  • Patent number: 4252640
Abstract: An apparatus for sorting a fibrous suspension for removing both heavy weight and light weight particulate impurities is disclosed. An antechamber is positioned above a main chamber. Fibrous stock suspension is inletted tangentially to the antechamber and moves down to the main chamber. An annular rotor in the main chamber creates a vortex of the fibrous stock suspension, which drives the heavier particulate impurities to the side wall of the main chamber and moves the lighter weight impurities toward the center of the vortex. The heavier weight impurities fall to the bottom of the main chamber from which they are removed. The lighter weight impurities are removed by a drainage line extending toward the center of the antechamber. Above the rotor is a strainer and the rotor cooperates with the strainer to drive purified fluid suspension to an annular outlet chamber surrounding the bottom of the antechamber and from there into an outlet line.

  • Patent number: 4243483
Abstract: The disclosure concerns a head box for use in a paper making machine, or the like. The open channel through the head box leading to the outlet opening has at least one and more usually a plurality of guide surfaces extending through the channel. The guide surfaces are supported between the side walls of the head box and are spaced from the top and bottom of the head box and, when a plurality of guide surfaces are provided, they are spaced vertically from each other. The guide surfaces are comprised of flexible foil-like material. The guide surfaces are anchored at pivots at their upstream ends and are supported intermediate their lengths toward the outlet openings by a respective tab projecting from each side edge thereof into a receiving slot in the respective side wall of the head box. A tension spring operates in opposition to the shifting of the tab and the guide surface under the influence of the flow through the head box.

  • Patent number: 4243478
Abstract: Water used in the treatment of waste paper is now commonly re-cycled. Hard water is required for such processes. For maintaining the hardness of the water, the re-cycled water is hardened by dissolving calcium carbonate and carbon dioxide in it, thereby forming calcium bicarbonate. An apparatus for hardening the water comprises a mixing container with inlets for waste water, carbon dioxide, and calcium carbonate, and with outlets for foam, hardened water and undissolved calcium carbonate.

  • Patent number: 4238324
Abstract: The disclosure concerns an apparatus for separating impurities from a fibrous suspension. The apparatus includes a tiltable housing having a screen basket supported coaxially therein. A rotor is supported inside the screen basket. The rotor has three zones. There is an upstream zone communicating with the fiber suspension inlet, and inlet in the upstream zone is into the interior of the rotor and then outward past sorting vanes formed at the exterior of the rotor in the first zone and inside of the basket. Downstream of the transport vanes is a second baffle zone defined by a closed drum having transport vanes on the outside thereof. The suspension and impurities are moved downstream by the transport vanes in the second zone. Downstream of the second zone is a third zone with further means for moving impurities downstream, comprising either a centrifugal impeller in the form of vanes or a helical ring.

  • Patent number: 4234382
Abstract: A former for a paper machine: The paper machine includes a perforated forming cylinder and a suction device for drawing water inward through the perforations. An inner and an outer belt are wrapped around the forming cylinder. The outer belt meets the inner belt at the peripheral surface of the forming cylinder in a generally wedge-shaped inlet slot located at and upstream of the bottom of the forming cylinder. A pulp fiber suspension nozzle of a width that covers the axial length of the forming cylinder injects pulp into the inlet slot. A supporting device is provided at the inlet slot and includes a convexly curved surface, convexly curved around an axis generally parallel to the cylinder axis. The supporting device includes a concavely curved surface that follows the convexly curved surface downstream of the flow of pulp. A suction device communicates with the concavely curved surface beneath the outer belt. The outer belt rides over the convexly curved surface and down onto the concavely curved surface.

  • Patent number: 4231526
Abstract: A process and plant for treating waste paper in which a beater is employed for rough-pulping the waste paper followed by a first sorting stage from which the separated-out foreign matter is processed further in a subsidiary circuit which includes a vibratory sorter for lightweight foreign matter and a hydrocyclone for heavy foreign matter, the fibers separated out during this further processing being returned again to the treatment process. In the first sorting stage, a sufficiently rigorous separation process is carried out to remove the greater part of the foreign matter, together with unpulped lumps of fibers, which is then passed to the subsidiary circuit in which it and half-stuffs still containing foreign matter, which have been sorted in the hydro-cyclone and in the vibratory sorter, are subjected together to a multi-stage further sorting and speck-removing process.

  • Patent number: 4225286
Abstract: A device for generating a thrust in a liquid utilizing rotating cylinders. The cylinders are mounted on a rotatable hub and rotate about their own axes relative to the hub. The relative rotation follows, preferably, a sinusoidal path for producing the thrust, and in particular, each cylinder undergoes a reversal in its direction of rotation after each half rotation of the hub. A common control bar is included which is connected to each cylinder and eccentrically with respect to the axis of rotation of the hub so that the points of reversal and the direction of thrust can be adjusted.

  • Patent number: 4222531
Abstract: The invention concerns a wood pulper of the kind in which wood is fed via a hopper having advancing elements arranged on two opposite sides by which wood is advanced to a grinding stone. The invention is characterized in that said advancing elements comprise a plurality of driven shafts which are arranged parallel to and adjacent each other substantially transverse to the feed direction, said shafts being equipped with a plurality of toothed discs lying adjacent to each other. This arrangement enables the driving force to be distributed over a plurality of feed shafts, so that a continuous compression can be obtained which increases as the wood feeds through the hopper.

  • Patent number: 4194968
Abstract: Waste paper is fed into a horizontal drum and therein treated with suitable liquids to form pulp. A magnetic device is disposed adjacent one side of the drum to produce a magnetic field along one arcuate section and extending from the upper portion toward the bottom thereof. Magnetic particles mixed with the paper are carried by said arcuate section of the drum by virtue of the influence of the magnetic field until they reach the top where they leave the field and then fall downwardly into an inclined trough from which they gravitate to the exterior of the drum. Pulp is concurrently discharged from the drum.
