Patents Assigned to Johnson, Matthey & Co., Limited
  • Patent number: 3969108
Abstract: This invention relates to the recovery of gallium from scrubber dust containing aluminum and fluoride. In carrying out the process of the invention gallium is recovered from a particulate solid of the basic material by means of a process comprising the following steps:A. preparing a mixture of the solid with an excess of an alkali;B. sintering the said mixture;C. leaching the sintered product obtained with an aqueous solution;D. cementation of the gallium present in the resulting squeous solution with a metal more electropositive than gallium; andE. collecting the solid gallium precipitate obtained by cementation.

  • Patent number: 3963827
Abstract: This invention relates to a catalyst suitable for use in the process of a) the reduction of an oxide of nitrogen present in a gas containing nitrogen, and b) for the oxidation of carbon monoxide or one or more organic compounds present in a gas. The catalyst comprises an inert material impregnated or coated with a mixture or alloy comprising 5-75 weight % ruthenium, optionally 0-30 weight % base metal and balance platinum in an amount not less than 5 weight %.

  • Patent number: 3951860
Abstract: This invention relates to a catalyst comprising an inert material impregnated or coated with a mixture or alloy of platinum and rhodium in which rhodium is present in an amount up to 20 wt.%. The catalyst is particularly suitable for use in 1) catalytically reducing an oxide of nitrogen in a gaseous stream, 2) the oxidation of an organic compound in a gas also containing oxygen and 3) the preparation of methane by the steam reforming of naphtha or naphtha distillates.

  • Patent number: 3945948
Abstract: This invention relates to catalysts for use in the control of atmospheric pollution. The catalysts of the present invention are especially useful in the purification of exhaust gases from internal combustion engines and comprise oxidised ruthenium or ruthenium dioxide and a base metal oxide which forms a stable mixed metal oxide with ruthenium dioxide. The base metal may be selected from Groups IV and V of the Periodic Table.

  • Patent number: 3939219
Abstract: The invention described in the specification concerns a process for the homogeneous liquid phase hydrogenation of an olefinically or acetylenically unsaturated organic compound to produce a compound having a lower degree of unsaturation by contact of the said organic compound with molecular hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst solution containing a catalytically effective amount of a cation selected from the group consisting of:M.sup.n.sup.+.sub.2 ; M.sub.2 (OCOR).sup.n.sup.+.sub.4.sup.-n ; M.sub.2 (OCSR).sup.n.sup.+.sub.4.sup.-n and M.sub.2 (SCSR).sup.n.sup.+.sub.4.sup.-nThe said solution being prepared by the addition of strong acid to a solution of a compound selected from the group consisting of:M.sub.2 (OCOR).sub.4 ; M.sub.2 (OCOR).sub.4 L; M.sub.2 (OCOR).sub.4 L.sub.2 ; M.sub.2 (OCSR).sub.4 ; M.sub.2 (OCSR).sub.4 L;M.sub.2 (OCSR).sub.4 L.sub.2 ; M.sub.2 (SCSR).sub.4 ; M.sub.2 (SCSR).sub.4 LandM.sub.2 (SCSR).sub.4 L.sub.
