Patent number: 4801338Abstract: A process of protective coating of iron and steel products is described, wherein an adherent and rough layer of scale is formed, on which is directly deposited a layer of a protective material. The qualities of the layer of scale result from the fact that the product is shaped hot and the speed of its cooling is controlled so that the resultant thickness of scale is less than a threshold of adherence characteristic of the material and of the temperature at the end of shaping. The layer of protective material is obtained by metallization with zinc or an alloy based on zinc. The invention is principally applicable to long iron and steel products, and in particular to reinforcing bars for concrete.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1987Date of Patent: January 31, 1989Assignee: Institut De Recherches de la Siderurgie (IRSID)Inventors: Daniele Quantin, Francisco Galdon

Patent number: 4799011Abstract: Typical defects are detected on a product moving relative to detecting means. An alternating magnetic field is generated in order to provoke the circulation of eddy currents on the surface of the product. A signal representative of the variations of the eddy currents is collected by means of a differential sensor and is demodulated by projection along an angle of adjustable phase in order to detect the disturbances introduced by the defects to be detected. This angle of phase is determined so that the projection of the collected signal has a minimum mean value, in order to eliminate disturbances of the collected signal due to repetitive surface irregularities. The component of the collected signal obtained by the projection is converted into digital form, and the digital signal thus obtained is filtered using a digital filter whose characteristics are predetermined as a function of a type of defect to be detected.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1986Date of Patent: January 17, 1989Assignee: Institut de Recherches de la Siderurgie Francaise-IRSIDInventor: Jean-Louis Muller

Patent number: 4715205Abstract: In this rolling mill, a rolling action is brought about by work rolls acting as opposing pairs arranged equiangularly at the periphery of rotating rolling units distributed symmetrically about the material to be rolled. The axes (10') of the work rolls (10, 11) are parallel with the axis (40) of the rotating unit that carries them, and each work roll (10) is a solid of revolution consisting of two truncated cones (12, 13) axially joined by their equal minor bases and forming a rounded "waist" in the plane V perpendicular to the axis (10') of the work rolls. The invention is applicable to non-flat metal products whatever their cross-sectional shape. With quadrangular products, the invention assures well-finished radius corners with no chance of twisting.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1986Date of Patent: December 29, 1987Assignee: IRSIDInventor: Bernard Fazan

Patent number: 4665317Abstract: Images of successive portions of a surface of a strip are formed and converted as analog signals. Signals typical of each image are stored in an image storage whereas the analog signals relating to each image are converted in numerical form by splitting up the image into image elements. Each of the image elements is given a numerical value, and then filtered, in order to sense the relative variations of the numerical values of the image elements. To determine whether or not to deliver a defect-sensing signal in terms of the sensed variations, the filtered signal is scanned. The typical image is stored in response to the transmission of the defect signal. Every read-in information is stored and displayed at a check station long enough for a visual check of the image it represents.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 1985Date of Patent: May 12, 1987Assignees: Institute de Recherches de la Siderurgie Francaise (IRSID), USINOR (Soc.
