    Abstract: A direct current brushless electric motor has a rotor, and a stator with inwardly extending teeth, between each pair of which a winding slot is defined. The radially inward face of each tooth has a dummy slot shaped so the reluctance forces between rotor and stator due to the presence of the dummy slots are the same as those due to the winding slots. Motor control arrangement incorporates a current feedback loop based on the incoming phase of each phase combination in the phase energization sequence in a driving mode and phase changeover may be initiated by Hall devices, two for each transition point, underlying the axial ends of the rotor magnets. The control arrangement may incorporate a pulse width modulation power supply permitting the establishment of bias currents under motor standstill conditions.

    Abstract: In a sensor having a drive winding for establishing a forward field, an electrically conductive screen is displaceable relative to a sense winding. In the presence of the drive field, eddy currents are generated in the screen to establish a counter-field opposing the forward field, so that the sense winding is shaded by the screen to a varying extent during relative displacement of screen and sense winding and the voltage induced in the sense winding is accordingly correspondingly varied. Application of a high frequency input to the drive winding results in a modulated output from the sense winding which may be demodulated to provide a signal indicative of screen position relative to sense winding. The position signal may be further processed to provide a speed signal. The sensor may assume a multiplicity of linear or planar, rotational and axial or solenoidal configurations.

    Abstract: An article comprised of a body having a conductor pattern on at least one non-planar and non-flexible surface thereof. The article is prepared by using a three-dimensional mask having an interior surface which is a mirror image replica of the surface of the body on which the conductors are to be formed. The surface of the body is provided with material which is capable of initiating conductor formation. The interior surface of the mask then is placed over the body and in substantial registry therewith. The mask and the body then are exposed to radiation or moving material to delineate the conductor pattern. Subsequently, the mask is removed and conductors are formed.

One half of the pole faces have a nonuniform airgap while the other half have a uniform air gap and cover a noninteger slot distance. The armature has an odd number of slots. Instead of the usual ripple component at the slot frequency, a dynamo constructed as described above, surprisingly, has a predominant ripple component at twice the slot frequency.

    Abstract: In making coaxial interconnection boards according to this invention coaxial conductors are scribed onto a circuit board substrate. The coaxial conductors are preformed and affixed in a predetermined pattern on the substrate using an adhesive. A conductive layer forming a ground plane covers the surface of the substrate interconnecting the shields of the coaxial conductors. The conductive material other than the coaxial signal conductors is eliminated around the termination points of the coaxial conductors thereby creating clearance areas. The clearance areas permit connection of the signal conductors to surface terminal pads without shorting to the shield conductors or ground planes.

The controller utilizes a pseudo-derivative feedback (PDF) type control wherein dynamic adjustment is achieved by adjusting only a single variable. The variable can be controlled as a function of the derivation of motor speed divided by motor current for adaptive control with changing inertia. Control may also be achieved as a function of motor speed divided by the integral of motor current over the same interval. In a digital implementation the integral of motor current the time required for a predetermined speed change provides effective control.

    Abstract: In an optical shaft encoder for converting rotary motion to an electrical signal, a shaft is rotatably mounted in a base and has a code disk attached thereto. A light source and photodetector are disposed on opposite sides of the code disk. The photodetector is covered by a mask which is attached thereto. The photodetector/mask assembly is loosely inserted into a printed circuit board and a spacer is placed between the code disk and the photodetector/mask assembly to achieve a predetermined air gap. The photodetector/mask assembly is then radially aligned with the code disk. After proper placement, the photodetector/mask assembly is soldered in place and the spacer is removed. This technique allows the optical shaft encoder to be manufactured to precise tolerances without the necessity of precision machining.

    Abstract: In a multi-color printing process, measurements of the optical density of two different three-color halftone control areas are used to calculate dot gain and solid density of the cyan, magenta and yellow images. Since no single-color solid control targets are used, control targets may be hidden or camouflaged in a border or logo in the final printed product. The two control targets can consist of light and dark near-neutral gray balance targets. Alternatively, two different three-color halftone regions of the printed image can be used as control areas, eliminating the need for separate control targets. Densitometers having blue, green and red filters use the two three-color halftone control areas to provide density measurements which are used by a computer to calculate the densities of cyan, magenta, and yellow halftone images. The computer then calculates the dot gain and solid density of the process inks, which are displayed to a pressman who can make appropriate adjustments to the printing process.
