  • Publication number: 20050188203
Abstract: A method is provided for packaging software which includes a digitally signed data portion and a filename. An entity such as a software distributor provides information which is to be conveyed to the end user with a software package. The information in encoded and then added to the name of the file without altering the digitally signed data portion of the file. In this manner, information is added to the file data portion without breaking the digital signature. The software package thus created is sent to the end user by the retail channel or by downloading to the user's computing device. Once received by the user's computing device, the information is decoded and displayed to the user. The data portion of the file is then installed and executed.

  • Publication number: 20050114120
Abstract: A method and system are provided for compressing information to be sent from a server to a client such as a portable communication device. The server maintains first and second dictionaries for each portable device in the system. The first dictionary is provided to the portable communication device. The server generates more recent second dictionaries as new data comes into the server to be sent to a particular portable device. Communication between the server and a particular portable device is possible over a low cost wire line connection or a more expensive wireless connection. The more recent and accurate second dictionary, together with data compressed using the second dictionary, is sent to the portable device when the portable device is connected to the server by the less expensive wire line connection.

  • Publication number: 20050047557
Abstract: A communication system includes a message server which receives messages addressed to target communication devices coupled to the message server by a communication link. The message server includes a log file which tracks the time that messages intended for various addressed communication devices are received by the message server. The message server includes a log file activity detector which periodically checks the log file to determine if a message addressed to a particular communication device has been received with a predetermined past time period. If a message has been so received and logged, the mail server notifies the target communication device that the message has been delivered to the communication device's mailbox on the message server. The user of the communication device can then opt to retrieve the message.
