Patent number: 6363984Abstract: A tire tread having design cycles or pitches in which the circumferential lengths of repeated pitches are randomly modulated in certain selected sequences to reduce the amount of noise generated by the tire tread when the tire rolls on a road surface. The pitch sequences include three different circumferential pitch lengths including a group having a largest number of medium length (M) pitches, a smallest number of shortest length pitches (S) and a medium number of longest length (L) pitches. In one embodiment, the ratio of the three different pitches are 0.8 for the smallest length pitch (S), 1 for the medium length pitch (M) and 1.2 for the longest length pitch (L). 100 pitch sequences are proposed with the sequence L M S M S L M L M L M L M L M M L M L M L M L M L M being the preferred sequence which provides the most noise reduction. Ninety nine other pitches are also within a range to provide an acceptable level of noise reduction in a tire tread.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 1999Date of Patent: April 2, 2002Assignee: Kumho & Co, INCInventor: Christopher D Morgan

Patent number: 5980668Abstract: A vehicle tire having a rotation time wear indicator associated with the tire tread which visually shows when the tire tread has worn to various levels at which levels the tire should be rotated to a different wheel position on a vehicle. The wear indicator is a plurality of pattern parts such as holes, raised portions in tread grooves or other distinctive patterns in the tread which are positioned at various radial levels of the tread with the different levels being spaced apart at different locations around the circumference of the tread. When the tread wear reaches various levels relative to the levels of the pattern parts, so that any particular pattern part is no longer visible, then it is time to rotate the tire to another wheel position.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 1996Date of Patent: November 9, 1999Assignee: Kumho & Co, IncInventor: Mark D Slingluff

Patent number: 5616194Abstract: A pneumatic radial tire provides enhanced noise reduction and water releasing ability during driving by repetitious process of trapping air into the circumferential groove, formed on the tread as the air therein gets compressed and expanded before it gets released. The pneumatic tire includes a rib-lug tread pattern formed by circumferential grooves and several axial grooves at a slant angle relative to the circumferential grooves.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 1994Date of Patent: April 1, 1997Assignee: Kumho & Co., Inc.Inventors: Nack-Hyun Lim, Young-Cheol Kim, Bong-Wha Kim

Patent number: 5544889Abstract: A golf ball is disclosed with dimples uniformly distributed over its surface so that eight identical spherical triangles do not intersect any of the dimples. The surface of the golf ball is divided into 4 identical equilateral spherical triangles which are so oriented as to have the equator of the ball form a shared leg of two of the triangles and to bisect the remaining two triangles. The surface of the ball is further divided by constructing a second equator or great circle which is perpendicular to the first equator and bisects the two triangles not already bisected. The pole of the golf ball lies neither at the center nor at the intersection of the apices of any of the constraining figures.Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 1995Date of Patent: August 13, 1996Assignee: Kumho & Co., Inc.Inventor: Jae-Chang Moon

Patent number: 5506683Abstract: This invention comprises a sensor (40) having a slit-ray generator (41) and a camera (42), a calibration block (100) for calibrating 3-dimensional coordinate values, a computer (10) for processing 2-dimensional coordinate values of the calibration block (100) and the object (90) to obtain data of 3-dimensional space coordinate and output it to CRT (60), a robot hand (10) for moving the sensor (40) on multiple axes. Therefore, this invention can measure the section profile shape of a tire, etc. accurately and quickly.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1991Date of Patent: April 9, 1996Assignee: Kumho & Co., Inc.Inventors: Yoon-Mo Yang, Jae-Moon Jeong, Seon-Il Kim, Ki-Jeon Kim

Patent number: 5468328Abstract: A shoulder bladder used to make green tires has an inflatable portion including an inner-rubber member encased in body-ply and cover-rubber layers. Steel cords fixedly mounted relative to and projecting away from the cover-rubber layer have a first edge close to a lower corner of the uninflated bladder and approximately aligned with aligned ends of the cover-rubber and body ply layers. A cord-rubber composition extends (a) from and is adhered to a bottom portion of the cover-rubber layer, (b) around and adhered to the steel cords, (c) around two aligned corners on lower and upper surfaces of the bladder, and (d) along a top surface of the cover-rubber layer. The cord-rubber composition is adhered to the cover-rubber layer where the cord-rubber composition extends from the steel cord to the top surface of the cover-rubber layer.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1994Date of Patent: November 21, 1995Assignee: Kumho & Co., Inc.Inventors: Chun-Sik Kim, Young-Rok Yoon, Seong-keun Kim

Patent number: 5332226Abstract: A golf ball has a spherical body having a mold parting line at the equator thereof by which the body is divided into a top half sphere and a bottom half sphere of equal dimensions, the molded partition line having no dimples thereon; an axis passing through the center of the plane which is defined by the mold parting line, the axis defining two poles at the intersection thereof with each of the half spheres, and being perpendicular to the plane; a first set of four identical spherical regular triangles and six identical spherical right triangles distributed over the surface of the top half-sphere, and serving as a constraining pattern for dimple distribution; a second set of four identical spherical regular triangles and six identical spherical right triangles distributed over the surface of the bottom half sphere and serving as a constraining pattern for dimple distribution, said second set of spherical triangles being a mirror image of the first set of spherical triangles but rotated by 60 degrees centeringType: GrantFiled: December 14, 1992Date of Patent: July 26, 1994Assignee: Kumho & Co, Inc.Inventor: Chun-Sik Kim

Patent number: 5298216Abstract: A method for molding a tire tread element by injecting a rubber mixture through injection holes of an injection mold formed by moving two cooperating mold elements toward a cylindrical drum disposed therebetween. The mold elements sealingly match to an outer surface of the inflatable drum to define a mold cavity of a cross-section and length selected to form a tread element of precisely defined shape and size. A breaker layer may be integrated with an injected rubber mixture and the tread element may be made to be completely circular or linear with matchingly formed end surfaces enabling secure adherence thereat.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 1992Date of Patent: March 29, 1994Assignee: Kumho & Co., Inc.Inventors: Chun-Sik Kim, Jong-Dae Han, Gyoeng-Su Kim
