Publication number: 20120290359Abstract: A computer implemented method, system, and/or computer program product predicts a success of a currently proposed project. Responsive answers to a survey questionnaire for a currently proposed project are received and used to create a predicted success score for the currently proposed project, based on a pattern of responsive answers to a predetermined combination of questions from the survey questionnaire. The predicted success score for the currently proposed project is compared with and matched to actual success scores from prior projects. If the percentage of prior projects that retained their success scores through completion exceeds a predetermined accuracy threshold, then the currently proposed project is approved for implementation.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 23, 2012Publication date: November 15, 2012Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: JIMMIE C. Publication number: 20120290283Abstract: An embodiment of the invention includes applying a first partition to a plurality of LPs, wherein a particular LP is assigned to a first set of LPs. A second partition is applied to the LPs, wherein the particular LP is assigned to an LP set different from the first set. For both the first and second partitions, lookahead values and transit times are determined for each of the LPs and related links. For the first partition, a first system progression rate is computed using a specified function with the lookahead values and transit times determined for the first partition. For the second partition, a second system progression rate is computed using the specified function with the lookahead values and transit times determined for the second partition. The first and second system progression rates are compared to determine which is the lowest.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 13, 2011Publication date: November 15, 2012Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Cheng-Hong Li, Alfred J. Publication number: 20120291044Abstract: Mechanisms for distributing workload items to a plurality of dispatchers are provided. Each dispatcher is associated with a different computing system of a plurality of computing systems and workload items comprise workload items of a plurality of different workload types. A capacity value for each combination of workload type and computing system is obtained. For each combination of workload type and computing system, a queue length of a dispatcher associated with the corresponding computing system is obtained. For each combination of workload type and computing system, a dispatcher's relative share of incoming workloads is computed based on the queue length for the dispatcher associated with the computing system. Publication number: 20120287936Abstract: Packet processing logic of a host system's virtualization manager detects packets on the ingress or the egress path to/from a virtual port having three bitmap arrays for processing packets within a virtual local area network (VLAN). The logic checks the VLAN identifier (VID) of the packet to determine, based on an offset position within the corresponding bitmap array, whether the port supports the VLAN. Both the ingress array offset position and egress array offset positions correspond to the value of the VID, and are set within the specific bitmap array during configuration of the VLAN on the port. When the VLAN is supported by the port, the logic enables the packet to be processed by the port. Otherwise, the logic discards the packet. A strip bitmap array indicates when a packet's VID should be removed prior to forwarding the packet on the egress of a port (or destination port).Type: ApplicationFiled: May 13, 2011Publication date: November 15, 2012Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Amitabha Biswas, John Buswell, Dayavanti G. Patent number: 8312441Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide techniques for presenting energy consumption information in an IDE tool. In one embodiment, the IDE tool may be configured to determine energy requirements associated with specific elements of the source code, and to present graphical indications of energy requirements along with those code elements. Such energy requirements may be determined by matching code elements to a stored data structure describing energy requirements for executing various code elements. The stored data may be based on predefined standards, and/or may be based on historical measurements of energy consumption during prior instances of executing code elements on a target computer system. Additionally, developers may specify priority for compiling portions of source code, according to desired energy requirements.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 2009Date of Patent: November 13, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Eric L. Patent number: 8311190Abstract: Methods and apparatus, including computer program products, implementing and using techniques for verifying incoming telephone calls to a telephone services subscriber. An incoming telephone call from a caller is received. A time variable including one or more of a current date, a day-of-week, and a time-of-day is determined. One or more challenge questions is selected from a pre-defined schedule, in response to determining the time variable. The schedule includes challenge questions for different time variables. The caller is subjected to the one or more challenge questions. At least one challenge response to one or more of the selected challenge questions is received. It is determined whether the at least one challenge response was an expected correct response. Patent number: 8312105Abstract: Provided is a method for displaying information such as lists of data, files and icons in a window of a graphical user interface (GUI). Unlike a typical display methodology, which arranges items in a “machine-dependent” sorting order, the disclosed technology provides a “natural” sorting order. The list, or names associated with the files or icons are incorporated into a query and the query is transmitted to a web service. The web service parses the query to determine a natural order appropriate to the material represented by the list, files, or icons rearranges the list, files or icons into the natural order and returns a response to the originator of the query. The operating system or GUI that originated the query receives the response, parses the response and displays the list, files or icons in the corresponding natural order.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 2009Date of Patent: November 13, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Michael N. Patent number: 8311993Abstract: Some embodiments of the inventive subject matter are directed to performing sub-transactions of a long-lived transaction (LLT) in a sequence (e.g., according to an LLT flow) and writing a log entry at the performance of each of the sub-transactions that specifies results of the sub-transaction. Some embodiments do not require generating any compensating transactions during performance of the sub-transactions. Some embodiments are further directed to detecting that an interruption occurs to the LLT and repeating, or initiating re-performance of the LLT from the beginning of the sequence following the flow of the LLT from its beginning. During the re-performance of the LLT, some embodiments are further directed to checking the log entry at each sub-transaction to determine whether the sub-transaction was performed successfully before the interruption.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 2010Date of Patent: November 13, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Manoj N.
