Abstract: The invention provides a work transfer in a multi-stage forging apparatus for stepwise forging a work into a refined product.The work transfer has an open-close type chuck which is, with its pair of finger members, suitable for grasping such a work whose diameter at its midportion is smaller than that at its endportions.The work transfer is, in addition to the chuck open-close mechanism, provided with the chuck approach-recede mechanism for a work extract-insert function, which moves the chuck so that the finger members of the chuck may approach to and recede from a front face of a die.The work transfer comprises a single camshaft rotating synchronously with a forging motion, and both the chuck open-close mechanism and the chuck approach-recede mechanism are operated by the single rotation of the camshaft.
