Patent number: 6998006Abstract: A heat transfer decorating machine is disclosed. In particular, the disclosed heat transfer decorating machine provides mechanisms to allow the machine to be rapidly re-configured from applying labels to a particular article configuration to applying labels to a different article configuration by an operator without substantial use of tools. In addition, the disclosed heat transfer labeling machine features a distributed drive system which provides a motor for all major movable mechanical elements rather than use a centralized drive system with a distributed transmission. Further, the disclosed heat transfer decorating machine is capable of labeling filled and chilled articles by providing for removal of environmental contamination prior to application of the labels.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2003Date of Patent: February 14, 2006Assignee: Jefferson Smurfit CorporationInventors: Leonard J. Patent number: 5997692Abstract: A system for applying a suspension of uncooked starch particles in water to a web on a forming wire includes a source of such suspension and a source of dilution water, an application die positioned transversely of the web with an internal manifold opening into a downwardly opening die slot through which material flows from the manifold as a falling curtain onto the web. The die has a plurality of transversely spaced inlets leading into the manifold to define transversely spaced application zones across the web. The suspended starch and water are applied from the manifolds through control valves into the inlets by means of which the consistency or concentration of the starch may be varied at positions representing the application zones across the web to provide a desired strength profile to the dried web.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1997Date of Patent: December 7, 1999Assignees: GL&V-Paper Machine Group, Inc., Jefferson-Smurfit CorporationInventors: John A. Patent number: 5988491Abstract: A package including an outer container, with upper narrow flanges, and which can be folded into the container form, and includes interiorly thereof at least one liner, the liner being shaped so as to provide for its interfitting within the container, having clearance on at least two opposite sides from the container walls, while the other two walls of the liner are contiguous with, or adhesively connected to, the interior of the other two walls of the container. The liner has beveled panels, at its corners, so that when the container of the package is folded into a flattened configuration, the liner follows suit, and can likewise be folded simultaneously flat with the container, so that the package blank can then be shipped or stored in that condition.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 1998Date of Patent: November 23, 1999Assignee: Jefferson Smurfit CorporationInventor: Mark D. Patent number: 5985030Abstract: A method of applying a starch sizing to a forming web on a paper machine, such as in the form of a curtain on a fourdrinier machine, employs a suspension of uncooked particulate starch and water which is applied, as a suspension, to the inlet of a downwardly opening die positioned over the forming web and applied at a consistency of between about 2 to 10% onto the surface of the web as a free falling curtain, the impact velocity of which is controlled to a rate sufficiently low to prevent distortion of the web on impact. Improved drainage is achieved by heating the suspension to a temperature less than about 150.degree., to prevent the cooking of the starched particles. The curtain may be applied to the web at fourdrinier table consistencies as low as about 2% and still obtain starch retention rates of about 80%.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 1997Date of Patent: November 16, 1999Assignees: GL&V-Paper Machine Group, Inc., Jefferson Smurfit Corporation (U.S.)Inventors: John Andrew Taylor, Marcus Francis Foulger, Joseph Edgar Parisian, III, Hanuman Prasad Didwania

Patent number: 5944183Abstract: A carton has an outer box and a liner that is glued to an inner surface of the box during assembly. The outer box includes front and back panels joined by perpendicularly extending side panels, and top and bottom panel that define a chamber therebetween in which can be inserted manuals, literature, documentation or the like. The liner is disposed in the chamber of the box. The liner includes a front panel and a back panel joined by perpendicularly extending side panels. The front, back and side panels have dimensions substantially similar to those of the front, back and side panels of the box, respectively. The liner further including a plurality of cutouts in the front panel that define a retaining panel and sidewalls. Upon assembly of the carton, the cutouts allow the retaining panel to move inwardly into the chamber so that the sidewalls extend substantially perpendicularly between the front panel of the liner and the retaining panel.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1998Date of Patent: August 31, 1999Assignee: Jefferson Smurfit CorporationInventors: Angela L.
