Patent number: 4866237Abstract: A discharge coating apparatus comprises an assembly for applying a vibrational motion in the longitudinal direction of an electrode while applying a voltage pulse in synchronization with the vibration to cause electrical discharge between the surface of a workpiece and the electrode and the formation of a coating layer on the workpiece of the material of the electrode due to the heat produced by the electrical discharge. An additional motion is applied to the electrode to cause the electrode to undergo reciprocal travel towards and away from the suirface of the workpiece at an angle relative thereto. The additional motion can be a rotational motion. The electrode can be formed with a concave portion at its tip or with an axial bore so that only an annulus of the electrode contacts the workpiece. The additional motion can be a skipping movement by utilizing a skipping mechanism consisting of an elastic memebr.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 1983Date of Patent: September 12, 1989Assignee: Inoue-Japax Research Inc.Inventor: Kiyoshi Inoue

Patent number: 4686343Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for automatically resetting a wire electrode in an operating setup on an electroerosion (e.g. EDM) machine is disclosed. Upon termination of a given machining operation commenced with a starting hole in the workpiece, the wire electrode spanning in a continuous stretch between a supply side and a collection side is broken in a region adjacent to the workpiece and at one of the opposite sides thereof by forming the wire electrode in the region with at least two coplanar grooves substantially symmetrical about the axis thereof and then applying tension to the wire electrode to break the latter in the region. The broken wire electrode is threaded its broken end into and through a new starting hole preformed in a workpiece for machining a contour therein in a subsequent machining operation to reestablish the continuous stretch of the wire electrode between the supply and collection sides.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 1986Date of Patent: August 11, 1987Assignee: Inoue-Japax Research IncInventor: Kiyoshi Inoue

Patent number: 4578555Abstract: A safety system for a machine tool, e.g. an EDM machine, having a multiplicity of different items of setting procedure to be attended to manually and inspected by the operator before the machine is actuated for performing a given machining operation, employs a loudspeaker associated with the machine. A control unit is used to produce a preselected sequence of multiple, time-spaced electrical signals corresponding to multiple verbal instructions prescribed for alerting the different setting items, respectively, and to apply these signals in that sequence to an electromechanical transducer in the loudspeaker. The transducer responsive to each of the electrical signals produces through the loudspeaker a corresponding unit of the multiple verbal instructions audible to the operator for a corresponding item of the setting procedure.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 1982Date of Patent: March 25, 1986Assignee: Inoue-Japax Research Inc.Inventor: Kiyoshi Inoue

Patent number: 4549062Abstract: An electrical machining apparatus incorporating features against malfunctioning or delay to reach a normal operation upon recovery from a power failure or shut-off in the input source is provided. The apparatus having a plurality of electrical output devices, e.g. a machining power supply, a fluid pumping system and a feed drive unit is provided with a plural gate unit connected between the input source and each of the plural output devices. The plural gate circuit units are disabled in response to the power failure or shut-off for jointly holding all the output devices electrically deenergized, respectively. A sequential trigger circuit operates in response to a recovery from the power failure or shut-off for sequentially producing a plurality of trigger signals and enabling the plural gate circuit units therewith respectively whereby to commence energizing the respective output devices in a predetermined sequence.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1982Date of Patent: October 22, 1985Assignee: Inoue-Japax Research Inc.Inventor: Kiyoshi Inoue

Patent number: 4527729Abstract: A novel and highly efficient die forming method is disclosed wherein a plurality of blank workpieces, preferably plate blanks, are prepared and assembled together in a format such that a die blank may be produced therefrom which has a contour at least roughly approaching the contour of a desired die product. The blank workpieces are assembled together by permanently joining them, preferably by fusion-welding. The die blank so produced is then preferably subjected to heat-treatment and is thereupon machined, preferably by EDM, to progressively develop the desired contour therein from the rough-shaped contour.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 1982Date of Patent: July 9, 1985Assignee: Inoue-Japax Research Inc.Inventor: Kiyoshi Inoue

Patent number: 4355223Abstract: A numerical control system and method for controlling a travelling-wire EDM system in which the pulses from the numerical controller are transmitted to pulse motors driving the workpiece table along X and Y axes for generating the shape to be machined in the workpiece. A taper is applied to the cut by mounting one of the electrode wire guides on a support capable of x and y movements through respective pulse distributors and sign-changing inverters from the numerical controller with respective pulse motors so that the cut on one side of the workpiece represents the sum of increments from both the X-Y and x-y placements while the cut on the opposite side represents substantially only the increments of the X-Y displacements.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1980Date of Patent: October 19, 1982Assignee: Inoue-Japax Research Inc.Inventors: Kiyoshi Inoue, Iwao Shibuya

Patent number: 4307279Abstract: A traveling-wire electro-erosion machine which has a head assembly comprising a tubular support formed with a plurality of roller guides positioned to define a path for a traveling wire forming an electrode for electroerosion. Above the tubular support, there is provided a boxlike housing with a supply wheel and a takeup wheel for the wire and a bevel gear on the tubular support cooperates with a pinion on a motor which enables rotation of the entire assembly. A worm-gear arrangement may be used instead of the bevel gears and a different construction of the guide rollers may be provided as well, e.g. on the downwardly extending projection from the tubular body.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1978Date of Patent: December 22, 1981Assignee: Inoue-Japax Research Inc.Inventors: Kiyoshi Inoue, Akihiko Shimizu

Patent number: 4247303Abstract: A method of producing electrochemical-abrasive machining tools in which the abrasive body, e.g. a wheel, is impregnated with a chemical plating solution from which a metal is deposited in the interstices of the tool between the abrasive grains. Instead of the usual practice of forcing the chemical plating solution through the tool continuously so that only part of the metal is depleted from the solution, the invention provides for forcing the solution into the interstices and retaining it there for a predetermined time sufficient, preferably, to chemically plate all of the metal from the solution onto the walls of the interstitial spaces of the tool.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 1975Date of Patent: January 27, 1981Assignee: Inoue-Japax Research Inc.Inventor: Kiyoshi Inoue
