  • Patent number: 6722560
Abstract: A bulk box of corrugated cardboard has a readily repulpable water vapor barrier material incorporated in the outer liner, increasing the resistance of the box to penetration by moisture in humid conditions, and especially reducing hysteresis effects in conditions of cyclic humidity. The box has increased strength and bulge resistance, and achieves performance equally as good as or better than a conventional box without the water vapor barrier, while at the same time enabling less pulp fiber to be used in the construction of the box.

  • Patent number: 6712936
Abstract: A mathematical model is used to design paper and paperboard having improved runnability. The mathematical model provides an estimate of fracture toughness for an optimized paper product based on specific measurement parameters, e.g., filler percent, softwood content and caliper for optimal fracture toughness. After the optimizing set of measurement parameters has been acquired, these parameters can be used to manufacture grades of paper having improved runnability performance, e.g., in printing presses.

  • Patent number: 6706143
Abstract: The invention relates to methods for reducing the amount of halogenated organics produced during a halogen bleaching process for lignocellulosic pulp fibers. According to the disclosed invention, it has been discovered that the use of a chelating agent prior to a non-halogen containing bleaching stage of a pulp bleaching process is effective to increase the brightness of the resulting bleached pulp without the need to increase the amount of halogen compounds required to obtain the same pulp brightness and without adversely affecting the pulp viscosity and yield.

  • Patent number: 6688514
Abstract: A corrugated paperboard bulk box has opposed pairs of parallel side walls, and in a preferred embodiment, has interposed diagonal corner panels to form an octagonal box. The bottom of the box is closed by first and second opposed pairs of flaps, wherein a T-shaped locking tab is formed on the free edge of one of the flaps of the first pair, and a notch is formed in the free edge of each of the flaps of the second pair. In erecting the box, the flaps of the first pair are first folded inwardly over the bottom of the box, with the free edges thereof confronting one another and the flaps lying in substantially flush, coplanar relationship. The flaps of the second pair are then folded inwardly over the first pair, with the free edges of the flaps of the second pair lying in confronting relationship with one another and the notches therein defining a central opening.

  • Patent number: 6688084
Abstract: A machine and method for applying reinforcing strapping to bulk boxes. The machine includes a plurality of strapping head assemblies arranged in series, with each adapted to apply a strap in encircling relationship to a box at a predetermined location on the box. As the box advances through successive strapping head assemblies, straps are applied in predetermined spaced relationship on the box, until the desired number of straps have been applied. The number, spacing and tension of the straps may be quickly and easily adjusted. In an embodiment of the invention, the strapping head assemblies are arranged in pairs in individual modules. A recovery strapping head assembly is provided just prior to exit from the machine to apply any strapping missed by a preceding strapping head assembly.

  • Patent number: 6685022
Abstract: The clam shell container is formed by a cover formed of cardboard, chipboard or other similar material. A thermoform plastic tray is adhered to the inner surface of the cover to form the completed clam shell container. When closed, the edges of the tray move closer to the edges of the cover. The thermoform is bonded to the tray with adhesive and the container is closed to allow the adhesive to cure in the closed configuration. When opened, stress is created by the tray being fixed to the cover. To alleviate the stress, perforations between the tray sections and the spine break forming three distinct sections. In the open configuration, a small gap is created between the tray section and the spine.

  • Patent number: 6684167
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for predicting a score-line cracking propensity of a multi-ply substrate. The method includes the steps of: bending the multi-ply substrate; acquiring tensile load data from the multi-ply substrate during bending; and computing a material property of a top ply of the multi-ply substrate based on the acquired tensile load data. The material property must show a strong correlation to the score-line cracking propensity of the multi-ply substrate. The material property which is computed is the energy consumed in plastic deformation of the top ply during the fracture process. The measurement results can be used to predict score-line cracking propensity in multi-ply board systems, such as multi-ply paperboard.

  • Patent number: 6656401
Abstract: The specification discloses a method for extrusion coating multiple substrate webs on a dual or tandem extruder system having multiple extruder stations. The method includes as an initial step providing a first substrate web and a second substrate web wherein each of the first and second substrate webs has a coating side and an underside. The webs are temporarily joined to form a composite web wherein the respective coating sides face outward and the respective undersides face one another. A first polymer coating is extruded on the coating side of the first web at a first extrusion station. Subsequently, a second polymer coating is extruded on the coating side of the second web at a second extrusion station. The extrusion coated first and second webs are then separated. The invention enables more efficient and economical use of dual or tandem extruder systems.
