Abstract: There is described a method for checking the authenticity of security documents, in particular banknotes, wherein authentic security documents comprise security features (41-49; 30; 10; 51, 52) printed, applied or otherwise provided on the security documents, which security features comprise characteristic visual features intrinsic to the processes used for producing the security documents. The method comprises the step of digitally processing a sample image of at least one region of interest (R.o.I.) of the surface of a candidate document to be authenticated, which region of interest encompasses at least part of the security features, the digital processing including performing a decomposition of the sample image by means of wavelet transform (WT) of the sample image.

Abstract: There is described an apparatus (1) for coating a cylinder (C), in particular a wiping cylinder of an intaglio printing press, with a plastic composition comprising inter alia heating means (6) for applying radiant heat to the cylinder throughout its length as the cylinder is rotated, the heating means including a plurality of discrete heating elements (60) distributed along the length of the cylinder and around at least part of the peripheral surface of the cylinder, the heating elements being arranged at least in separate columns (60a to 6Oh) disposed parallel to one another along the length of the cylinder. The apparatus further comprises a temperature sensing system (9) for measuring the surface temperature of the cylinder along the length of the cylinder and a processing unit coupled to the temperature sensing system (9) for controlling operation of the heating elements (60) as a function of the measured surface temperature and a desired temperature setting (tc).

Abstract: There is described a method for processing stacks of sheets (SS) into bundles (5) of securities, in particular banknote bundles, the method comprising the steps of cutting successive stacks of sheets (SS), each carrying an array of multiple security prints arranged in a matrix of rows and columns, into successive sets of bundle strips (S; S*), and cutting the successive set of bundle strips (S; S*) into successive sets (2) of consecutive bundles (5) of securities. This method further comprises the step of counting the number of substrates within each bundle strip (S; S*) prior to cutting thereof into the successive sets (2) of consecutive bundles (5).
Abstract: The printing machine comprises at least one transfer system for conveying a substrate onto an impression cylinder and at least one screen of cylindrical or flat shape, with a doctor blade, said screen collaborating with the impression cylinder and intended to print the substrate with an ink containing pigments that can be orientated by a magnetic field and an unloading system for carrying the substrate away. The impression cylinder comprises at least one magnetic element on its impression surface, said magnetic element being positioned at a point corresponding to said impression performed by said screen on said substrate.
Abstract: The invention relates to a sheet guide element for use in an apparatus for transporting sheets by means of a gripper system having at least two grippers spaced apart from each other and a sheet guide surface defined by the sheet guide element. Here, the sheet guide element is provided with depressions in the sheet guide surface, running parallel to the transport direction, at least in some sections, in order at least partially to accommodate the grippers, so that the sheet guide surface described by the sheet guide element in the transport direction runs, at least in some sections, at the same height as the movement path of the sheet leading edge fixed in the gripper system.
Abstract: The process for treating stacks formed of a predetermined number of planar substrates, such as securities, banknotes, checks and other similar documents, said securities being formed by prints on said substrates arranged in matrix-form in lines and columns, comprises the steps of (a) displacing the stack under a cutting device; (b) cutting a strip of the stack with cutting means; (c) evacuating the cut strip for liberating the front side of the stack which is under the cutting means; (d) taking an image of the front side of the stack; (e) counting the number of substrate in the stack by analyzing the image taken; (f) resuming the process at step (a) until all strips of a stack have been cut and starting with another stack.

Abstract: There is described method of processing printed sheets (100), especially sheets of printed securities, into individual documents (150), such as banknotes, each printed sheet (100) comprising an array of imprints arranged in a matrix of rows and columns.
Abstract: There is described a sheet inspection system for a sheet-fed recto-verso printing press of the type comprising two printing cylinders (10, 20) for carrying out simultaneous recto-verso printing of the sheets, said sheet inspection system comprising at least one inspection device (200; 300; 400) for taking an image of one side of the printed sheets. The sheet inspection system comprises first and second transfer cylinders (60, 65) interposed between a first (10) of the two printing cylinders (10, 20) and a chain gripper system (5) of the printing press, printed sheets being transferred successively from the first printing cylinder (10) to the first transfer cylinder (60), to the second transfer cylinder (65), and to the chain gripper system (5).

Abstract: The invention relates to a device and to a method for providing and adjusting a numbering machine with which value papers or sheets of value papers are printed with an individual piece of information, particularly a serial number. The numbering machine comprises carrier discs and numbering units on said carrier discs, wherein a plurality of numbering units are fixed on a carrier disc and a plurality of said carrier discs are fixed on a shaft, and the shaft is driven by at least one drive element with at least one rotary encoder. According to the invention, a position device provides the target position of the carrier discs and the associated numbering units on the associated carrier discs. Such a position device is preferably a light generating device with a light beam, a mechanical stop collar, or a camera with a monitor with a reticle.
Abstract: There is described a method for varnishing security documents, especially intaglio-printed security documents such as banknotes, wherein both sides of the security documents are covered by a protective varnish. The method comprises the step of applying a thicker layer of protective varnish on a side of the security documents which exhibits a greater surface roughness, especially the side which is opposite to the side of the security documents which was last printed by intaglio printing. Also described in a varnishing machine for carrying out the above method.
