Patents Assigned to John O. Butler Company
  • Patent number: 4222143
Abstract: An elongated preferably plastic handle has a sleeve lock on the tip end. When a twisted wire brush is placed in the handle, there is a guy wire effect from the sleeve which holds the brush firmly in place, as the sleeve stretches slightly over a bent end of the twisted wire of the brush. The inventive handle also holds the end of a wooden toothpick, which may be broken without leaving any exposed jagged fibers which could form splinters.

  • Patent number: 4162688
Abstract: A floss holder includes a bobbin of preferably unwaxed floss which feeds through a chamber containing a medication, such as fluoride. While in the chamber, the floss passes through a number of bearing surfaces for squeezing the medication into the floss without disturbing the lay of the fibers in the floss. After leaving the medication chamber, the floss passes out of the floss holder, over a stand-off prong and to a cutter. A clutch may be provided in the bobbin to maintain a floss tension throughout the medication chamber.

  • Patent number: 4141519
Abstract: A spool of thread, such as dental floss, is housed in a holder, preferably made of plastic. The thread or floss is wound on a bobbin having a hollow, cylindrical hub area. A clutch for controlling the bobbin rotation comprises a split post having an enlarged cross section near the center thereof. The split post fits into the hollow, cylindrical hub area of the bobbin with the post squeezed slightly to provide a desired amount of friction between the central post and the cylindrical hub walls. The friction keeps the bobbin from unwinding; however, the friction is not so great that it keeps the thread or floss from pulling smoothly and evenly from the bobbin.

  • Patent number: 4073419
Abstract: A spool of thread, such as dental floss, is housed in a two-part shell or holder, preferably made of plastic. The floor on the bottom one of the shell parts includes a platform to provide a bearing surface for enabling rotation of the spool with a minimum of friction. The top of the upper shell part includes at least one finger which depends far enough to drag, with predetermined friction, against the top of the spool. This friction is sufficient to prevent a random unwinding of the spool and yet small enough to preclude any substantial impedance to the withdrawal of a desired amount of thread from the spool.

  • Patent number: 4050648
Abstract: A spool of thread, such as dental floss, is housed in a two-part shell or holder, preferably made of plastic, one of the two parts having a central post coaxially located therein. The thread or floss is wound on a bobbin having a clutch molded in its hub area. The clutch comprises a split cylinder having a generally C-shaped cross section with three equally spaced ribs running along the internal length thereof. The C-shape of the split cylinder embraces the central post and the surfaces of the three ribs provided areas for friction gripping the central post. The friction keeps the bobbin from unwinding; however, the friction is not so great that it keeps the thread or floss from pulling smoothly and evenly from the bobbin.

  • Patent number: 4011658
Abstract: A device for inserting dental floss in difficult-to-reach areas under dental bridges or splints, comprising a length of flexible material formed into a loop, the ends of which are bonded together over a substantial portion to provide a stiffened elongated guide portion. The floss is threaded through the loop and the device, with the guide portion leading, is passed under two connected teeth of a bridge through interproximal areas whereby the floss is inserted through such areas.
