  • Patent number: 5429227
Abstract: A chain conveyor for the transport of mass flows of cigarettes or other rod-shaped commodities has a series of identical links which are articulately connected to each other by alternating vertical and horizontal chain pins. The upper portions of the vertical pins carry platforms having supporting surfaces for the commodities, and each vertical pin further carries roller followers serving to track vertically spaced-apart portions of a guide surface which can have one or more non-linear portions, such as convex portions. The leading and trailing portions of successive platforms are interdigitated in such a way that the supporting surfaces of neighboring platforms can be inclined relative to each other as well as that the supporting surfaces of neighboring platforms can turn relative to each other about the axes of the respective vertical pins. Portions of the horizontal pins can extend into a channel between the vertically spaced-apart portions of the guide surface.

  • Patent number: 5413213
Abstract: An apparatus for transporting a mass flow of rod-shaped articles of the tobacco processing industry from a first station to a remote second station has two coaxial upright helical tracks one of which extends from the first station and the other of which extends from and is at least close to the second station. One or more endless chain or belt conveyors are provided to advance the articles of the mass flow along an elongated path which is defined in part by the first and in part by the second track. The apparatus can be used as a variable-capacity first-in first-out reservoir for rod-shaped articles due to the provision of one or two bridges. If the apparatus employs a single bridge and first and second conveyors, the bridge carries a first conveying device which receives articles from the first conveyor serving to accept articles at the first station, and a second conveying device which receives articles from the first conveying device and transfers the thus received articles onto the second conveyor.

  • Patent number: 5406376
Abstract: Apparatus for testing the end portions of cigarettes to detect end portions containing insufficient quantities of tobacco has a conveyor which transports the cigarettes sideways past at least two testing stations each of which accommodates a discrete capacitive and/or photoelectronic testing unit. Repeated monitoring of the end portions of successive cigarettes reduces the likelihood that unsatisfactory cigarettes, particularly cigarettes with end portions which are empty or contain insufficient quantities of tobacco particles, would reach the consumers. Signals which are generated by the testing units can be used to segregate cigarettes having defective end portions.

  • Patent number: 5385622
Abstract: The leader of a fresh flexible web of paper or the like is spliced to the trailing end of an expiring web by a row of uniting bands having coats of adhesive at both sides. Successive uniting bands of the row are peeled off a flexible carrier strip while being attached to one side of the leader. The expiring web is thereupon arrested and its trailing end is pressed against the uniting bands which already adhere to the leader of the fresh web. The peeling of uniting bands off the carrier strip takes place between a supply reel which stores convolutions of the carrier strip with a file of uniting bands on it, and a takeup reel for that portion of the carrier strip has been relieved of uniting bands. The number of uniting bands in a row depends upon the width of the fresh web and/or the expiring web. A carriage is movable back and forth transversely of the leader of the fresh web and carries an idler roller serving to peel a selected number of uniting bands off the carrier strip between the two reels.

  • Patent number: 5369985
Abstract: A sealing element for use in the testing of cigarettes or other rod-shaped articles of the tobacco processing industry has an elastic tubular body with an end portion having an axially movable end wall and an annular lip extending beyond the external surface of the end wall. The latter has a central opening constituting the inlet or the outlet of an axial passage for testing fluid. When the end of an article to be tested is caused to bear against the external surface of the end wall, the latter yields axially of the tubular body and causes the lip to flex radially inwardly into engagement with the periphery of the adjacent end of the article to be tested. In order to reduce the likelihood of damage to the end wall and/or the lip by sharp edges surrounding the ends of certain articles which are caused to bear against the external surface of the end wall, such external surface is provided with an annular recess which is inwardly adjacent the lip and can have a substantially semicircular cross-sectional outline.

  • Patent number: 5369986
Abstract: A sealing element for the end portions of cigarettes or other rod-shaped articles of the tobacco processing industry has an elastic tubular body defining a longitudinally extending passage for the flow of air or another testing fluid from one end of an article being tested or in the opposite direction. The end face of the article being tested is engaged by a deformable membrane at one end of the passage, and such membrane has a central opening for the flow of testing fluid from or into an enlarged chamber between the membrane and an internal fluid deflecting baffle of the tubular body. The baffle causes the testing fluid to flow in the chamber radially inwardly toward or radially outwardly from the opening in the membrane and thus prevents the accumulation of tobacco particles and/or particles of filter material for tobacco smoke in the chamber. The stream of testing fluid in the major portion of the passage flows in the axial direction of the article being tested.

  • Patent number: 5361783
Abstract: A cigarette maker or a filter rod making machine wherein a continuous rod-like filler is advanced by an endless foraminous belt conveyor toward a wrapping or draping unit and a web of wrapping material is advanced toward the unit to be draped around the filler. In order to ensure that the leader of a fresh web properly enters the wrapping station, the path for the web is monitored and the belt conveyor for the filler is moved toward the path of the web when a monitoring device detects the leader. If the cigarette maker or the filter rod making machine is designed to simultaneously produce and drape two or more discrete fillers, the paths of the webs are monitored independently of each other and portions of the respective belts are moved toward the oncoming leaders of the webs whenever the respective monitoring devices signal the arrival of leaders in preselected portions of the paths.

