Patent number: 6570389Abstract: A power supply to be tested is placed in a vacuum chamber; the power supply is turned on and gas pressure in the chamber is reduced. As the gas pressure is reduced below 1 atmosphere, the breakdown voltage decreases; when the breakdown voltage decreases to the value of the applied voltage, arcing occurs as long as the applied voltage is greater than a minima. When a site arcs, the site is noted; the power supply is removed from the vacuum chamber; the arc site is conformally coated and the coated cured. Thereafter, the power supply is returned to the vacuum chamber and the test process repeated until the power supply no longer arcs. Thus the partial pressure test can identify the sites that have a possibility of arcing in the field and the design of the power supply modified by use of one or more conformal coatings or by otherwise changing the configuration of the power supply.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 2001Date of Patent: May 27, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Prabjit Singh, George T. Patent number: 6571276Abstract: A system and method for managing access to assets in a distributed data storage system includes requesting, from a client computer, a semi-preemptible access lock from a server computer. The semi-preemptible lock, if granted, is held by the client computer as long as the server does not demand it back, with the client computer granting open instances under non-preemptible file locks for the asset to which the locks pertain as long as the client computer holds the semi-preemptible lock. When another client computer requests the semi-preemptible lock, the server can demand the lock from the holding client, which relinquishes the lock if no open instances are protected by the lock. Otherwise, the holding client computer first attempts to downgrade its lock to meet the request, and if compatibility is not achieved thereby, the holding client refuses to relinquish the lock.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 2000Date of Patent: May 27, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Randal Chilton Burns, Atul Goel, Robert Michael Rees

Patent number: 6570401Abstract: The protection circuit of the present invention addresses the problem of indeterminate logic levels caused by loss of one of the power supplies in a two-power-supply CMOS integrated circuit. The circuit of the present invention replaces the typical scheme of power supply sequencing to fix the problem. The circuit disclosed herein detects the state of the core voltage and disables the output drivers when the core voltage is detected as being off. The disabled drivers are put into a high impedance state, thereby eliminating the potential for damage and eliminating the need for power supply sequencing. The invention also protects against the sudden loss of the integrated circuit core voltage, VDD, power supply during normal operation.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 2001Date of Patent: May 27, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Anthony Correale, Jr., Terry Cain Coughlin, Jr., Douglas Willard Stout

Patent number: 6571304Abstract: A magnetic tape cartridge includes a non-volatile semiconductor memory storing either a portion of the same data as that to be written to the tape or at least control data sufficient to recover from a delaying tape drive operation or from a mechanical failure in the tape drive thereby permitting signaling to a central processing unit an assurance that the data transferring by the CPU will be correctly written onto the tape. The host data can be directly transferred to the cartridge memory if the cartridge memory is fast enough and large enough to handle the transfer. An intermediate high speed non-volatile memory in the drive is necessary if the cartridge memory is too slow to handle the direct transfer or too small to handle the data transferred by the CPU. The cartridge memory then will contain command data sufficient to control the transfer of the data from the non-volatile drive memory to the tape.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 1999Date of Patent: May 27, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Robert Beverley Basham, Glen Alan Jaquette
