Abstract: A versatile irrigation system dissector for laparoscopic surgery comprises an elongated lumen having an elongated slim tip electrode slidably mounted therein and having a cutting tip extendable therefrom at one end. The lumen is connected at the other end to a manifold mounted on a handle, which includes a pair of switches to regulate the inlet and outlet flow through the lumen for irrigation and suction purposes. A control panel on the handle regulates the current to the tip for either cutting or coagulating. Thus, several operations may be performed with a single handheld instrument in a highly efficient and rapid action.
Abstract: A method and system is provided that controls pet access to various different locations and/or objects. In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides an automated system whereby pets wearing an ID tag are allowed access to various locations and/or objects, such as food contained within a feeder dish for example, while a sensor system, responding to the presence of other animals or people, causes the device to close preventing unauthorized access thereto. The feeder further includes one or more sensors using ultrasonic, infrared technology or both in combination for the identification of both tagged and non-tagged animals or children. Further embodiments employ the system to control access to litter boxes, pet toys, pet watering systems, pet gate access, pet containment systems or pet doors.

Abstract: The invention relates to screening methods for determination of the risk of preterm delivery and/or pregnancy associated conditions. The methods involve detection of the level of one or more biomarkers in a biological sample from the patient. In particular, in embodiments of the invention there are provided methods for determining the risk of pre-eclampsia and other hypertensive disorders, and intrauterine growth retardation (IGUR).
Abstract: A gripper grasps irregular and deformable work pieces so as to lift and hold packaged, processed, or raw, and manipulate the work pieces for the purpose of material handling, assembly, packaging, and other robotic and automated manipulative functions. A vacuum is induced at multiple points through a flexible gripping hood to provide lifting force to, and facilitate rapid movement of, work pieces. An array of lighting devices and a double ring array of segmented mirrors provide uniform illumination to ensure accurate positioning of the gripping hood with respect to the work piece to be manipulated.
Abstract: The present invention relates to novel composites that incorporate carbon nanospheres into a polymeric material. The polymeric material can be any polymer or polymerizable material compatible with graphitic materials. The carbon nanospheres are hollow, graphitic nanoparticles. The carbon nanospheres can be manufactured from a carbon precursor using templating catalytic nanoparticles. The unique size, shape, and electrical properties of the carbon nanospheres impart beneficial properties to the composites incorporating these nanomaterials.

Abstract: A system and a method are disclosed for providing a downhole mechanical energy absorber that protects downhole tools from impact loads and shock loads that occur during run-in contacts, tool drops, perforating blasts, and other impact events. A continuous localized inelastic deformation of a tube is a primary energy absorber in a load limiting design of the downhole mechanical energy absorber.
Abstract: Lightning protection system of wind turbine blades formed by various connections arranged on carbon fibre laminates (2) of the blade (1), equipotentialising the surface of the airfoils (4) of the beam (10) via derivations from a main cable (6) using the respective auxiliary cables (5). The auxiliary cables are connected to metal plates (3) which make the direct connection with the carbon fibre laminates (2) and are positioned during the blade (1) laminating and curing process, or they are connected to metal pins, preferably cone shaped, which pass through the hybrid laminate. Around the connections a nanocomposite based conductive resin (11) is arranged. In the case of a hybrid laminate with layers of carbon fibre and layers of fibre glass, the equipotential state of the different layers is achieved using windows, discontinuities or open spaces in the fibreglass layers.
