Patent number: 6312746Abstract: A dual texture pet or animal food product having inner and outer components. The soft inner component contains a mixture of lipid and solid ingredients and has a water activity, aw, less than about 0.65 and a total moisture content less than about 15 wt %. The outer component is a cereal based shell containing at least one ingredient comprising a carbohydrate, fat, protein or combination thereof, the shell component having a total moisture content less than about 20 wt %. The shell component completely surrounds the soft inner component and is formed by the co-extrusion of the soft inner component within the shell component to form one dual component pet or animal food product.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 2001Date of Patent: November 6, 2001Assignee: Kal Kan Foods, Inc.Inventor: Laura Paluch

Patent number: 6254910Abstract: A delivery system for process unstable or sensitive ingredients that consists of a dual texture food product having a first and second component. The first component contains a mixture of lipid and solid ingredients forming a cream-textured matrix that is formed without an aqueous phase and a total moisture content less than about 15 wt %. The first component includes a process unstable or sensitive ingredient. The second component contains at least one ingredient comprising a carbohydrate, fat, protein or combination thereof. The second component has a total moisture content less than about 20 wt %. The second component completely surrounds the cream-textured matrix of the first component thereby maintaining the viability of the process unstable or sensitive ingredient. The food product delivery system is formed by the co-extrusion of the first component within the second component to form one dual component extrudate.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 2000Date of Patent: July 3, 2001Assignee: Kal Kan Foods, Inc.Inventor: Laura Paluch

Patent number: 6207215Abstract: Method for sterilizing foods using both ultra-high pressures and high temperatures. The instantaneous temperature change that occurs when pressure is applied combines a high-temperature short-time process with ultra-high pressure to deliver a fast and therefore gentle thermal process to a pre-packaged product. The process involves heating a food to a pre-pressurized temperature, subjecting the food to ultra-high pressure, which instantaneously raises the temperature of the food, and then releasing the pressure so that the temperature returns to the original pre-pressurized temperature. The method leverages the adiabatic temperature rise which occurs when the food is hydrostatically pressurized, coupled with the lethality of the pressure, to achieve appropriate sterilization conditions. The disclosure also includes foods which have been sterilized using both ultra-high pressures and high temperatures.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 2000Date of Patent: March 27, 2001Assignee: Kal Kan Foods, Inc.Inventors: Michael J. Wilson, Robert Baker

Patent number: 5555705Abstract: A method of filling and sealing a package with a product wherein a container having a bottom generally deformable in shape is filled with a product having a volume less than the container volume but equal to the filled volume. A continuous top lid is placed onto the container and positioned adjacent to a sealing surface and rim section of the container. In this position enough headspace exists to permit the proper lid placement without squeezing product onto the seal surface. The filled container supported on an anvil and lid are then transferred into a vacuum chamber within the vacuum chamber and with a sealing head disposed above the anvil in the raised position, the pressure within the chamber is evacuated by a vacuum. This process lowers the pressure of the headspace gas from the container to that of the chamber. When the desired vacuum level is achieved, the sealing head is lowered and the lid is sealed to the sealing surface of the container.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 1995Date of Patent: September 17, 1996Assignee: Kal Kan Foods, Inc.Inventor: Roy Balcombe

Patent number: 4641605Abstract: An animal litter is described which retards the development of ammonia and markedly reduces human perception of urine and fecal aromas. The animal litter comprises an absorbent granular litter material which is first sprayed with sodium or ammonium persulfate and then dusted with a solid buffering agent to maintain a neutral pH during use by the animal.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 1985Date of Patent: February 10, 1987Assignee: Kal Kan Foods, Inc.Inventor: Charles Gordon
