Abstract: A curved log to be sawn lengthwise by a vertical saw blade is supported for a time, near its center of gravity, by a device which permits the log to rotate about its axis, and thus find an orientation at which the plane of the curve of the log axis is vertical, so as to maximize yield from the log. The device also includes drive sprockets which operate, at certain angular positions of the device, to move the log lengthwise.

Abstract: A paperboard article carrier suitable for modular construction. The complete carrier is adapted to carry four cans or bottles (a four pack) and is formed by assembling two identical two pack article carriers. The two pack article carriers are each formed of a single blank of paperboard which is folded and glued. Each two pack carrier includes a lower basket like portion and an upper, centrally positioned, handle fashioned from two layers of paperboard. One portion of each handle contains a pair of projecting friction latch tabs. The lower or basket portion of each two pack carrier is provided with a latching tongue and a latching recess, the tongue and recess of each being positioned at opposite ends of the basket. Each carrier may be separately employed as a two pack carrier. If desired, the carriers may be assembled to form a four pack carrier by placing the latching tongues into respective latching slots and by securing the friction latching tabs of the handle portions together.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing a paper product having a surface with enhanced gloss. The method includes the following steps: Applying a continuous layer of an impressionable coating material to a paper product; contacting the layer of coating material with a polymer release film having a smooth and glossy surface substantially free of defects, the surface having non-adhering and release characteristics; and solidifying the coating material during contact with the release film. Using this technique, a smooth and glossy surface of the release film is substantially imparted to a surface of the layer of solidified coating material. In the case of clay-coated substrates, the coating is solidified by heating, whereas in the case of polyethylene-coated substrates, the coating is solidified by cooling. The end product is a coated substrate in which the coating has a glossy surface to which the texture of a film has been imparted.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for manufacturing partially cut (semi-converted) products in continuous roll form has input feeds for supplying a continuous web of material and a continuous transport web in parallel, feed rollers for incrementally advancing the two webs together to a cutting station where product units are partially cut in successive increments in a continuous strip, a scrap remover, and a station for winding up the cut product strip. The webs are unwound and the cut product strip is wound via dancer bars maintaining constant tension. The input webs have a width which is a multiple of the width of the product units so that multiple strips can be formed simultaneously. The invention is used to form semi-converted, micro diskette liners having connecting portions and indented cutouts marking the boundaries between units. The cutouts are overcut in one direction and also in an intersecting direction to obtain complete cuts despite slight variations in registration.

Abstract: A wrap-around carrier to package a linear series of gable-top liquid cartons is formed from a one piece paperboard blank conformed so that an end flap will cover a major area of an end of the erected carrier to inhibit damage, loss, or pilferage of an object such as a straw temporarily secured to an otherwise exposed side of a contained carton.The top panel is provided with a longitudinally running tear strip, conveniently wide enough to form a returnable card or a coupon, the coupon provided with advertising or other indicia on one or both of its surfaces.

Abstract: A hybrid nonwoven liner for a diskete holder is bonded and impregnated with a small amount of binder which is uniformly distributed throughout the fabric and comprises no more than 5% by weight and preferably between 1.5-3.0% by weight of the fabric. The low concentration of binder ensures that the liner surface does not become totally coated with plastic film that reduces cleaning ability, while also providing a high increase in tensile strength and a significant debris reduction. The binder solution preferably has a high surface tension (low surfactant level), so that the binder beads and becomes dried at junction points of the fibers and evenly distributed throughout the fabric. The low level of surfactant ensures a low risk of chemical attack of the disk media surface.

Abstract: This relates to a beverage dispenser and more particularly to a disposable carton in which a bag containing a selected beverage may be mounted to facilitate the dispensing of the beverage. The carton is of a four piece construction including a tubular multi-sided carton body, a base on which the beverage bag is supported, a support slidably mounted in the carton body for supporting the filler of the beverage bag, and a cap. All necessary components of the carton automatically lock together when folded and no adhesives are required. There is also a cup holder which may be selectively mounted on the carton or which may be supported independently of the beverage dispenser adjacent the beverage dispenser.

