  • Patent number: 5347682
Abstract: A two position floor lock and caster assembly for a bed or the like includes a bracket adapted to be secured to the bed frame. A pair of links have ends pivoted to the bracket and free ends. A socket is pivotally joined to the free ends of the links so that rotation of the links raises and lowers the socket. A caster may be secured to the bracket or attached to the socket. A foot or floor lock may be secured to the bracket or the socket. A crank assembly is operatively connected to the links for raising and lowering the socket to move the floor lock or caster into operative engagement with the floor.

  • Patent number: 5337428
Abstract: An adjustable bed includes a base frame, a mattress frame and linkage for mounting the mattress frame for relative movement with respect to the base frame. A mechanical jack is operatively connected to the base frame and the linkage for moving the mattress frame between high and low positions. A mechanical jack includes an enclosure. A bearing supports a ram within the enclosure for extension and retraction. A drive plate and a hold plate define apertures through which the ram extends. A drive bar is shifted by rotation of an actuator shaft to lock the drive plate to the ram and extend the ram from the housing. The drive spring resiliently biases the drive plate to an unlocked or return position. A hold spring biases the hold plate to a locked position to prevent return movement of the ram into the enclosure. A release bar is shifted into engagement with the hold plate upon reverse rotation of the actuator shaft to release the plate and permit lowering of the ram into the enclosure.

  • Patent number: 5245718
Abstract: An adjustable bed includes a base frame and a mattress frame having a plurality of pivotally interconnected sections. A plurality of links are positioned between the base frame and the mattress frame. The mattress frame may be moved between a high position and a low position. A single linear actuator is connected to the mattress frame. The actuator is extendable and retractable to raise and lower the mattress frame with the mattress frame sections in a common plane. The actuator may also be retracted when the mattress frame is in the low position to articulate the mattress frame sections.

  • Patent number: 5173975
Abstract: An adjustable bed includes a patient operated linear positioner, a rail assembly and a leg lift mechanism. The patient operated linear positioner includes a subassembly with a bellcrank which pivots by a patient operated soft strap. When the strap is pulled, the bellcrank pushes a cable inward which, in turn, releases a positioner rod so that the bed may be adjusted. The side rail assembly includes a J-shaped attachment bar and an idler link which acts to move the side rail both upward and forward when the head section of the adjustable bed is raised. A bed side rail may be attached to a bed frame through the use of a unique attachment mechanism which requires no tools. A further aspect of the invention utilizes a scissors-type leg lifting mechanism for holding and controlling the rate of collapsing movement of the foot section of a bed mattress frame. The leg lifting mechanism includes a mechanical lock and gas piston subassembly.

  • Patent number: 5163968
Abstract: Hardware for securing a headboard or footboard to a bed frame includes a socket adapted to be secured to the bed frame, a configured member adjustably disposed within the socket and supporting a mounting plate. The configured member includes an offset end to which the mounting plate is secured. The configured member is provided in mirror image versions permitting a headboard to be positioned at various heights above or at the floor. Axial adjustment of the configured member in the socket adapts the hardware to an adjustable, mechanical bed having multiple pivotally interconnected sections. A swing-apart dual king bracket assembly includes a first, generally U-shaped hinge plate having a base attachable to the mounting bracket of the headboard assembly. A second hinge plate is connected to the first hinge plate by a pivot pin. The second hinge plate may be secured to a headboard or to another bracket assembly mounted on an adjacent bed frame.

  • Patent number: 5105486
Abstract: An adjustable care bed includes a base frame which supports a mattress frame. The mattress frame includes a head section, a seat or intermediate section and a foot or leg section all of which are pivotally interconnected. A first link and positioner subassembly interconnects the head section with the seat section. A second link and positioner subassembly interconnects the seat section with the leg or foot section. Each link and positioner subassembly includes a link fixed to one of the sections and having a free end. A bracket is fixed to the intermediate section. An elongated rod has an end pivoted to the bracket and a free end which extends through a lock housing. The lock housing is pivoted to the free end of the fixed link. A lock mechanism selectively locks or positions the rod with respect to the lock housing. The bed further includes an extendable caster subassembly, and a hi/low mechanism for raising the mattress frame with respect to the base frame, and a leg lift mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4828208
Abstract: A table is provided with a single retractable caster to facilitate manually transporting the table from one location to another. The retractable caster is located substantially directly below the center of gravity of the table, so that when the caster is extended to an "on" position, the table can be held in a generally poised condition over the caster wheel, and manually rolled across the floor. A pedestal-type base, having radially outwardly extending feet with glides provides outrigger support for the table during transport. The caster is shifted between the extended "on" position, and a retracted "off" position by simply tilting the table slightly about its base, such that a person having ordinary strength and dexterity can easily and safely move the table about a room without assistance.

  • Patent number: 4680790
Abstract: A bedside control module is provided for healthcare stations and the like, of the type generally having a bed, and at least two control functions, such as bed adjustments, nurse call, telephone, television, radio, lights, and other such accessories. The control module includes a dual-sided control panel that is supported by an arm at a position adjacent to the bed for access by the user. Both sides of the control panel include manually-operable controllers for operating the various control functions. The control panel is rotatably mounted on the support arm for manual rotation about a normally, generally vertical axis that is oriented to selectively and sequentially present the opposite sides of the control panel to the user to regulate the various control functions.

  • Patent number: 4660236
Abstract: A free-engaging drive unit is provided for adjustable beds and the like of the type having a mattress support frame or bedspring supported by two detachable end panels. A crank is mounted on one of the end panels, preferably at the foot of the bed, and is positioned at a conveniently accessible height and location. The adjustable bed has at least one controller shaft, which is rotated to adjust an associated portion of the bed. The free-engaging drive unit includes a drive coupling mounted on the foot end panel and a mating driven coupling mounted on an adjacent portion of the bedspring. When the foot end panel is connected with the bedspring, the drive and driven couplings automatically mesh to operatively connect the crank with the controller shaft, and thereby effect bed adjustment.
