invention is a kit of component parts used in providing a configured implantable prosthesis.

    Abstract: A non-invasive method of detecting anomalous tissue, such as cancerous or injured tissue, in a patient. At least two hemoglobin signal components of hemoglobin levels in at least one segment of tissue of the patient are non-invasively measured over time. Time varying changes of at least a first of the hemoglobin signal components are measured with respect to at least time varying changes of a second of the hemoglobin signal components. A co-varying coordinate system of the time varying changes is generated. Any anomalous tissue in the measured segment of tissue is detected from a signature of the measured segment of tissue in the co-varying coordinate system which differs from a signature of non-anomalous tissue in the co-varying coordinate system. Preferably, five hemoglobin signal components are measured: oxyHb, deoxyHb, total Hb (totalHb=oxyHb+deoxy Hb), Hb oxygen saturation (HbO2Sat=(oxyHb/totalHb)*100), and tissue-hemoglobin oxygen exchange HbO2Exc (deoxyHb?oxyHb).

A tool for removing an acetabular cup from an acetabulum is also described. A surgical method is also provided wherein the acetabular ball and femoral cup are separated first followed by, in any order, separating the femoral cup from the femoral implant and separating the acetabular ball from the acetabular cup.

    Abstract: Surgical tools which are used to separate from one another a femoral cup and an acetabular ball in an implanted hip replacement prosthesis. At its distal end, elements of the surgical tool engage the femoral cup and the acetabular cup. When proximal handles of the tool are squeezed toward one another, the engagement elements move away from one another. Thus, a surgeon is able to separate the femoral cup and the accetabular ball from one another without pulling the acetabular cup away from the acetabulum or the femoral cup and/or femoral implant away from the femur, thereby accomplishing the separation without disrupting any bone ingrowth.

The surgical tool enables a surgeon to remove the ball without pulling on the acetabular cup and without disrupting any bone ingrowth because the tool maintains pressure on the cup while exerting an opposing pressure pulling on the ball.

In a further preferred embodiment the invention also comprises a heat treatment device which is issued to provide a suitable heat treatment to a component (or part thereof) of a modular orthopedic prosthesis.
