Abstract: On a display screen, the visual size of a graphical user interface (GUI) widget is scaled based on the distance between the GUI widget and a displayed selection pointer, such as an arrow pointer controlled by a mouse. As the selection pointer is moved toward or away from the widget, the widget changes size. This permits the widget to display additional information, such as icon text, as a user moves a selection pointer closer to the widget.

Abstract: For the transfer of bulk data between a client computer system and at least one server computer system, throughput-relevant information is gathered from system components involved in the transfer. The information gathered is passed to a knowledge base that holds algorithms and data on relations and combinations of throughput-relevant information. By means of the knowledge base a set of performance parameters is generated that are effective to achieve a maximum data throughput. The determined set of performance parameters is used for a setup and configuration of a data transfer controller that controls the system complex for the transfer a maximum of data within a minimum amount of time and to reduce the expenditure for the system setup and configuration before the transfer is started. The data transfer may be part of backup and restore operations of bulk data.

  • Publication number: 20020174163
Abstract: A single normal Java thread referred to as a “waiter” thread is used to prevent premature exit of the Java Virtual Machine during the shutdown process of the server application by waiting for any daemon threads in the JVM to complete execution. Using this mechanism, any daemon thread flagged by the application runs to completion before the JVM is allowed to exit. Once all flagged daemon threads exit, the waiter thread exits and allows the server application to properly terminate. The waiter thread uses an efficient mechanism to maintain a queue of threads. When a daemon thread is flagged, it is simply appended to the end of the queue. The waiter thread waits for the first thread in the queue to complete. Once the first thread in the queue completes, it is removed from the queue. At this point, the queue is searched for any other inactive threads and those threads are also removed from the queue.

Abstract: A method of forming a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate having a buried oxide region that has a greater content of thermally grown oxide as compared to oxide formed by implanted oxygen ions is provided. Specifically, the inventive SOI substrate is formed by utilizing a method wherein oxygen ions are implanted into a surface of a Si-containing substrate that includes a sufficient Si thickness to allow for subsequent formation of a buried oxide region in the Si-containing substrate which has a greater content of thermally grown oxide as compared to oxide formed by the implanted oxygen ions followed by an annealing step.

Abstract: A method of dynamically formatting a speech menu construct can include a series of steps. A markup language document containing a reference to a server-side program can be provided. The server-side program can be programmed to dynamically format data using a voice-enabled markup language. A database can be accessed using the server-side program. The database can have a plurality of data items. Using the voice-enabled markup language, the selected data items can be formatted thereby creating speech menu items. The speech menu items can specify a speech menu construct resulting in a menu interface that is dynamically generated from data in data store, rather than being written by a programmer, and allows the user to “speak to the data.

  • Publication number: 20020171105
Abstract: Steep concentration gradients are achieved in semiconductor device of small sizes formed on SOI or double SOI wafers by using implanted polycrystalline material such as polysilicon as a solid diffusion source. Rapid diffusion of impurities along grain boundaries relative to diffusion rates in monocrystalline materials provides a substantially constant impurity concentration at the interface between polycrystalline material and monocrystalline material. Steepness of the impurity concentration gradient is thus effectively scaled as transistor size is decreased to counter increased short channel and other deleterious effects. In the case of SOI wafers greater uniformity of electrical characteristics are achieved using the high quality of semiconductor material made available therein consistent with the relatively thin active layer.

Abstract: A method of configuring partitions for different circuit or other operational areas on an integrated circuit initially identifies points representing components of an integrated circuit with respect to a coordinate system having a horizontal axis and a vertical axis, and subsequently creates a first isothetic rectangular partition containing all of the identified points of the integrated circuit. The method then continues by subdividing the first isothetic rectangular partition with respect to the horizontal axis by creating a plurality of isothetic rectangular sub-partitions collectively containing all of the identified points of the integrated circuit. Each of the isothetic rectangular sub-partitions is separated by a line parallel to the horizontal axis. These isothetic rectangular sub-partitions collectively encompass a minimum area containing all of the identified points.

Abstract: A method, a system, an apparatus, and a computer program product are presented for reducing synchronization waits when unique sequential identifiers are being allocated for transactions committed to a database that are occurring in a multi-threaded server environment. A transactional object containing an identifier data item is created for a transaction in an object-oriented environment. A pre-process object is then generated that contains the transactional object; when subsequently processed, the pre-process object allocates a sequential identifier value for the identifier data item. The pre-process object is added to a list of pre-process objects that are to be processed prior to completing the transaction, such as committing the transaction to a database.
