Patents Assigned to Innovia Films Limited
  • Patent number: 7452592
Abstract: There is described a substantially planar self-supporting sheet (preferably an thermoplastic film e.g. formed from a polyolefin such as BOPP) comprising on at least one side thereof a substantially continuous adherent coating, thereon to create a barrier to oxygen, the coating comprising nano-particles, the sheet characterized in that: (a) the nano-particles form a substantially continuous phase on the sheet; and/or (b) the nano-particles are present in an amount of at least about 20% by dry weight of the coating; and/or (c) the coating is substantially free of polymeric binder, synthetic hydrophilic resin and/or a resin with a hydrophilic/hydrophobic character. The coated sheets have a high oxygen barrier, with preferred OTR values (at 23° C. and 0% RH)<10 cm3/m2/day. Preferred nano-particles are biopolymers such as starch and the coating is preferably substantially free of wax which has been found to reduce oxygen barrier effectiveness.

  • Publication number: 20080230428
Abstract: The invention concerns a coated biaxially oriented polypropylene film which comprises a core layer consisting of a homo-polymer of polypropylene with skin layers formed from a block copolymer of polyethylene and polypropylene, the skin layers having been treated with a primer with a heat sealable coating on each skin layer, and each coated side being readily printable with solvent and water based inks and resistant to thermal and humidity blocking, the thickness of the skin layers being selected so as to fall in the range 2.8 to 4.5 microns having a wide angle haze factor of at least 3 and not exceeding 50, coupled with a gloss (45 degrees) factor of at least 20% and not exceeding 100%.

  • Patent number: 7331159
Abstract: There is described a method for wrapping an article using a web of packaging film having at least one tar line thereon in the MD, the method comprising the steps of: (a) forming at regular intervals in the MD a tab on the film, the tab having a free end connected by free sides to an opposite end of the tab attached to the film, the tab being positioned on the film so the axis of at least one tear line in the MD passes through both ends of the tab; (b) severing the film web to form sheets by cutting substantially along an axis across the TD of the web, the axis passing across the tab between its ends, where the tab along said axis is not substantially severed there through so the tab protrudes from the leading edge of the sheet; (c) wrapping a sheet formed from step (b) around an article to form a tube with the cut sides of the sheet overlapping, where the free end of the tab lies on the top of the overlap on the outside of the tube and where the cut sides of the sheet overlap at least to the extent that the t

  • Patent number: 7291387
Abstract: A self supporting film of polyolefinic polymer(s) is described, the film having a first and a second surface where a first exposed surface of the film (A) comprises a polymeric low temperature sealable coating (LTSC) and where the second exposed surface of the film (B) comprises an olefinic polymer capable of forming a seal to the LTSC at a minimum temperature of at most about 100° C. when measured at 15 psi for 2 seconds, such that the first and second surfaces of the film have a mutual heat seal strength (A to B) of at least about 200 g/25 mm, when measured at 15 psi for 2 seconds at 120° C.; where the LTSC also comprises: (a) an anti-block additive in from an effective amount to about 15% by dry weight of the coating (b) a non-ionic anti-mist additive having an HLB value of up to about 20; and (c) optionally an anti-slip additive of a mean particle size of from about 3 to about 5 microns in an effective amount up to about 0.5% by dry weight of the coating.

  • Patent number: 7118792
Abstract: There is described a flexible oriented film (301) which acts a replacement for tear film, the film (301) having at least one tear susceptible line (307, 309) or pattern thereon (preferably weaker than the surrounding film), the film tearing substantially therealong when tearing is initiated therealong, characterised in that the line (307, 309) or pattern has substantially the same thickness normal to the film surface (gauge) as the rest of the film; and/or the film material therealong is substantially differently (preferably more) oriented (in extent and/or direction) to that in the rest of the film. The means for forming the line (307, 309) or pattern is preferably a laser (e.g. infra-red CO2 laser) set at a sufficiently low power not to ablate material therealong but at a sufficiently high power to reorient the film therealong. A method of preparing such films (301) and packaging (721) (such as cigarette packs) overwrapped with such films (601) are also described.