  • Patent number: 5325874
Abstract: A tobacco stream which contains a surplus of tobacco particles is conveyed in a channel past a trimming device which serves to remove the surplus and has two disc-shaped tobacco engaging members extending through openings in the sidewalls of the channel and into the stream in such a way that the surplus is located at one side and the remainder of the stream is located at the other side of the plane of the tobacco engaging members. These members are rotated in opposite directions, and their marginal portions come nearest to each other at a point normally midway between the sidewalls. A rotating tube is disposed at the one side of the tobacco engaging members and has a serrated or smooth cutting edge which removes the surplus only, or practically only, at the aforementioned point. Such surplus is evacuated by suction through the tube whose axis makes an oblique angle with the direction of advancement of the stream in the channel.

  • Patent number: 5302907
Abstract: The resonance frequency and/or damping of a high-frequency oscillator which contains a variable impedance (such as a capacitor in a moisture detector for coffee or tobacco) is ascertained by generating first signals which denote the envelope curves of oscillations during intervals between successive excitations of the oscillator. Pairs of second signals denoting predetermined portions of envelope curves are transmitted to a dividing circuit, and the quotients of such pairs of second signals are indicative of the damping. Resonance frequency is ascertained by counting the number of oscillations per interval. Oscillations of the oscillator can be rectified prior to the generation of first signals.

  • Patent number: 5301011
Abstract: The diameters of rod-shaped articles of the tobacco processing industry are ascertained while the articles are transported past a measuring station in the flutes of a drum-shaped conveyor moving along a range finder which measures the distance of each article of a series of articles from a reference point and transmits appropriate signals to an evaluating circuit wherein the diameters of successive articles are determined on the basis of comparison with a fixed reference distance of the bottoms of the flutes from the reference point. The beam of radiation which is emitted by the radiation source of the range finder is reflected by successive articles, and the intensity of reflected radiation is used to generate second signals which are processed into signals denoting a second diameter of each article. A third diameter of each article can be ascertained downstream of the range finder by an optoelectronic detector.

  • Patent number: 5267576
Abstract: A cigarette rod making machine wherein the flow of loosely intermingled tobacco shreds, tobacco ribs and foreign objects (such as nuts, bolts, pieces of wire and/or particles of plastic material) is classified to segregate the ribs and foreign objects from the shreds. The ribs are thereupon separated from foreign objects in a sifter and are comminuted in a rotary cutter prior to being readmitted into the flow downstream of the classifying location(s). Successive increments of the flow are converted into successive increments of a stream which carries a surplus of shreds and is trimmed for conversion into a filler which is ready to be wrapped into cigarette paper. The comminuted ribs are admitted into the flow at a location such that they are confined in the central portion of the filler.

  • Patent number: 5259401
Abstract: A running web or discrete tubular wrappers of rod-shaped articles of the tobacco processing industry are perforated with a variable-intensity high-energy pulsed laser beam which is controlled in such a way that the intensity of radiation and/or the length of pulses is altered in response to variations in the speed of advancement of the web or discrete wrappers past the perforating station. This ensures that the permeability of the thus obtained ventilation zones is not influenced by the speed of advancement of the material to be perforated past the perforating station. The intensity of radiation and/or the length of pulses can also be influenced by one or more monitored characteristics of the articles, such as the permeability of their wrappers.

  • Patent number: 5248375
Abstract: Two parallel webs of wrapping material are advanced toward the inlet of a wrapping mechanism in a twin cigarette rod making, filter rod making or like machine adjacent a paster with two wheel-shaped rotary applicators which apply strips of adhesive to selected marginal portions of the respective webs. The applicators receive adhesive from discrete rotary adhesive supplying members which, in turn, receive adhesive from a tandem pump. The applicators are installed at a level below the wrapping mechanism to reduce the likelihood of contamination of such mechanism by sprays or droplets of adhesive. The webs are draped around discrete tobacco-containing or filter material-containing rods, and the adhesive-coated marginal portions of the webs are folded over the other marginal portions to form seams which extend in parallelism with the axes of the resulting cigarette rods or filter rods.

  • Patent number: 5234397
Abstract: A continuous tow of filamentary filter material is advanced past a rotary applicator which delivers metered but variable quantities of a second filter material (such as granulated or pulverulent charcoal) into successive increments of the tow. The tow and the delivered second filter material are thereupon draped into a web of wrapping material to form a filter rod which is sub-divided into sections of desired length. The density and/or the mass of the filter rod or of successive filter rod sections is monitored and the results of such monitoring operation are utilized to regulate the rate of delivery of second filter material so that the mass or density of the rod remains constant. The draw resistance of the filter rod or of filter rod sections can be monitored to generate signals which are used to regulate the rate of advancement of the tow toward the draping station and to thus maintain the draw resistance at least substantially constant.

  • Patent number: 5230353
Abstract: Two tobacco streams are made simultaneously by feeding a main flow of tobacco particles upwardly through a suction duct which terminates beneath two parallel foraminous belt conveyors. The sidewalls of the duct have alternating wedge-like ramps which divide the ascending main flow into plural first and second flows in such a way that the first flows advance from one of the sidewalls toward the other sidewall and the second flows advance from the other sidewall toward the one sidewall. In addition, the sidewalls and their ramps define several passageways for unimpeded ascent of numerous relatively small third flows of tobacco particles directly against the convex underside of a partition which is located in the duct between the two conveyors. The partition breaks up each third flow into two equal partial flows and causes each partial flow to rise toward a different foraminous conveyor.
