  • Patent number: 5901772
Abstract: A ring carrier, for use in a piston casting die, is an annular-shaped member having a channel on an outer surface area. The piston casting die includes projections for engaging the channel and supporting the ring carrier within the piston casting die. At least one of the projections is fixed and at least one other of the projections is movable into and out of the piston casting die. The movable projection includes a driving member for urging the movable projection into engagement with the channel for supporting the ring carrier at a predetermined position within the piston casting die.

  • Patent number: 5028493
Abstract: A porous metal supporting a composite portion of an aluminum alloy is formed by means of pressing a pair of surfaces thereof, and then chromium is cemented by diffusion before the molten aluminum alloy is penetrated thereinto. Thus, not only the mechanical strength of the interface between the aluminum alloy and the porous metal, but also the wear resistance of the composite portion can be improved.

  • Patent number: 5022294
Abstract: A cutting apparatus for forming a noncircular cross-section on a workpiece that includes a tool advancing and retreating device. The tool advancing and retreating device includes a central shaft on which is to be mounted a tool, a journal for supporting the central shaft, a movable plate fixed to the central shaft, and electromagnets positioned opposite to one another such that the movable plate is interposed between the electromagnets with a clearance between the plate and the electromagnets. A device is provided for detecting the rotational angle of the main shaft and a displacement sensor is included for detecting the longitudinal displacement of the central shaft. A speed sensor detects the speed of the longitudinal displacement of the central shaft and an arrangement is provided for controlling the electric current passing through the electromagnets based on the output signals from the rotational angle detecting device, from the displacement sensor and from the speed sensor.

  • Patent number: 4987867
Abstract: A piston for internal combustion engines has a piston-ring groove which is strengthened with a composite layer based on porous metal which is embedded around the piston-ring groove. The porous metal contains at least more than 10% Cr, and the volumetric ratio of the porous metal is between 8 to 70%, so that even though the engine is put in action under high heat loads, no crack is initiated in the piston.
