Abstract: A method and apparatus for overpressure protection of a catheter from an indwelling catheter. A method in one embodiment includes injecting an agent into the catheter and relieving overpressures in the catheter during the injecting step. The agent is typically a declotting agent and the obstruction is typically a clot (e.g., blood clot). In one embodiment of the apparatus, a catheter includes a cannula and a first hub and a second hub, each of which are coupled to the cannula. The first hub is for receiving an agent which is placed into the cannula to remove an obstruction, and the second hub includes an overpressure relief valve for relieving an overpressure condition in the cannula. Other embodiments of the invention are also described.
Abstract: A method for hydrogen peroxide vapor sterilization of medical devices and similar instruments having long narrow lumens or diffusion restricted areas includes the step of pretreating the article to be sterilized with a dilute solution of hydrogen peroxide prior to exposure to a vacuum or a vacuum followed by plasma. The method is such that, upon vaporization of the solution caused by the vacuum, the hydrogen peroxide remains in contact with the article for a time sufficient to achieve sterilization.

Abstract: Dimeric inhibin concentration can be used in the determination of the risk of a women carrying an unborn child affected by chromosomal abnormalities, e.g. Downs Syndrome. A method for antenatal screening for chromosomal abnormalities is carried out by measuring body fluid taken from a pregnant woman for the level of at least one marker or precursor or metabolite of the marker together with the gestational age of the woman are compared with reference values taken from women carrying fetuses with chromosomal abnormalities and/or women carrying normal fetuses, using dimeric inhibin as a marker. A second marker is the free beta subunit of human chorion gonadotropin. An apparatus for carrying out the method described comprises a computer with a means for comparing the values described.

Abstract: An implant component adapted for bone attachment or replacement is molded from a feed stock which contains a soluble major binder, a backbone binder and structural powder material. After the feed stock is injection molded to form a compact or preform, the major binder is removed from the green article, leaving a structure of interconnected porosity or texture, while the backbone binder remains until the component is sintered. Preferably, the amount of the soluble binder is set to increase the porosity, or reduce the stiffness, of the finished component, thus introducing a biocompatible or growth-enhancing level of porosity or stiffness during the molding process. In further or alternative embodiments, the component may be injection molded onto or about a solvent-leachable spacer preform and/or adjacent to another injected or molded portion of the component which serves as a structural body, frame or shell.
Abstract: The invention provides water swellable wound dressing materials comprising from 5% to 50% of an alginate ester of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 polyhydric alcohol; from 50% to 95% of a humectant consisting of one or more C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 monohydric or polyhydric alcohols; and from 0% to 30% of water, the percentages being calculated by weight based on the weight of the material when anhydrous. The preferred alginate ester is propylene glycol alginate (PGA). The materials swell but do not dissolve in cold or warm water. Insolubility is achieved by the addition of polyvaent cations such as calcium ions, or by covalent cross-linking of the pga, or by adding from 10 to 35% by weight of water-swellable polysaccharide such as gelatin, or by adding from 5% to 20% by weight of a cationic polymer such as chitosan.
Abstract: A method and a support for supporting a package in a steam sterilizer, featuring support members configured and positioned to support only at least a portion of at least two opposed side edges, but not a side face, of the package. A diamond shape is particularly preferred for the support members as, when rotated at an angle, its facets provide line contact with appropriate side edges of the package.

Abstract: A bone allograft applicator device and system is effective to apply a bone graft slurry to an artificial joint without having to remove a previously implanted prosthetic component. In one embodiment, the device includes a hollow member coupled to an actuation mechanism for discharging the bone slurry from the device via a nozzle coupled to a distal end of the hollow member. The device can be used to discharge bone graft slurry from the nozzle and through a screw hole in an acetabular component implanted in the acetabulum of a patient. A bone allograft system can include various components for loading the device with the slurry and/or a plurality of nozzles each having a geometry suited for a particular application.

Abstract: A powder free medical glove having an outer side a silicon treated surface and the inside of cross linked coagulated glove bonded with a layer formed of an anti-blocking composition. The anti-blocking composition includes of a polymer or copolymer mixed together with a micronised high density polyethylene material and wax in suitable blends that result in the composition having anti-blocking and improved lubricity properties. The medical glove with the skin contacting anti-blocking coating enables donning of the glove to be effected without the aid of donning powder such as starch powder. When the finished glove is washed and rinsed with water to remove the coagulant powder, and the said glove treated with a silicon solution, a glove substantially free of loose powder glove is produced and has good lubricity for donning.
Abstract: This invention relates to polymers that are formed by polymerizing a reaction mixture that comprises at least one silicone-containing monomer and at least one hydrophilic monomer. More particularly, this invention relates to polymers formed by polymerizing a reaction mixture that comprises at least one silicone-containing monomer and at least one hydrophilic monomer in the presence of a diluent.
