Patent number: 5585708Abstract: A motor control apparatus and method is disclosed for controlling a multiphase AC motor by controlling electrical quantities such as voltage or current applied to the stator of the motor. The apparatus includes a motor command unit for defining a reference signal indicative of a desired motor parameter such as torque, speed, or position, a DC voltage link, a controller, a line-side converter including active switches in a bridge configuration for controlling the bidirectional flow of electrical power between the DC voltage link and a source of AC power, and a motor-side converter including active switches in a bridge configuration for controlling stator electrical quantities by controlling the bidirectional flow of electrical power between the DC voltage link and the motor, where the motor-side converter includes control means responsive to the reference signal for controlling the active switches to produce stator electrical quantities that correspond to the reference signal.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1995Date of Patent: December 17, 1996Assignee: Kenetech Windpower, Inc.Inventors: Robert D. Patent number: 5579217Abstract: A laminated bus assembly including a high power coupler to provide a low impedance, low noise laminated bus assembly for a switched converter that includes a plurality of switch pairs to convert between an AC power line and a DC device. The laminated bus assembly includes a first conductive layer, a second conductive layer, and a third conductive layer. A dielectric layer is laminated between each of the first, second, and third planes. The high power coupler includes a bushing positioned within the laminated assembly, including an engageable section for engaging with one of the conductive layers. A passage hole including an insulator ring is formed in intermediate conductive planes for passage of the bushing. A circuit layout includes a plurality of electrical connections between the switches, the AC, -DC and +DC bar conductors, and the DC device.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 1994Date of Patent: November 26, 1996Assignee: Kenetech Windpower, Inc.Inventors: David Deam, William L. Patent number: 5526252Abstract: A utility feedback filter for a self-commutated, pulse-width modulated power electronic converter. A feedback node is coupled to detect the utility current which is then utilized in a feedback loop through a feedback circuit. The feedback processed utility current is summed with the requested utility current, and the difference is used to generate a pulse-width modulation pattern. The damping factor can be adjusted by the feedback circuit, which preferably has a transfer function of K.sub.f +K.sub.d, where K.sub.f is a proportional feedback gain and K.sub.d is a derivative feedback gain. Utilization of the actual utility current provides precise control of the current supplied to the utility, which substantially reduces or even eliminates the high frequency harmonic components. Furthermore, by proper choice of the components in the feedback circuit, the resistive value of a damping resistor can be decreased, thereby reducing wasteful dissipation of power.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 1994Date of Patent: June 11, 1996Assignee: Kenetech Windpower, Inc.Inventor: William L. Patent number: 5369353Abstract: A controlled electrical energy storage apparatus for selectively storing electrical energy from an electrical grid, and selectively releasing the electric energy back into the grid. The apparatus includes a converter coupled to the grid, and a DC energy storage device coupled to the converter. The converter includes a switching circuit having a plurality of high speed electrical switches arranged in pairs. Each switch pair is coupled between one of the phase lines of the AC utility grid and the DC energy storage device. The power flow control unit supplies a power flow control waveform to the switch pairs. The power flow control waveform includes a real waveform for control of real power and an imaginary waveform for control of reactive power independently of the real power. By pulse-width modulating the switches at a high frequency, the converter controls instantaneous currents flowing through each of the phase lines for precise control of the real and reactive power.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 1992Date of Patent: November 29, 1994Assignee: KENETECH Windpower, Inc.Inventor: William L. Patent number: 5365424Abstract: A low impedance, low noise laminated bus assembly for a high power switched converter that has a plurality of switch pairs including a -DC switch and a +DC switch for high speed switching to convert between an AC power line and a DC power storage device such as capacitors. The laminated bus assembly includes a first conductor plane having a plurality of AC bar conductors for each phase of AC power, a second conductor plane including a -DC bar conductor, and a third conductor plane including a +DC bar conductor. A dielectric layer is laminated between the first, second, and third planes. The circuit layout includes a plurality of electrical connections between the switches, the AC, -DC and +DC bar conductors, and the DC power storage device. Some of the electrical connections require that a coupling conductor pass through another bar conductor, which must therefore be insulated from the coupling conductor.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1992Date of Patent: November 15, 1994Assignee: Kenetech Windpower, Inc.Inventors: David Deam, William L.
