    Abstract: The dual-zeolite catalyst for production of ethylbenzene is formed by mixing at least two different zeolites selected from mordenite, beta, ZSM-5, ZSM-11, ZSM-12, ZSM-22, ZSM-23, MFI topology zeolite, NES topology zeolite, EU-1, SAPO-5, SAPO-34, SAPO-11 and MAPO-36 zeolites and an inactive alumina binder. The two zeolites have different topology and possess dissimilar and unique physical and chemical characteristics, including particle size, surface area, pore size and acidity. The preferred amount of the two zeolites may range from 10 to 90 wt % of the total catalyst amount in the final dried and calcined form, preferably the zeolites are in equal parts by weight.

    Abstract: The apparatus and method for blind block recursive estimation in adaptive networks, such as a wireless sensor networks, uses recursive algorithms based on Cholesky factorization (Cholesky) or singular value decomposition (SVD). The algorithms are used to estimate an unknown vector of interest (such as temperature, sound, pressure, motion, pollution, etc.) using cooperation between neighboring sensor nodes in the wireless sensor network. The method incorporates the Cholesky and SVD algorithms into the wireless sensor networks by creating new recursive diffusion-based algorithms, specifically Diffusion Blind Block Recursive Cholesky (DBBRC) and Diffusion Blind Block Recursive SVD (DBBRS). Both DBBRC and DBBRS perform much better than the no cooperation case where the individual sensor nodes do not cooperate. A choice of DBBRC or DBBRS represents a tradeoff between computational complexity and performance.

    Abstract: The selective filtering earplugs allow a user to filter most external and environmental sounds, only allowing a set of pre-approved sounds to be heard by the user. The earplugs include a sound acquisition module and at least one filtering earplug. The sound acquisition module includes a microphone for receiving environmental sounds and a controller for converting the received environmental sounds to a digital signal. First memory is provided for storing the digital signal and second memory is provided for storing a database of pre-approved sound signals. The controller compares the digital signal with the database of pre-authorized sound signals. If the digital signal matches a pre-authorized sound signal of the database, then a transmitter transmits the digital signal. The filtering earplug includes a receiver for receiving the digital signal and a converter for converting the digital signal into an audio signal.

    Abstract: The method of performing fingerprint matching includes a matching algorithm that combines affine moment invariants (AMIs) and translation, rotation and scaling invariants (TRS) based on moments analysis without requiring minutiae detection. Preprocessing normalizes the fingerprint image using the Federal Bureau of Investigation's wavelet scalar quantification (WSQ) compression standard definition. Analysis of the orientation field reliably and accurately determines the reference point. The area within a predetermined range around the detected reference point is used as a region of interest (ROI) for feature extraction. A directional filter bank transform (DFB) obtains directional components of the image. An invariant moment analysis on sub-bands of the filtered images extracts features while limiting the effects of noise and non-linear distortions. Absolute distance is used to match the fingerprints.

The immovable and movable Helmholtz resonators are acoustically coupled together to adjustably filter two resonant frequencies in the flow path channel with a feedback control system that adjusts the position of the movable Helmholtz resonator in response to the differences in pre-filtered noise versus filtered noise.

    Abstract: The stair-climbing apparatus has a series of articulating wheel sets extending below the platform. All of the wheel sets are vertically adjustable to negotiate stairways and similar changes of elevation. The lead wheel set is fixed longitudinally relative to the platform, while following wheel sets are longitudinally adjustable to adjust for the pitch or slope of different stairways. The apparatus uses sensors (e.g., mechanical, infrared, ultrasonic, etc.) to detect the presence of the stair risers and their height, control of the assembly being accomplished by a control circuit on board the machine. The wheel sets are raised and lowered independently of one another by pantograph mechanisms extending between the platform and the wheel sets. The horizontally adjustable wheel sets are positioned by a longitudinally disposed rack on the platform.

    Abstract: The system for unclogging toilets is a pressurized air-based unclogging system for toilets, allowing clogs formed on either side of a bend in a toilet outflow pipe to be cleared simultaneously. The system includes a tube mounted on a toilet so that a pair of peripheral apertures and a central aperture formed through a lower end thereof communicate with an interior of the bend of the pipe. A plunger is slidably mounted within an interior of the tube, and has an expandable bladder mounted thereto. An air pump delivers pressurized air to the interior of the tube through a port formed through an upper end thereof so that the plunger is driven downward while simultaneously filling the expandable bladder, which projects through the central aperture. The expandable bladder creates a barrier within the bend and pressurized air flowing through the peripheral apertures is delivered to either side of the bend.

    Abstract: The method for elliptic curve scalar multiplication may provide several countermeasures to protect scalar multiplication of a private key k by a point P to produce the product kP from power analysis attacks. First, the private key, k, is partitioned into a plurality of key partitions, which are processed in a random order, the resulting points being accumulated to produce the scalar product kP. Second, in each partition, the encoding is randomly selected to occur in binary form or in Non-Adjacent Form (NAF), with the direction of bit inspection being randomly assigned between most-to-least and least-to-most. Third, in each partition, each zero in the key may randomly perform a dummy point addition operation in addition to the doubling operation. The method may be implemented in software, smart cards, circuits, processors, or application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) designed to carry out the method.

The two zeolites have different physical and chemical characteristics, such as pore size and acidity. An exemplary catalyst includes mordenite, ZSM-5, and 3 wt % molybdenum. The multiple zeolite catalyst may further be used to convert toluene to mixed xylene isomers, particularly with a ZSM-5:mordenite ratio of 2:1 by weight.

    Abstract: The bolt tension monitoring system provides remote monitoring of the tension of a bolt, thus allowing for remote monitoring of general structural health and integrity of the fastener. The bolt tension monitoring system includes a housing adapted for being retained on a head of a bolt to be monitored. The system further includes a force transducer positioned between the head of the bolt and a surface in which the bolt is fastened and measures tension between the head of the bolt and the workpiece surface. A controller circuit within the housing calculates the difference between currently measured tension between the head of the bolt and the workpiece surface and an initially measured tension. A wireless transponder mounted in the housing transmits an alert signal if the calculated difference exceeds a pre-defined threshold value.

    Abstract: The system for controlling vehicle ignition provides three separate levels of access to prevent unauthorized users from actuating ignition of a vehicle. The system includes a radio frequency identification tag having permanent computer readable memory and volatile computer readable memory associated therewith. The radio frequency identification tag is preferably embedded within a vehicle key. A predetermined permanently assigned authentication code is stored in the permanent computer readable memory and a variable time stamp is stored in the volatile computer readable memory. The permanently assigned authentication code and the variable time stamp are transmitted upon activation of the radio frequency identification tag. Vehicle ignition occurs only upon the mechanical operation of the key in a conventional ignition switch and matching of both the permanently assigned authentication code and the variable time stamp with codes and stamps stored in vehicle memory.
