Abstract: Decking comprises: a support selected from the group consisting of: polymeric materials; marine engineering polymers, fiber reinforced polymers, polymer metal composites, metal or wood sheets or marine superstructure; an array of strips of polymer treated wood secured to the support by means of an adhesive; the adhesive being selected from the group consisting of: polyurethane adhesives, modified silyl polymer adhesives and epoxy resin adhesives; wherein the polymer treated wood comprises a wood species selected from the group consisting of: maple species impregnated with a wood compatible polymerizable monomer, preferably selected from furfuryl alcohol, bis hydroxymethyl furan and mixtures thereof and subsequently dried and cured.

Abstract: Furfurylated wood produced in a two-chamber system in which monomer/oligomer impregnation in an impregnation chamber is followed by successive stages of drying and curing. Physical properties of wood under treatment are measured, recorded and referenced into a database that accumulates wood species data relating to applied temperature and pressure profiles, physical properties and appearance of intermediate and finished samples of wood and also chemical treatment regimes, including soak time and monomer/oligomer concentrations. During drying and curing, monitoring of process parameters, including water removal and/or atmospheric conditions, are used by a controller both to control and determine a state of process completion by comparing recorded data with historically accumulated data or process set point conditions.

Abstract: A furan polymer impregnated wood which comprises wood impregnated with a polymerizable furfuryl alcohol monomer mixture containing at least water and furfuryl alcohol, and an initiator selected from the group consisting of anhydrides, acids and combinations thereof is described. For longer storage life, the mixture contains a stabilizer selected from sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium citrate, phosphates and water-soluble lignin derivatives such as calcium and ammonium salts of lignosulfonic acids, and combinations thereof. A method for preparing a furan impregnated wood and uses thereof is also described.
Abstract: A method of curing impregnated wood, comprising the steps of impregnating a wood sample with a polymerizable liquid, subjecting the wood sample to at least one heating iteration, wherein the wood is heated to between 70 to 140 degrees C. by MW radiation such that the formation of polymers takes place in the wood cells.
