  • Patent number: 5628589
Abstract: An internal pull broach is disclosed for roughing, semi-finishing and finishing at least one wall in a workpiece during a single stroke machining operation. The broach includes an elongated cutting tool holder having a longitudinal axis and a plurality of laterally extending, longitudinally spaced pockets. Cutter inserts are disposed in each of the pockets to define a plurality of sequentially acting protuberances. Each protuberance has a cutting edge extending laterally with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tool holder substantially across an entire width of the tool holder for progressively cutting into the wall of the workpiece sequentially as the tool holder moves during the single stroke along a fixed path coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the tool holder.

  • Patent number: 5341710
Abstract: A coupling structure includes a coupling member having a cylindrical, axially slotted end with a cylindrical opening extending therethrough and perpendicular thereto having an axis of generation parallel to the sides of the slot and including a conical surface, a conical member within the opening having a conical surface in contact with the opening's conical surface and threaded structure for axially adjustably securing the conical member in the opening. A tapered liner may surround the slotted end of the coupling member and a threaded insert may be provided over one end of the opening for receiving an end of the conical member. One embodiment includes one conical surface in the opening and one conical member provided within the opening. A second embodiment includes two separate conical surfaces in the opening along with two separate conical members in opposite ends of the opening connected by and axially adjustable along a liner member.

  • Patent number: 5232317
Abstract: A rotatable cutting tool for cutting a spherical seat carries a plurality of indexable cutting inserts at the front end of the cutter body. The inserts are located in pockets and retained in the pockets by respective retainer members mounted on the body and overlying the exposed face of the insert. A reduced diameter section at the rearward end of the cutter body is dimensional to be rotatably received in a bore extending through a plate-like hanger. A retainer plate is cooperable with headed cap screws projecting from the rear end of the reduced diameter section of the body to constitute a quick disconnect coupling for rapid mounting and dismounting of the cutter upon its hanger. The cutting edges of the inserts lie in respective axial planes offset forwardly, with respect to the direction of rotation of the tool, from the axis of rotation and angularly offset from each other by unequal angles.

  • Patent number: 5211088
Abstract: A cutting tool having a main body with a longitudinal axis and one or more slide receiving slots. A cutter carrying slide is slidably received within the slide receiving slot in the body for sliding movement relative to the body along a first slide path extending generally normal to the longitudinal axis. A slide positioning member is provided for shifting the cutter carrying slide along the slide path between a retracted position and a cutting position. An anti-backlash device is also provided for establishing and maintaining firm contact between opposing surfaces of the slide and the slide positioning member during movement of the slide toward the cutting position. The anti-backlash device increases force urging the opposing surfaces into contact with each other as radial displacement increases between the slide and an axis of rotation.

  • Patent number: 5086676
Abstract: A machine tool and method for simultaneously boring, facing and back boring three bores in a differential carrier with three tools that rotate coaxially with their spindle axes. Each tool has a first slide at its free end that carries a first cutting insert for back boring a first diameter and then generating a radial face that serves as a bearing seat on the differential carrier. Each tool also has a second slide carrying a second insert for boring a second diameter. The construction, arrangement and movement of the two slides are correlated with each other to maintain the tool in balance during extension and retraction of both slides. In the preferred embodiment the first insert must be retracted when it is advanced into the carrier, extended to back bore and then retracted to generate a radial face. The second insert is at the same location circumferentially of the tool. One insert is retracted while the other insert is extended, and vice versa, to maintain the tool in balance.

  • Patent number: 5066178
Abstract: Adapter structure for and method of securing a draw bar actuated tool to a spindle having an actuating draw bar extending therethrough. The structure includes coupling members for securing the adapter structure to the actuating draw bar and to the tool draw bar and structure permitting relative rotation between the tool and spindle with the actuating draw bar and tool draw bar securely engaged. In one embodiment, the adapter structure is entirely separate from the tool while in another embodiment, the adapter structure includes a modified tool and tool draw bar.The method of the invention includes the steps of securing a tool including a tool draw bar therein to an actuating draw bar extending through a spindle, rotating the tool and tool draw bar with respect to the actuating draw bar to align securing means on the spindle and tool without relative axial movement between the draw bars and subsequently securing the tool to the spindle.
