Abstract: In order to enhance data link security, the present invention provides a method of calculating a start value for security for a user equipment, or UE, in a wireless communications system. The method includes selecting ciphering sequence numbers, denoted by COUNT-Cs, and integrity sequence numbers, denoted by COUNT-Is, of radio bearers and signaling radio bearers using the most recently configured ciphering key and integrity key, determining a maximum COUNT value of the selected COUNT-Cs and COUNT-Is and calculating the START value when twenty most significant bits of the maximum COUNT value reach a first value resulting from subtracting a predefined value from a maximum value. Preferably, the maximum value is 1048575, whereas the predefined value is 2 or any other positive integer.

Abstract: In order to prevent traffic volume measurement errors, especially variance measurement errors, the present invention provides a method of measuring variance of a data payload in a wireless communications system. The method includes the following steps. Plural variance reference values are predetermined. A variance measurement result related to data payload is reported. If the variance measurement result is greater than the plural variance reference values, the variance measurement result is rounded downwards to the maximum variance reference value of the plural variance reference values. Preferably, the plural variance reference values have a maximum value of 16 K and a minimum value of 0, where K is 1024. The plural variance reference values other than the minimum value form a geometric sequence.

  • Patent number: 7298730
Abstract: When the system receives a request to switch for using a smaller TBS size, instead of discarding the unacknowledged MAC-hs PDUs, this invention will pick up RLC UM PDUs or RLC AM PDUs or both of them from the unacknowledged MAC-hs PDUs affected by the size change request and reload them into the new PDU. Meantime, this invention will select RLC UM PDUs over RLC AM PDUs to load into the new PDU if the unacknowledged MAC-hs PDU contains both of them. Therefore, this invention reduces the risk of loss of synchronization for UM RLC because the discarding of unacknowledged MAC-hs PDUs according to the prior art.

  • Patent number: 7269760
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for specifying actions that a receiver takes upon receiving an AM or UM PDU with an error indication. Currently, for RLC acknowledged mode (AM) and unacknowledged mode (UM), upon receiving an AM or UM PDU with an error indication, actions that the receiver takes are not specified. Inappropriate actions that the receiver takes can cause serious problems. For example, unnecessary reset procedures are initiated, unnecessary retransmissions are made, data is lost, or synchronization between the sender and receiver can be lost. In an embodiment of the present invention, for RLC AM, upon receiving an AM PDU with an error indication, the receiver discards this PDU. In another embodiment of the present invention, for RLC UM, upon receiving an UM PDU with an error indication, the receiver discards this PDU. In another embodiment, MAC discards a MAC SDU that is to be delivered to an AM or a UM RLC entity, if an error indication for this SDU has been received from the lower layer.

  • Patent number: 7266105
Abstract: 33When an RRC procedure is combined with an SRNS Relocation procedure, a PDCP synchronization procedure is performed only if a next expected UL/DL Receive PDCP sequence number invalidity event is detected during the SRNS Relocation procedure. If no such invalidity event is detected, then no PDCP sequence number synchronization procedure is performed. If the RRC procedure is not executed in combination with the SRNS Relocation procedure, then the PDCP sequence number synchronization procedure is performed only if: (1) The RRC procedure causes the RLC entity that is used by the PDCP entity to be re-established; or, (2) The RRC procedure causes the header compression protocol used by the PDCP entity to be changed.

  • Patent number: 7254143
Abstract: This invention provides solutions to resolve the potential security unsynchronizing problem when upper layers issue a suspend command to the RLC entity while a TFC selection exchange process has been initialised. Three solutions of this invention, can be used either in UM or in AM environment, in which the RLC entity defines a safe range factor and add it to the upper-layers-passed parameter N of the prior art to calculate a new suspend sequence number for the suspended RLC entity. During the suspension, the RLC entity will continuously pass the scheduled RLC PDUs to lower layers as long as the SN of scheduled RLC PDU is less than the new suspend sequence number. One solution of this invention is more suitable to be implemented in UM than in AM. In this solution, upper layers decide and pass to the RLC entity a suitable parameter N having a more tolerant safety range than the prior art does.

  • Patent number: 7254144
Abstract: A UTRAN sends a Radio Bearer Setup message to a UE, which indicates that SRNS relocation is to be performed and that a new RB is to be established in a first domain. The UE receives the Radio Bearer Setup message and assigns a first START value to a START_VALUE_TO_TRANSMIT variable according to the HFNs of all established RBs in the first domain. The UE the generates a START list containing entries corresponding all domains, including the first domain. The UE fills the entries with corresponding START values, synchronizing the entry corresponding to the first domain to hold a value that is identical to the value of the START_VALUE_TO_TRANMIT variable. The UE then composes a reply message that includes the START list, and sends the reply message to the UTRAN. The UE utilizes the START_VALUE_TO_TRANSMIT variable to set an HFN of the new RB. In a second embodiment, the response message includes both the START list and the START_VALUE_TO_TRANMIT variable. The START list is applied to all RBs but the new RB.

  • Patent number: 7233671
Abstract: A wireless device first successfully completes an Inter-RAT procedure, which is either an Inter-RAT handover, Inter-RAT cell reselection or Inter-RAT cell change order from UTRAN procedure. The wireless device then determines if a USIM is present. If the USIM is present, the wireless device determines if a new security key set was received and unused for ciphering and integrity functions during a current RRC connection. If a new key set was present and unused, the wireless device stores a value of zero into the USIM as a security START value for the CN domain associated with the RRC connection.

  • Patent number: 7227857
Abstract: A user equipment (UE) transmits a first START value to a serving radio network controller (RNC), and utilizes the first START value as a most-recently transmitted START value. A serving radio network subsystem (SRNS) relocation procedure is then initiated between the UE, the serving RNC and a target RNC. In response to the SRNS relocation procedure, the serving RNC transmits a SRNS relocation information container to the target RNC. The SRNS relocation information container includes the START value of each CN domain and the Latest configured core network (CN) domain. The target RNC utilizes the START value of the Latest configured CN domain to initialize the hyper-frame numbers (HFNs) of radio bearer RB2. The UE re-establishes RB2 and utilizes the first START value to initialize the HFNs of RB2. The UE then transmits a response message to the target RNC on RB2.
