Publication number: 20110156933Abstract: A serializer device is used for generation, from a parallel digital signal, of a clock signal or a serial binary data signal having a pre-determined amount of jitter. A binary number having consecutive groups of ones and zeroes, when serialized by the serializer device, produces a clock signal. By varying the number of ones and zeroes on the binary number, a pre-determined amount of jitter can be generated. Use of sigma-delta modulation in combination with a phase-locked loop circuitry allows one to obtain a smoothly varying jitter of the output signal.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 23, 2010Publication date: June 30, 2011Applicant: JDS Uniphase CorporationInventors: David J. Patent number: 7969647Abstract: A change in loading conditions of fiber amplifiers in an optical communications network causes rapid variations in the gain profile of the amplifiers due to spectral hole burning and stimulated Raman scattering. An apparatus for reducing such gain profile variations is described which monitors optical signal perturbations and reacts by adjusting pump powers of the amplifiers and, or fast variable optical attenuator according to a pre-determined function stored in the form of constants in controller's memory. The optical signal is monitored as total power, and the power of light after passing through one or more optical filters. The light detection is relatively fast, whereby the gain profile variations are compensated by fast controlled variable optical attenuator and pump power adjustment upon the change in loading conditions.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 2008Date of Patent: June 28, 2011Assignee: JDS Uniphase CorporationInventors: Maxim Bolshtyansky, Gregory Cowle

Patent number: 7957438Abstract: A method for monitoring laser light launched into a core of a single mode fiber includes launching a portion of light directly into the cladding about the core. The cladding launched light is a known fraction of the core launched light and can be monitored by placing a detector about the cladding. Detected light including light that was launched into the cladding and has leaked through the cladding is used as a known fraction of light in the core and can be used to control the laser light source. This can be done with a straight section of single mode optical fiber and does not require bending the fiber. Advantageously, most of the core launched light remains in the core as guided light.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 2008Date of Patent: June 7, 2011Assignee: JDS Uniphase CorporationInventors: David Simons, Boris Kharlamov, James Wong, Vincent Issier, Andy Miller, James Nunley

Publication number: 20110121556Abstract: Pigment flakes are blended together wherein some are magnetically alignable and exhibit a color shift from a first color to a second color with a change in viewing angle; and some are pigment flakes which exhibit a color shift from the first color to a third color or vice versa with a change in viewing angle, wherein the first, second and third colors are three different colors. The flakes are coated upon a substrate and magnetically alignable flakes are magnetically aligned. The non-magnetically alignable flakes are not aligned by the magnetic field and lie flat upon the substrate they are coated on. By judiciously selecting the angle upon which the magnetic flakes are oriented, an effect is created whereby an observer sees a color shift from a first color to a second or a first color to a third, when orienting the substrate by tilting it at different particular angles. The coated substrate can be used in security applications such as on currency or secure instruments.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 30, 2010Publication date: May 26, 2011Applicant: JDS Uniphase CorporationInventors: Vladimir P. Patent number: 7948974Abstract: Creating a low-bandwidth channel in a high-bandwidth channel. By taking advantage of extra bandwidth in a high-bandwidth channel, a low-bandwidth channel is created by inserting extra packets. When an inter-packet gap of the proper duration is detected, the extra packet is inserted and any incoming packets on the high-bandwidth channel are stored in an elastic buffer. Observing inter-packet gaps, minimal latency is introduced in the high-bandwidth channel when there is no extra packet in the process of being sent, and the effects of sending a packet on the low-bandwidth channel are absorbed and distributed among other passing traffic.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2007Date of Patent: May 24, 2011Assignee: JDS Uniphase CorporationInventors: Slawomir K. Patent number: 7945661Abstract: A method for real time monitoring of at least one TCP flow involves monitoring TCP packets flowing past a particular point in a TCP network. A flow trace including at least source and destination addresses for each TCP packet is determined and a packet record for each monitored TCP packet within a determined flow trace is created. Each of the packet records includes at least a transmitted order number and an actual received sequence number, from which an expected received sequence number for each packet record is determined and stored in the packet record. The difference between the expected received sequence number for each packet record and the expected received sequence number for the previous packet record is used to thereby determine by how much a particular packet was moved out of sequence.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 2006Date of Patent: May 17, 2011Assignee: JDS Uniphase CorporationInventors: Andrew Lehane, Martin Curran-Gray, Colin Arthur, Demessie Girma

Patent number: 7936916Abstract: A video quality measurement (VQM) system for a video stream includes a neural network VQM module having a constructed architecture to calculate a video quality metric based on a hybrid of image metric and packet metric of the video stream. An image metric measuring module receives the video stream and calculates the image metric of the video stream. A packet metric measuring module obtains information about packet-level characteristics of the video stream to calculate the packet metric. The image metric and the packet metric are inputted to the neural network VQM module to calculate the video quality metric. The VQM system further includes a VQM test-bed that determines and validates the architecture of the neural network VQM module. Furthermore, a video quality measurement (VQM) method based on a hybrid of image metric and packet metric is also described.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 2007Date of Patent: May 3, 2011Assignee: JDS Uniphase CorporationInventors: Chunhong Zhang, Xin-yu Ma, Guosong Zhang