Abstract: A corner post construction fashioned from corrugated paperboard of single or more thickness. The corner post is made from a unitary blank of corrugated paperboard, the blank being generally rectangular and provided with three parallel slit scorelines running generally longitudinally of the blank. The scorelines define four generally rectangular panels, with the two innermost panels being of substantially the same width, but with the first and second outermost panels being of respectively greater and different widths. The slit scorelines are reverse cut, with the middle coming in from one surface of the unitary blank and the outer two slit scorelines coming in from the other surface. All three scorelines extend completely through the blank, except for the outermost or facing layers of the corrugated board. After slit scoring, the two outermost panels are glued to their respective next adjacent innermost panels to form the corner post in its storage or shipping condition.

Abstract: Systems for the on-line optical measurement of properties of a translucent moving web, such as paper or plastic, as it is continually produced, colored or otherwise converted. Measured properties include color, reflectance and opacity. A backing roll has a cylindrical or approximately cylindrical surface which comprises at least one optical standard. The roll is positioned such that a circumferential portion of the roll surface contacts the back web surface where the web characteristic is to be measured, with the web curving around the circumferential portion. An optical sensing device is positioned so as to view the front web surface backed by the optical standard or standards. In several embodiments, two sets of reflectance data are collected, one with a "white" optical standard backing and the other with a "black" optical standard backing.

Abstract: A clamshell carton formed from two integral blanks of sheet material. The front wall of the upper clamshell carries a latching aperture. The front wall of the lower clamshell half carriers a latch release panel, the latter carrying a horizontally despaired latching tongue normally engaged in the latching aperture to maintain the clamshell in a closed configuration. The latch release panel is normally resiliently biased to maintain the latch tongue engaged. The front wall of the upper clamshell half is provided with a recess along a free edge, the recess permitting direct finger force to be applied to the latch release panel to open the carton by disengaging the latch.

Abstract: A clamshell or other hinged top cover type carton for hamburgers is provided with a divider sheet formed from paperboard or a paperboard laminate. The ends of the divider sheet extend laterally beyond the side edges of the carton. A bun heel and hot hamburger patty are located in the lower half of the container and a bun crown and various toppings are located in the top container half. The divider sheet separates the hot meat patty from the cooler toppings. For hamburger consumption, the user pulls a laterally extending edge of the divider sheet laterally away from the carton, the bun crown and toppings fall on to the hot hamburger patty and bun heel, thereby preparing the hamburger sandwich. The consumer now opens the carton to gain access to the sandwich.

Abstract: A paperboard carton formed from a unitary blank of paperboard. A side flap of the carton bottom is overlapped with and sealed to a side flap of the top cover. At least one of these flaps is provided with spaced abseal (adhesion resistant) areas. The interabseal areas are provided with adhesive to seal against the other, overlapping flap. The interabseal areas are bordered by cut lines extending partially through the paperboard, and are preferably embossed so as to be raised from the remaining flap area. The other front and side flaps are conventionally sealed together by an adhesive, such as a heat activated PET coating on the paperboard surface. To effect opening, these two flaps are pulled apart with the adhered together, interabseal are a of one of these flaps delaminating by virtue of the cut lines, the latter extending completely through the PET coating.

Abstract: A clamshell attachment for a crescent shaped, concave-convex log grapple converts the log grapple to a scoop or bucket type device for handling bulk material such as wood chips. It consists of a pair of concave-convex scoops pivoted together at their upper ends. A holding pin connects each grapple half to a respective scoop, with the concave portion or side of each grapple half positioned over and adjacent the convex side of a respective scoop. The only modification required of the log grapple is the addition of apertured tabs to its convex sides, the tabs receiving the holding pins.

