  • Patent number: 5824121
Abstract: A gasification reactor has a mixing tube above it in a common pressure vessel and the mixing tube is provided with a gas cooling heat exchanger. A driving gas feeder draws a portion of the mixture of quenching gas and raw gas from the mixing tube, passes it through the gas cooling heat exchanger and feeds it as a quenching gas to the raw gas at the inlet side of the mixing tube. At least one further heat exchanger in the same pressure vessel or in another pressure vessel, receives the mixture of raw and quenching gas beyond the mixing tube.

  • Patent number: 5767332
Abstract: In the production of aromatic hydrocarbon from coking crude by-product benzene after a vaporization stage in which the crude benzene is evaporated to leave a residue, the crude benzene is subjected to pressure refining in the presence of hydrogen. The residue is distilled to form high and low boiling fractions and at least the gas pressure and temperature of the distillation stage is controlled so that the sump product apart from styrene is substantially free from aromatic hydrocarbons with less than 9 carbon atoms. The rate of withdrawal of the vaporization residue from the vaporizing column is controlled, depending upon the concentration of polymer formers in the crude benzene to be in the range of 6 to 40% of the rate of feed of the coking by-product benzene to the vaporizing column.

  • Patent number: 5723026
Abstract: The production of high purity benzene and high purity toluene is obtained by utilizing the initial gas separating column for the treatment of the aromatic containing starting material as a separating column for separating a benzene rich from a toluene rich component. The benzene rich component is subject directly to distillation while the toluene is subject to predistillation to separate high boiling components and only then to extractive distillation is distilled to separate the high purity benzene from the high purity toluene.

  • Patent number: 5672326
Abstract: Ammonia and 5 to 40 volume percent hydrogen sulfide containing vapors which arise in the vaporization of process water from hydrogenation or a crude oil fraction or in gas treatment in a coking plant, can be subjected in a cracking catalyst reactor to breakdown of the ammonia to nitrogen and hydrogen. The resulting process gas is cooled to 250.degree. to 350.degree. C. and is fed to a hydrogenation reactor where any sulfur is hydrogenated to the hydrogen sulfide. The process gas can then be subjected to further treatment without the danger of sulfur blockage of the process lines. For example, the hydrogen sulfide can be removed by a selective absorption process.

  • Patent number: 5658434
Abstract: A coke-oven door assembly has a rigid door, a mounting block adjacent the door, a door-plug backing plate fixed to the mounting block, and a membrane having a center portion between the backing and mounting blocks and a periphery juxtaposed with a coke-oven door jamb. A blade-type seal is carried on the periphery and engageable with the door jamb and spring units on the door press the seal against the door jamb. A plurality of bolts threaded into the mounting block extend generally perpendicularly outward from the membrane and are each formed with an abutment shoulder directed outward away from the membrane. A plurality of sleeves threaded into the door slidably receive the bolts and are each formed with an abutment shoulder directed inward toward and engageable with the respective bolt abutment so that the mounting block can move perpendicular to the membrane relative to the door with separation of each bolt abutment from the respective sleeve abutment.

  • Patent number: 5607594
Abstract: In the process for purifying an aqueous MDEA-solution the formate content of the MDEA-solution circulated in a main stream between the absorber and desorber of a hydrogen sulfide wash unit for gas produced by gasification of a carbonaceous material, e.g. coal, is measured. A partial stream of MDEA-solution is withdrawn from the main stream, passed over an ion exchange medium which removes some formate present to form a partially purified partial stream and subsequently the purified partial stream is returned to the main stream. The amount of the withdrawal from the main stream is controlled so that the formate content of the main stream is maintained between 10 and 30 g/l. Only from 0.5 to 0.08% by volume need be withdrawn from the main stream to form the partial stream. The ion exchange medium can be regenerated with a hydroxide-containing solution, which is subsequently fed to an ammonia separator column of a hydrogen sulfide wash apparatus.
