Abstract: An apparatus for crushing workpieces includes a drive mechanism having a gear reduction train and a moveable rack member which is centered above a compression plate for even, linear force transmission. Force is transmitted to the rack member on two opposite sides thereof by a pair of pinions which engage opposite rows of rack teeth. The compression plate is integral with a pair of opposite guide sleeves, which are mounted for sliding movement with respect to vertically extending guideposts. A crimper mechanism is mounted to the compression plate for crimping the workpiece prior to compression. The combination of the improved drive train, which prevents jamming of the apparatus due to uneven force transmission, and the crimper mechanism allows a relatively small motor to be used in the unit, which increases its portability, economy and affordability.