Abstract: A paperboard partition having particular utility as a partition for spacing and supporting items in a paper bag or any suitable holder is formed from a unitary blank of paperboard. The blank is die cut and provided with a plurality of fold lines. The die cuts define a plurality of locking tabs and also define apertures for receiving the locking tabs when the partition is erected. Two of the panels defined by the fold lines and die cuts are each provided with a spot of glue or other adhesive. Upon initial folding of the blank those panels, termed adhesive panels, which have been provided with glue spots, are attached to corresponding panels. The partition is formed in such a manner that it is collapsed to flat configuration for shipment and/or storage. For use, the user erects the folded partition by unfolding, i.e., spreading several of the panels apart from each other, with the partition then being placed into a paper bag or other holder.

Abstract: A paperboard tray and unitary blank for forming it. Two of the tray blanks may be joined in tandem to form, after erection, a clamshell type carton. The tray is provided with cooperating latching tongues and latching slits to maintain it erected. The specific form of the latching tongues and slits enables the tray sides to tilt outwardly after initial tongue and slit engagement and thus permit stacking. The use of the tongue and slit of this invention also permits tray formation without the need of adhesives, thus permitting safe use of the tray or clamshell carton in serving food, as at the retail level.

Abstract: A paper useful in ion deposition printing. The paper comprises a base sheet or web to which there is applied a coating of a material selected from a group that is at least partially soluble with the binders of the toner employed in the printing process under the conditions of pressure and temperature at which such toner is transferred to the paper in the course of such printing.

Abstract: A tube type carton formed from a unitary blank of paperboard and having at each end closure panels defined by a pair of opposed dust flaps and opposed major and minor closure flaps. The major flaps and two opposite side wall panels of the four side panels are trapezoidal. The remaining two opposite side wall panels are square but of different size. A pair of rectangular interior tucking panels joins one edge of the smaller square side wall panel to the shortest edge of one of the two opposite trapezoidal side wall panels, these interior panels being tucked into the interior of the carton. By virtue of the tucking, the cross-section of the tube is changed from rectangular to trapezoidal. The fully erected configuration of the carton is that of a truncated, right, four-sided, rectangular pyramid.

Abstract: A paperboard carton and plastic pour spout fitment construction for cartons adapted to carry powdered or granular material, particularly foodstuffs. A side wall of the carton is provided with a precut opening to receive the separate fitment. The periphery of the sides of the pour spout bottom wall must be broken from the surrounding fitment by the consumer upon initial use, to permit the spout to pivot for dispensing. The spout is thus held against accidental opening during shipping and handling prior to use, and further, such breaking is automatically tamper evident. The fitment is attached to a side wall of the carton by use of an adhesive or by a plurality of rivet stakes integral with the spout. The rivet stakes are received in complementary punctures bordering the precut opening. The use of plastic for the pour spout fitment insures against metal particles contaminating the contents of the carton.

Abstract: A pair of relatively small spaced apart identical tray type containers for packaging products such as food are formed from a one-piece blank arranged so that, when completed with the contents enclosed, the containers can only be opened by ripping apart integral tamper-proof tear-away portions, not by just separating the flaps or panels.In some embodiments tear strips are provided across the middle panel portion to allow easy severance of the containers from each other.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for recovering constituents and/or heat energy from a fluidized bed combustion process utilizes a single vessel which combines a combustor for fluidized bed combustion of a chemical mixture fed therein and a heat exchange section. Characteristics of the fluidized bed are controlled by withdrawing an appropriate portion of the larger, unburned constituent particles from the bottom of the combustor, and smaller constituent particles are withdrawn by becoming entrained within the gases of combustion and being transported to the heat exchange section. The smaller particles are separated from the gases without the use of a cyclone separator and accumulate as another fluidized bed in the heat exchange section where heat is adsorbed from the particles for recovery purposes and to cool the particles. A portion of the cooled particles is then recirculated to the combustor by, for example, pneumatic transport methods for controlling the operating temperature of the combustion process.
