    Abstract: A germanium-containing layer is deposited on a single crystalline bulk silicon substrate in an ambient including a level of oxygen partial pressure sufficient to incorporate 1%-50% of oxygen in atomic concentration. The thickness of the germanium-containing layer is preferably limited to maintain some degree of epitaxial alignment with the underlying silicon substrate. Optionally, a graded germanium-containing layer can be grown on, or replace, the germanium-containing layer. An at least partially crystalline silicon layer is subsequently deposited on the germanium-containing layer. A handle substrate is bonded to the at least partially crystalline silicon layer. The assembly of the bulk silicon substrate, the germanium-containing layer, the at least partially crystalline silicon layer, and the handle substrate is cleaved within the germanium-containing layer to provide a composite substrate including the handle substrate and the at least partially crystalline silicon layer.

    Abstract: A system and method of improving fault-based multi-page pre-fetches are provided. When a request to read data randomly from a file is received, a determination is made as to whether previous data has been read from memory (i.e., RAM) or from a storage device. If the data has been read from memory, an attempt is made to read the present requested data from memory. If the data is in memory it is provided to the requester. If the data is not in memory, a page fault occurs. If the requested data has a range that spans more than one page, the entire range is read in by a page fault handler. If previous data has not been read from memory, it will be assumed that the present requested data is not in memory. Hence, the present requested data will be loaded into memory. Loading random data that spans a range of more than one page all at once into memory inhibits the system from pre-fetching on the range due to fault-based sequential data accesses.

    Abstract: A computer cache memory having at least two levels includes associativity sets allocated to congruence groups, each congruence group having multiple associativity sets (preferably two) in the higher level cache and multiple associativity sets (preferably three) in the lower level cache. The address range of an associativity set in the higher level cache is distributed among all the associativity sets in the lower level cache within the same congruence group, so that these lower level associativity sets are effectively shared by all associativity sets in the same congruence group in the higher level. The lower level cache is preferably a victim cache of the higher level cache. This sharing of lower level associativity sets by different associativity sets in the higher level effectively increases the associativity of the lower level to hold cast-outs of a hot associativity set in the upper level.

    Abstract: A method and system for managing a secure network boot of a secondary server (server blade). The server blade sends a request, via an Ethernet switch, for a boot program to multiple Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) servers. One of the DHCP servers responds with an address of at least one Pre-boot Execution Environment (PXE) server that can upload a boot program to the server blade. Only if the responding DHCP server is on a list of known trusted DHCP servers will the Ethernet switch allow the server blade to receive the response from the responding DHCP server, thus allowing the download of a boot program from a PXE server.

    Abstract: A print actuator for dot matrix applications having a stator with a coil wrapped thereon and constrained by the walls of the stator. An armature extends above the stator in a cantilever or pivoted manner. The armature controls movement of a print element. The magnetic flux path extends transversely through the width of the armature and the periphery of the stator at walls supporting the armature. Multiple armatures are included in a common armature plate. Twin multi-coil stators are mounted for operation of the armatures on the plate. The stators have magnetic stator sections adjacent the armatures, and have non-magnetic heat-dissipating stator sections remote from the armatures. In its cocked position, the armature is flexed to a profile which optimizes armature dynamics, such as a profile similar to the first bending mode.
