Patent number: 8291597Abstract: A folding knife includes a handle having a blade channel, a blade rotatably coupled to the handle, and annular blade seals coupled to either side of the blade between the blade and inner surfaces of the blade channel. A locking mechanism having first and second control pins coupled to the blade within the circumference of the blade seal so as to extend toward the first handle element. A lock plate is movably coupled to the handle and engages the first and second control pins when the blade is in the open and closed positions, respectively. A release knob coupled to the lock plate allows a user to move the lock plate to release the blade. A seal positioned between the release knob and the handle seals a space between the release knob and the handle.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 2007Date of Patent: October 23, 2012Assignee: Kai U.S.A. Patent number: 6412130Abstract: A multi-tool with a handle formed to have a cross section that is S-shaped so that a foldable tool stored in the handle may be opened and closed independently of other selected operations for the multi-tool. The foldable tool is stored in a first pocket, facing away from an opposing handle, and an adjustment mechanism is stored in a second pocket, facing toward the opposing handle. A leaf spring is cut from an opposing wall of the first pocket, and biased so that the leaf spring moves to a blocking position at least partially within the first pocket when the foldable tool is in an open position. A post is mounted on the foldable tool and is exposed for engagement by a human hand to facilitate deployment of the foldable tool from its closed position to its open position. The S-shaped construction of the handle allows a flange to be incorporated as part of the handle without interfering with the foldability of the foldable tool stored in the first pocket of the handle.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 1999Date of Patent: July 2, 2002Assignee: Kai U.S.A. Patent number: 6397476Abstract: This invention relates to a mechanism in a folding knife that urges the blade to move to an open and alternatively to a closed position. The knife generally consists of a blade having a tang extending outwardly from the blade; a handle having at least one recessed portion; a bar pivotally connecting the tang and the handle; and a bias element engaging the blade wherein the bias element is housed within the recessed portion of the handle. Generally, in the present invention, the blade must be moved manually a certain distance whereupon the mechanism serves to complete the movement of the blade without the application of further outside force by the user.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 2000Date of Patent: June 4, 2002Assignee: Kai U.S.A. Patent number: 6378214Abstract: A folding knife having a blade with a tang, and a handle with an end to which the tang is pivotally connected. The blade is rotatable relative to the handle about a pivot axis between an open position in which the blade is extended away from the handle and a closed position in which the blade is at least partially received within the handle. The folding knife may also include a post slidably held by the blade to slide along at least a portion of the blade between a retracted position and a locking position. When the blade is open and the post is in the locking position, the handle and post block pivoting of the blade from the open position toward the closed position. Additionally, the folding knife may be provided with an oversized tang portion and a spring mechanism that allow the knife blade to be easily pivoted into the open position.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 2000Date of Patent: April 30, 2002Assignee: Kai U.S.A. Patent number: 6145202Abstract: This invention relates to a mechanism in a folding knife that urges the blade to move to an open and alternatively to a closed position. The knife generally cnsists of a blade member having a tang extending outwardly from the blade; a handle having at least one recessed portion; a bar pivotally connecting the tang and the handle; and a bias element engaging the blade wherein the bias element is housed within the recessed portion of the handle. Generally, in the present invention, the blade must be moved manually a certain distance whereupon the mechanism serves to complete the movement of the blade without the application of further outside force by the user.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 1998Date of Patent: November 14, 2000Assignee: Kai U.S.A.
