Patent number: 5702486Abstract: The invention is directed to a modular humeral prosthesis for implantation into a humerus of a patient. The prosthesis includes a proximal humeral component having a platform disposed on an upper end. A tapered projection is disposed on the platform. A cup-shaped fracture cap having a tapered opening with generally the same shape as the tapered projection is removably disposable on the tapered projection. The fracture cap is shaped so as to allow for space between the cap and the glenold of a patient into whom the prosthesis is to be implanted and thereby allow the bones of the patient's humeral head to be reconstructed by reassembling and securing the bone fragments about the fracture cap. The prosthesis further includes a humeral head having a tapered opening which may be disposed on the proximal humeral component. The humeral head is interchangeable with the fracture cap.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 1996Date of Patent: December 30, 1997Assignee: Kirschner Medical CorporationInventors: Edward Vincent Craig, Richard Frank Kyle, Christopher Bryan Straight

Patent number: 5470306Abstract: A medical bandaging article sealed in moisture-free condition, serially connected with other such sealed articles in roll form. The medical bandaging article comprises an open cell foam layer and a woven fabric layer with several layers of resin impregnated substrates arranged therebetween. The substrate layers are preferably smaller than the fabric and foam layers. A heat fusing web is interposed between the fabric layer and the immediately adjacent substrate layer, and extends beyond the substrates so that upon application of sufficient heat and pressure, the fabric layer and the foam layer are fused together around the periphery of the substrates encasing them between the fabric layer and foam layer. A roll of individually sealed pouches containing bandaging articles are connected together, and between adjoining sealed pouches special perforations are provided for separating the pouches without damaging the seals of the adjacent pouches.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 1994Date of Patent: November 28, 1995Assignee: Kirschner Medical CorporationInventor: Walter D. Patent number: 5234433Abstract: A method and instruments for replacing the articulating surfaces of a knee joint in which the diseased area is restricted to one of the medial and lateral compartments. A femoral intramedullary rod is placed down the center of the femur. A femoral cutting block is affixed at one side to the rod and at the other side to an outrigger attached to the femur by smooth pins. The cutting block is adjustable rotationally and in the anterior-posterior plane. The cutting block is provided with surgical saw guide slots for the posterior and distal articular surface cuts and the chamfer cuts, all of which are made with the cutting block in place. The cutting block is removed and a drill guide is used for drilling two holes in the distal articular cut surface for receipt of the mounting pegs of the femoral unicompartmental prosthetic implant.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1991Date of Patent: August 10, 1993Assignee: Kirschner Medical CorporationInventors: Jack M. Bert, Richard W. Woods

Patent number: 5010881Abstract: An improved ambulatory halo device to be worn by a patient for rigid immobilization of the cervical spine has a vest for positionally fixed attachment to the upper torso of the patient, an adjustable framework attached to the vest extending upwardly to adjacent the skull of the patient, and a halo member having a plurality of skull pins adjustably supported on the upper portion of the framework for closely surrounding the skull of the patient. The skull pins are positioned to engage the skull of the patient around the skull above the eyes to rigidly fix the position of the skull and maintain traction on and rigidly fix the position of the cervical spine.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 1990Date of Patent: April 30, 1991Assignee: Kirschner Medical CorporationInventors: Michael P. Patent number: 4994945Abstract: A lamp for providing uniform luminosity in an area to be illuminated, such as in an operating theatre and the like. The lamp comprises a light source, an infrared filter element, a planar prism field, having a substantial number of radial sectors containing a plurality of transverse, outwardly curved prisms, and a toroidal lens system which controls the divergence of the light emanating from the light source so as to render the light substantially columnate and to direct the light onto the planar prism field, a transparent member beneath the planar prism field to protect the planar prism field from dirt, foreign material and scratches, and a handle extending downwardly from the face of the lamp by which the lamp can be manipulated. The radial sectors are held together in the planar prism field by attachment to one another. As a result, the transparent member can be thin since it is not required to support the planar prism field.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1989Date of Patent: February 19, 1991Assignee: Kirschner Medical CorporationInventors: Donald C. Patent number: 4937715Abstract: The present invention relates to a lamp for providing uniform luminosity in an area to be illuminated, such as in an operating theatre and the like, comprising generally (a) a light source, (b) a planar field, said planar field comprising a substantial number of radial sectors containing a plurality of transverse, outwardly curved prisms, and (c) a toroidal lens system which controls the divergence of the light emanating from the light source so as to render the light substantially columnate and direct the light onto the planar field. The present invention also includes structure whereby the radial sectors are held together in the planar field by attachment to one another, such as by tongue-and-groove means, and further includes (d) a transparent member located between the planar field and the area to be illuminated which protects the prism sectors from soil and injury.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 1989Date of Patent: June 26, 1990Assignee: Kirschner Medical CorporationInventors: Donald C. Patent number: 4937146Abstract: A water curable resin-coated sheet useful as an orthopedic cast having a non-polar hydrophobic lubricant admixed with a resin prepolymer in the coating in order to provide low surface tack. A method of preparation involves mixing the lubricant and resin prepolymer briefly to form an unstable mixture and immediately applying the mixture to a substrate sheet of fiberglass or the like, the lubricant being present in an amount in excess of that which is miscible with the resin prepolymer.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 1988Date of Patent: June 26, 1990Assignee: Kirschner Medical CorporationInventors: Ronald M. Dull, Lawrence B. Smith, Harold E. Garey

Patent number: 4683878Abstract: The present invention comprises an elongated bone fixation plate with a center portion which bridges the fracture site. The central portion has a square cross-sectional shape. Two oppositely directed end portions extend axially from the central portion. The central portion has a width which is substantially less than the width of the end portions of the bone fixation plate. The end portions of the bone fixation plate have a plurality of elongated holes and each end portion tapers in thickness from adjacent the central portion to the outer terminating ends of the fixation plate. The plurality of holes are elongated in nature with each hole having a vertical distal wall and an inclined proximal end wall sloping toward the vertical distal wall. Each end portion has a uniform width and the entire bottom surface of each end portion may be concave in shape so as to provide a complementary mating surface with the fractured bone.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 1985Date of Patent: August 4, 1987Assignee: Kirschner Medical CorporationInventor: Dennis R.
