  • Patent number: 6287507
Abstract: The method serves for tempering preforms made of a thermoplastic material. The preforms are provided for blow deformation into containers. The preform is provided with a temperature profile along the periphery. The temperature profile is produced in that striplike regions extending in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the preform are heated differentially. Stepwise tempering is carried out for successively timed thermal conditioning of various regions of the preform.

  • Patent number: 6168749
Abstract: The process serves the purpose of producing containers. A heated pre-form made of a thermoplastic material is stretched and inflated with the aid of a gas under pressure for purposes of molding the container. The inflating process is divided into a preliminary blowing period with a gas under a lower level of pressure and into a subsequent primary blowing period with a gas under a higher pressure level. The ratio of the container diameter to the inner diameter is selected to be greater than 4.0. The pre-form has a median wall thickness of greater than 3 millimeters and at least at the beginning of the preliminary blowing phase is provided with a material temperature greater than 70 degrees Celsius. The pre-form at least at the beginning of the preliminary blowing phase in the area to be oriented is provided in the area of its upper surface with a temperature which is at a maximum equal to a medium temperature of the inner surface of the pre-form in the area to be oriented.

  • Patent number: 5648026
Abstract: The procedure serves the purpose of molding a container from a thermoplastic material. After a temperature treatment a moldable object is fed to a blow station, which has a blow mold that is provided for the purpose of contouring the container. The temperature-treated moldable object is inserted into the blow mold. By feeding in high-pressure blow air, the moldable object is expanded. In addition at least one other pneumatic working step with low-pressure air is carried out, with this air being taken from a low-pressure air supply. The low-pressure air supply has a smaller pressure level than the high-pressure blow-air supply. After the moldable object has been expanded, high-pressure blow air streaming out of the molded container held in the blow mold is fed to the low-pressure air supply during a transition phase. In the region of the low-pressure air supply a pressure monitoring is carried out for the purpose of defining a maximum low-air pressure to be provided.

  • Patent number: 5312572
Abstract: A preform of a thermoplastic material, especially a material which is orientable during blow forming, has an opening region, a closed bottom as well as walls connecting the bottom with the opening region. In the region of at least a part of the surface demarcating the preform a texturing enlarging the surface is provided, which has a low profile depth relative to the wall thickness of the preform. A process for heating a preform of a thermoplastic material is also disclosed which includes texturing a portion of the surface of the preform to enlarge the surface area thereof whereby the time required to heat the preform to a desired temperature suitable for blow molding is reduced. The preform is also rotated as it is moved past a heating device and the heating device is controlled such that the heating device combination with the texturing provides a desired temperature profile rendering the preform suitable for blow molding.

  • Patent number: 5234637
Abstract: A method and apparatus for thermically processing a material, such as a plastic material made of PET, in contact with a very thin heating layer that is provided on a body, such as a blow-mold. The intensity of current supplied to the heating layer is controlled as a function of the medium temperature in the heating layer to allow the heating layer to very rapidly heat up the plastic material contacting the heating layer. After switching off the heating current the plastic material is rapidly cooled down to the temperature of the body carrying the heating layer. This process may be applied to the heat setting process of blow-molded hollow articles made of PET.

  • Patent number: 4943229
Abstract: The invention relates to a control means for actuating the valves for supplying pressurized blowing fluid and working fluid to the blow mold stations of the blow wheel of a blow mold machine. The blow wheel comprises a center-free wheel ring of which the outer periphery is rotatably supported on a base. Facing the inner periphery of the wheel ring there is a stationary rail on which carriages are adjustably mounted. The carriages accommodate cams for actuating the plungers of the valves mounted on the wheel ring through a yoke which provides a self-holding action. Thus, adjusting of proper valve operation is facilitated while the operation of the blow molding machine is continued.

  • Patent number: 4943228
Abstract: The blowing wheel and preferably the heating wheel as well as a large blow molding machine are rotatably supported in a centerfree peripheral bearing means. The heating and blow wheels are constructed as wheel rings to provide a profile free of distortion, wobbling motions or, respectively, peripheral vertical deviations of the wheels are thus prevented and the delivery of parisons of thermoplastic material for processing on the wheels takes place with high accuracy.

  • Patent number: 4847032
Abstract: A process for producing hollow bodies from oriented thermoplastic material wherein a cylindrical portion of a heated hollow preform which has a bottom thereon is subjected to stretching at a starting temperature which is below the vitreous transition temperature of the thermoplastic material, with the wall thickness of the preform being reduced in the stretching operation. Prior to the stretching operation the preform is heated in the portion in which the stretching effect begins, to a temperature higher than in the portion adjoining same. Stretching is preferably effected along the axis of the preform at different rates such that in the portion of the preform at which stretching begins, stretching is effected at a lower rate than in the portion adjoining same in the stretching direction.

  • Patent number: 4828783
Abstract: In the production of hollow bodies from oriented thermoplastic material, a cylindrical portion of a heated hollow preform is stretched, with a simultaneous reduction in the wall thickness thereof, at a starting temperature below the vitreous transition temperature of the material. A mandrel is positioned in the preform to support it during stretching, the outside diameter of the mandrel corresponding to the inside diameter of the preform. Directly before the mandrel is inserted into the preform the preform is subjected to re-alignment to adapt at least the cross-sectional shape of the mouth opening of the preform to the cross-section of the mandrel. The re-aligning operation is effected by inserting the preform into a sleeve adjoining a drawing ring for carrying out the stretching operation.

  • Patent number: 4590028
Abstract: A method is disclosed for making a three layered parison for blow molding a biaxially oriented hollow article of thermoplastic material. One end portion of an extruded tubular body is heated to welding temperature and closed to a bottom by a forming step. The central layer of the multilayered body is removed from part of the end portion before the forming step takes place to insure that the central barrier layer of the body allows for an intimate welding together of the inner and outer layer. A similar operation is used in making the finish portion of a container at the opposite end of the tubular body.

  • Patent number: 4579519
Abstract: The mold halves of a blow mold device are mounted on a pair of arms encircling the mold halves in a semicircular arc which arms are latched together by latching means which are located at the parting line of the mold halves at both sides thereof. Due to this structure, merely the portion of the arms extending between said latching means is subjected to bending forces by the blowing pressure. For swinging the arms and actuating the latching means a common slide is provided in parallel relationship to the longitudinal axis of the blow mold, which slide includes a number of control cams which are engaged by cam followers cooperating with said arms and said latching means. The invention provides a compact and light-weight construction allowing to actuate a smaller mass in shorter time, thus increasing the production capacity of the blow mold device.
