    Abstract: Process for the optical resolution of racemic mandelic acid which process comprises contacting said racemic mandelic acid with a phenylglycine ester or a phenylglycine ester hydrochloride in a reaction medium, and recovering the D(-)-mandelic acid and L(+)-mandelic acid form; certain D(-) and L(+)-phenylglycine esters and hydrochlorides are provided as novel resolution agents.
