  • Patent number: 8011347
Abstract: An exhaust brake has a body with a passageway for exhaust gases therein. A valve member is movably located within the passageway for selective movement between an open position where the valve member opens the passageway and exhaust gases are free to move through the passageway and a closed position where the valve member blocks the passageway and the passage of exhaust gases through the passageway. The valve member has an aperture therethrough to permit a limited flow of exhaust gases through the aperture when the aperture is open. An exhaust valve actuator mechanism is coupled to the valve member for moving the valve member between the open position and the closed position. A closure member is positioned adjacent to the aperture.

  • Patent number: 7063099
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an exhaust gas control (EGC) valve. The EGC valve comprises a valve housing having at least one inlet port, at least one outlet port, and a flow channel having a centerline extending between the ports. A valve seat is adjacent an opening in the at least one outlet port. The EGC valve further comprises a rotatable actuator shaft offset from the centerline. At least one L-shaped valve armature is operably connected to the actuator shaft. The valve armature has a first leg and a second leg. The first leg is connected to the actuator shaft so that rotation of the actuator shaft in a first direction positions the second leg into sealing engagement with the valve seat to close the flow channel.

  • Publication number: 20050224046
Abstract: An apparatus and method for retarding an engine having a cylinder with an exhaust valve, an intake valve, an intake stroke, an exhaust stroke, a compression stroke and an expansion stroke. The apparatus includes an exhaust brake and a compression release brake. The exhaust brake includes a variable exhaust restrictor, a pressure sensor for sensing pressure of exhaust gases and a controller operatively connected to the pressure sensor and to the exhaust restrictor. Opening of the exhaust restrictor is adjusted during operation of the apparatus so exhaust pressure is sufficient to cause exhaust valve float prior to bottom dead center of intake strokes of the cylinder, thereby enhancing operation of the compression release brake.

  • Patent number: 6925976
Abstract: A variable valve actuation system for providing discrete exhaust and intake valve lift profiles for various operating modes of an internal combustion engine. The variable valve actuation system includes exhaust and intake rocker assemblies, exhaust and intake hydraulic extension devices operatively coupling corresponding rocker assemblies with respective engine valves and exhaust and intake control valves for selectively supplying the pressurized hydraulic fluid to the extension devices so as to independently switch them between a pressurized condition and a depressurized condition. The engine further includes an exhaust brake provided to initiate a small lift of the exhaust valve during the engine braking operation while the exhaust extension device maintains the exhaust valve open during a compression stroke for bleeder-compression release braking. The exhaust and intake valves can be adjusted independently to provide combinations of valve lift modes.

  • Patent number: 6810850
Abstract: A controlled exhaust brake for an engine comprises an exhaust restrictor located in an exhaust system downstream of an exhaust manifold of an engine. An actuator operably associated with the restrictor adjusts the restrictor. A pressure sensor operably associated with the exhaust manifold senses pressure in the exhaust manifold. A controller determines a set pressure in the exhaust manifold correlated with speed of the engine. The controller is in communication with the pressure sensor and the actuator, and causes adjustment of the restrictor in order to achieve and maintain the set pressure in the exhaust manifold.

  • Patent number: 6386160
Abstract: A valve control apparatus is provided for an internal combustion engine having a valve and a camshaft. The camshaft has an axis of rotation, a first raised portion and a second raised portion adjacent to the first raised portion. The second raised portion is angularly spaced-apart about the axis from the first raised portion. The apparatus includes a follower operatively engagable with the camshaft and the valve. The follower has a first operational mode where the first raised portion operatively engages the follower on each revolution of the camshaft to open the valve a first time on each revolution. There is a mechanism for selectively putting the follower in a second operational mode where the second raised portion operatively engages the follower to open the valve a second time on each revolution of the camshaft. The mechanism puts the follower in the second operational mode on each revolution of the camshaft before the second raised portion is fully aligned with the follower.

  • Patent number: 5445248
Abstract: An exhaust brake system is provided with a compact housing having an exhaust gas passage and an nonsymmetrical, rotatable restricter valve member. The restricter valve member includes a shaft with a restricter shield mounted thereon. The restricter valve member is rotatable from an open position with its shield parallel to the exhaust gas flow to a closed position is perpendicular to the exhaust gas flow. The restricter shield is dimensionally sized with reference to the exhaust brake housing so that a gap is formed therebetween when the restricter shield is in its closed position. The nonsymmetrical design of the restricter valve member creates a weathervane effect, so that the restricter valve will always return to the open position, when it is disconnected from the actuator. The compact design allows direct engine or turbocharger mounting using appropriate connectors.

  • Patent number: 5215054
Abstract: A valve control apparatus particularly suited for a diesel engine brake. There is an hydraulic actuator having a piston which contacts the valve stem of an exhaust valve. The actuator is independent of the exhaust valve opening mechanism. There is a device, such as an electromagnetically activated valve, which can releasably shut off a flow of fluid from the hydraulic actuator after the exhaust valve is opened by the exhaust valve opening mechanism. The exhaust valve is prevented from closing until a flow of fluid from the hydraulic cylinder is permitted just before top dead center of the compression stroke.

  • Patent number: 5105782
Abstract: A method and apparatus for braking a multicylinder diesel engine. Some compressed gases are released from each engine cylinder near top dead center of each compression stroke on each cycle of the engine by forcing open the exhaust valve with a slave piston assembly of a two-stage master and slave cylinder combination. The slave piston assembly is moved by a master piston assembly which operatively engages an engine component which moves prior to top dead center of each compression stroke. The ratio of the area of the master piston assembly to the slave piston assembly is then increased and the exhaust valve is then opened to a preset fully cracked open position during a second stage of the master and slave cylinder combination. Loading on the engine component is reduced during the first stage and the rate of opening the exhaust valve is increased during the second stage when the force required to further open the exhaust valve has been reduced.

  • Patent number: 5036810
Abstract: A compression relieve type braking apparatus comprising a slave piston, a master piston, a housing defining a first passageway, and a pressure release mechanism. The first passageway interconnects the master piston and the slave piston. The master piston is responsive to the engine cycle in a manner to move between a first master piston position and a second master piston position. The pressure release means is responsive to positioning of the master piston in a manner to relieve pressure in the first passageway when the matter piston (in moving between the first and second master piston positions) reaches a predetermined relief location. The relief of the pressure acts to cause the exhaust valve to retract.
