  • Patent number: 4918768
Abstract: An air valve for controlling the supply of air to a venturi jet of a spa includes a housing, a cylindrical barrel, means for sealing between the housing and the barrel, and means for rotating the barrel. The housing has an interior chamber extending between an open, cylindrical bore at one end and a pipe coupling at the other end. The housing mounts on the inside wall of the spa, with the open end of the bore facing the inside of the spa and the rest of the housing extending through the side wall and positioned outside the spa. The cylindrical barrel is insertable into and rotatably mounted within the cylindrical bore of the housing. The housing and barrel each include ports that, when overlapping, provide a path for air to flow from a point exterior of the housing, through the overlapping ports, through the interior of the barrel and housing to the pipe coupling. Rotating the barrel to a position where the ports do not overlap blocks the air flow path.

  • Patent number: 4776759
Abstract: An improved drive shaft seal including a first sealing ring to be mounted within a housing, a second sealing ring to be mounted within the housing in contact with the first sealing ring in such a manner that one ring rotates relative to the other, and a thermally conductive cup having an end portion to be mounted in contact with one of the rings within the housing and a wall portion extending outside the housing. Heat is dissipated from the rings through the cup to the atmosphere surrounding the housing. In a preferred embodiment, the wall portion of the cup is perforated and ring-shaped so as to have large surface area and a large surface area-to-volume ratio. In another preferred embodiment, a fan is mounted outside the housing so as to blow air past the wall portion of the cup. The invention may be embodied in a pump, in which the first sealing ring is attached to the pump drive shaft so as to rotate with the drive shaft.

  • Patent number: 4233694
Abstract: A spa construction for use by humans comprising a shell for containing water and having a well for receiving the feet of the user. A seat is provided adjacent the well upon which the user can sit. A side wall is provided against which the user can rest his back. A first pump is provided having an inlet coupled into the bottom portion of the shell for withdrawing water from within the shell and an outlet coupled to the shell above the seat for introducing jets of water into the shell. An air inlet is provided for mixing air into the jets of water introduced into the shell. A filter and heater housing is carried by the shell and has disposed therein filter and heater elements. An additional pump is provided having an inlet coupled to the shell for drawing water from the shell into the filter and heater housing and discharging the same through an outlet coupled to the shell.

  • Patent number: 4153954
Abstract: A combination tub and shower for installation in a home as a unit, an enclosure formed of a generally horizontal bottom wall and a substantially vertical sidewall extending upwardly from the bottom wall to a height which is greater than that of an adult human being so that the enclosure can serve as a shower stall. The sidewall has an opening formed therein which is spaced a substantial distance above the bottom wall so that the lower portion of the enclosure can serve as a tub for an adult human being. The opening serves to permit ingress and egress of a human being with respect to the shower stall and the tub. A vertically extending wall member is secured to the enclosure and extends outwardly from one side of the enclosure and has a frontal surface which faces in generally the same direction as the opening in the enclosure.
